POPSPresidential First Dogs The last dog is of course, little Barney. I personally liked the First Cat Socks best, but I'm a cat person. I wonder what the new First Dog will be named? "Bark Obama", I heard. .:) Harry S. Truman & Feller The 33rd President once famously said, "You want a friend in Washington? Get a dog." Evidently he didn't care much for friends, as he regifted a cocker spaniel, given to him as an unsolicited Christmas present in 1947, to the White House physician. Dog lovers around the country assailed the President for surrendering Feller, who came to be known as The Unwanted Dog.

POPSHere Kitty Kitty. . . . .Tasty Kittens Annual Festival Fury over cat eating festival . . . . . . .They believe that eating cat burgers – and fried cat legs and tails – can cure bronchial disease. It is also believed that feline meat serves as an aphrodisiac. The cats are bred especially for this festival – which takes place at the end of September on the Day of Santa Ifigenia. But it has generated fury among animal rights groups.

POPSNew Bedford Firefighter Saves Cat: Performs"Mouth To Mouth Resuscitation" The MSPCA kicked off a fund-raiser last week in Springfield to buy oxygen masks for cats and dogs for each of the city's 18 fire engines. Performing CPR on a cat or a dog requires training. In many ways, it is the opposite of what rescuers do for humans, which typically involves pinching the nose closed and covering the person's mouth with one's own lips to create a seal. With dogs or cats, a rescuer holds the animal's mouth shut and puts their mouth around the snout. http://www.southcoasttoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080910/NEWS/809100334

POPSDid you know cats can run obstacle courses? I just discovered that there is a cat show this weekend near my home, and that it will feature an obstacle course (described as a series of "agility trials"). This might be worth seeing. It's hard to picture.

POPSStrange Laws In Phoenix, Arizona, you can't walk through a hotel lobby with spurs on. In California, a law created in 1925 makes it illegal to wiggle while dancing. In Utah, daylight must be visible between dancing couples. In Michigan, it is against the law for a lady to lift her skirt more than 6 inches while walking through a mud puddle. In North Carolina, it is against the law for a rabbit to race down the street. In Georgia, it's against the law to spread a false rumor. In West Virginia, one can't cook sauerkraut or cabbage due to the odors and the offence is subject to imprisonment. In Missouri, a man must have a permit to shave. The law states that more than 3000 sheep cannot be herded down Hollywood Blvd. at any one time. In Texas, it is still a "hanging offense" to steal cattle. In Virginia, the Code of 1930 has a statute which prohibits corrupt practices or bribery by any person other than political candidates.

POPSCat Behavior Tips Training a cat isn't as difficult as most people think. It comes down to a basic understanding of cat instincts and how a cat thinks. Knowing that and mix in some patience and you may be surprised at the outcome.

POPSCats happy to share if they're top dog It's the dog's fault according to the researcher. The example at the bottom of the clip, is used as an analogy. And they've never seen a jealous cat? One problem is that the dog starts copying the cat. When very often in 'cat free' homes, the dog will copy (for better or worse) the owner.

POPSStrange friends ... why not? I love the unexpected joy of finding a friend. Someone you didn't expect to hit it off with but then love their sense of humor or appreciate their passion for what they do. Really, we shouldn't put any boundaries on our friendships. The world is full of women to befriend, learn from, grow with, laugh with and love being their friend. This little clip made me think of strange and great friendships. If you have an 'odd' or unusual friendship, send in your story for the Girlfriendology contest. And be open to new friendships. Like in this clip, you never know who will come to your aid when you need someone. Enjoy!

POPSCool Ideas for Hot Dogs I've seen so many stupid animal owners, but it's never too late to get some "know-how". At this time of year, the warmth is often animals worst enemy. Take care of your dog, cat or whatever you have decided to give love and shelter. Don't be one of the bad statistic.

POPSThe Difference In Dogs And Cats Excerpts From Their Diaries Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. The audacity! I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released --and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded! The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. The captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe.......for now. :D

POPSSF Weekly: A Time to Kill The SF SPCA is moving away from their previous, well-respected no-kill policy, and is accelerating euthanasia of possibly-adoptable pets in order to save money. Every one of my cats has been a shelter rescue. Every cat or dog I have in the future will be a shelter rescue. This story makes me heartsick.

POPSSUBSTANTIATED TRUE FACTS Breast cancer patients are significantly more likely to have a pet dog instead of a cat. 80% of all breast cancer patients have had "extensive contact" with dogs before their diagnosis. Researchers speculate that dogs (and possibly other pets) harbor viruses that can raise the risk of contracting cancer. - San Diego Union, 11/20/07
