POPSPresidential First Dogs The last dog is of course, little Barney. I personally liked the First Cat Socks best, but I'm a cat person. I wonder what the new First Dog will be named? "Bark Obama", I heard. .:) Harry S. Truman & Feller The 33rd President once famously said, "You want a friend in Washington? Get a dog." Evidently he didn't care much for friends, as he regifted a cocker spaniel, given to him as an unsolicited Christmas present in 1947, to the White House physician. Dog lovers around the country assailed the President for surrendering Feller, who came to be known as The Unwanted Dog.

POPSDog removed from Beijing menus during Olympics Looks like Dog lovers will have to go to other provinces for a few months. Guangdong and Hunan will have many delectable doggie dishes to be enjoyed along with cat, snake, and even bat. A popular dish in Guangzhou was called "Tiger Fights Dragon", a soup with wild cat and snake. A restaurant on People's Middle Road called Zhao Lu, specializes in rat dishes. Bon apertit!

POPSKill the cat that kills the bird? Interesting article about the conflict between cat lovers and bird watchers. There is good evidence that America's large population of feral cats has decimate bird populations, including endangered species. Bird watchers advocate culling feral cats, which cat lovers do not want to do. The story focuses on Jim Stevenson, who was tried for shooting and killing a feral cat in defense of some piping plovers, an endangered species.

POPSHappy Birthday Aisha! Cat lovers will understand this clip. I know, I know, I'm such a sappy cat Mum, but my sweet little cat Aisha is three years old today. She's a cat, I found in a rubbish bin in Greece when she was just a tiny kitten and we never thought she'd make it. She was SO sick (poisoned) but she pulled through and today she's three already!! Kids grow up so fast. Happy Birthday, little girl!. :)

POPSClintons Dumped Socks! This says a lot about one's character IMO, or lack thereof. Where I come from, pets are family . Pets are *people*. You do not abandon them. They are not "things" you just toss away on a whim. Pets are "adoptions, not aquisitions." Watch out Hillary, there are lots of voting animal lovers out there. Wouldn't it be a thrill, if a cat got to influence who became president... or not? Yay, go Socks!! . "No pet left behind" Hillary!!

POPSFeral Cat population vs. City Hall These beautiful cats are facing a threat from the Gulf Breeze City Council. They live around the Gulf Breeze end of the Pensacola Bay Bridge in Northwest Florida. When the council announced that the cats would be trapped and destroyed, a few wonderful people arranged a charity fund to have the cats fixed and have their health checked. They have, so far, managed to rescue and place in adopted homes over twenty of the cats. There are still over twenty needing homes. The city council agreed to extend the deadline for these cats to August 1, 2007 when a crowd of caring cat lovers overflowed the meeting room at City Hall to show their support for the cats. The effort to save these cats can still use help from other caring cat lovers. More information is available at the website www.waysidecats.com.

POPSCalif. Bill would require neutering of pets I had to think long & hard on this one. it would eliminate puppy mills. it would give shelter pets a better shot at adoption. I have seen many people breed a cat or dog so their kids can "see birth" -- then the offspring are abandoned. So I guess I would support this action for now.

POPSWhimpering puppy's ears were sliced off Yesterday, a Calgary man who scalded his cat so badly it had to be destroyed was sentenced to three months in jail. The judge also banned Duston Wicker from owning an animal for two years. And in another case of animal abuse, a Didsbury, Alta., teenager was sentenced to three months house arrest and two years probation last week after he ran over a Lab-border collie by accident, then beat it, dragged it and left the dog to die. The incident provoked outrage among animal lovers. Personally, I think an attack against an animal should be treated the same as an attack against a person.

POPSFrankenfoods: The Unnaturalizing of our Food Supply Time for me to move on a bit. I have said all I want to say about gun control for a while. In this post I turn to an even more frightening example of the greed of the global capitalists, the engineering of the food supply. Genetic engineering and the food additive industries are currently nearly free to do as they wish with and to the food supply. The FDA has been traditionally slow to respond to problems in the food supply and tends to be overwhelmed in the exercise of their regulatory and inspection functions, mainly because the agency is underfunded and cannot adequately staff to fulfill its Congressional mandates. There are significant unknown dangers in both producing and eating genetically engineered foods. For example see Genetically Engineered Foods by Ronnie Cummins, Ben Lillston and Frances Moore Lappe who discuss the business of genetic engineering. I
