Earth would be heading to a freeze without CO2 emissions
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  11-16-2008
The chill would induce a long, stable period of glaciation in the mid-latitudes, smothering Europe, Asia and North America to about 45-50 degrees latitude with a thick sheet of ice. However, there is now so much CO2 in the air, as a result of fossil-fuel burning and deforestation, that this adds a heat-trapping greenhouse effect that will offset the cooling impacts of orbital shift, said Crowley. "Even the level that we have there now is more than sufficient to reach that critical state seen in the model," he said. "If we cut back some, that would probably still be enough." In September, a scientific research consortium called the Global Carbon Project (GCP) said that atmospheric concentrations of CO2 reached 383 parts per million (ppm) in 2007, or 37 percent above pre-industrial levels. Present concentrations are "the highest during the last 650,000 years and probably during the last 20 million years," the report said.

Finally, it has occurred to someone that some behavioral problems in children could be due to lack of discipline. Now, add to that the excessive use of caffeine and sugar, as well as immersion in TV and video games, and we may have a clue as to what really causes hyperactivity.

Liberals clinically mad

by dl211  11-13-2008
"The roots of liberalism – and its associated madness – can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind," he says. "When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious."

Dept. of Defense Releases new War Strategy Manual

Anyway, I learned today that more than 250,000 people have downloaded the manual in three weeks. Those are New York Times bestselling numbers. And it says something about how much people are looking at this manual. Some authors toil for years for such numbers. So the military is considering publishing the manual and selling it in bookstores, just as it did for 3-0. If you want to check it out, See above link and scroll down to last sentence.

Barney Frank: A Democrat's Irresponsible And Impossible Plan
merrie
by merrie  11-11-2008    1
~ ~ ~ ~to cut the defense budget by 25 percent~ ~ ~ ~ Research and Development (R&D); and Operations & Maintenance (O&M). MILPERS includes all funds used to pay the troops, provide subsistence for their dependents, their pensions and retirement pay, and their medical expenses (housing is paid out of a separate but relatively small account). Procurement is money spent to buy equipment--everything from rifles to aircraft carriers, including money spent to upgrade existing weapon systems. R&D is money spent to develop the next generation of weapon systems, to ensure that the U.S. maintains a technological edge over our adversaries. Finally, O&M is the money used for training, to buy fuel and food and other consumables, to fix broken equipment, and to sustain forces in the field.

Hope for Change?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-10-2008
Bush may speak of al Qaeda, perhaps of "Islamofascism," and others he'll accuse of brutality, while contrasting their ideology with a vision he claims to have of peace, liberty, prosperity. But the U.S. government differs not from those extremist groups who use violence to further their causes, for ours is a government which also uses unjustified violence or the intimidating threat thereof to advance its own agenda. The US... has become like the rogue states it takes pride in condemning. Our military is not used to defend our freedom any longer, it is used to enforce an evil interventionist foreign policy. I do believe this empire will eventually end. The choice is between ending it voluntarily by choosing peace and bringing our troops home from all over the world, or its demise out of necessity from economic and human suffering in America. To save lives, rather than a "liberation" of Iraq, the world needs liberation from American imperialism.

Gene Therapy Might Cure AIDS
Mohir
by Mohir  11-8-2008    1
While cautioning that the Berlin case could be a fluke, David Baltimore, who won a Nobel prize for his research on tumor viruses, deemed it "a very good sign" and a virtual "proof of principle" for gene-therapy approaches. Dr. Baltimore and his colleague, University of California at Los Angeles researcher Irvin Chen, have developed a gene therapy strategy against HIV that works in a similar way to the Berlin case. Drs. Baltimore and Chen have formed a private company to develop the therapy.

One Test to Rule Them All?
Rebecca Ruiz

The Wall Street Journal has an interesting report about a new test that can look for a dozen viruses, including the common cold. It's innovative, but expensive at $300 to $400 a pop and takes several hours to process. Would that matter to you if it meant you could get a definitive diagnosis?

Artist as Public Servant
wildcat
by wildcat  11-7-2008    2
A successful artwork is one that somehow causes that audience to experience a shift in perception. With this understanding, I was able to modify my orientation from that of an artist creating objects for consumption to that of an artist working as a public servant to create experiences that change people’s ideas of what it means to be a community. agree?/disagree?
