POPSDunkin Donuts Goes Completely Insane There are certain times in history that make us look back and wonder, "how is it possible that civilized people behaved in such craven and irrational ways?" The Salem Witch trials, for instance. The present moment will likely be looked back on as another such time. Case in point: Dunkin Donuts just pulled an ad in which TV cook Rachael Ray wore a scarf that somewhat resembled a traditional Palestinian head dress -- because imbalanced bloggers accused the company of promoting terrorism. I'll skip speculating on the sheer pandering nuttiness of Dunkin's decision, to point out merely what a dumb business decision this was. It's a global company. There are 1.3 billion Muslims out there. The math is simple.

POPSAlec & baby brother Steve have differing views on samd-sex marriage Normally, celebrity opinions don't register with me. But in this case I find it interesting that two close brothers could be at such political odds. Alec, totally favours same-sex marriage while Steve quotes the bible. Oh well, at least the fundies can't talk about the incredible lack of morality in Hollywood. All they have to do is look towards little Stevie Baldwin.

POPSMedia manipulation or what? I am not so concerned with the fact that the Clinton's engage in this sort of thing as I am that they were successfully able to bury the story. This says more about the media, and their lack of recognition of whom they serve, than it does about the Clintons.

POPSMika Brzezinski refuses to read about Paris Finally, some one in the news industry has stood up and said something about the stupidity of American news. Paris Hilton in jail, Lindsay Lohan back in rehab, Britney Spears drunk again, none of that is news and shouldn't be covered by any one. Everybody needs to release that all this Paris stuff was faked and she is happier than ever because she was front page news for a while. Please stop covering her and maybe, just maybe, she'll go away!

POPSMagical Thinking or Positive Thinking?
Another reason why I don't care who endorses a product (or idea). Just because millions of Americans have fallen for one idea or another and because some big name celebrity is on the bandwagon, does NOT mean it's a good idea (even if you would otherwise support the celebrity aka "are a big fan"). (Likewise, just because you hate an organization or a certain celebrity does not mean that their ideas don't have merit.) The key to life (YMMV): THINK FOR YOUR DAMN SELF! Believers and non-believers alike were given a brain by their creator and according to most religions were also given FREE WILL. This apparently was not for nothing. Just like women were given breasts for feeding, all humans were given brains for thinking. $HIT HAPPENS! It's the thinking human being who knows how to dig out of the $hit and find a pony (yeah, even if it's crippled...it's better than letting someone else do the digging for you and thus taking all the credit)! There is NO SECRET! Just live!

POPSThe Trash Princess: Why Americans Love to Hate Paris Hilton An ambitious look into the unstoppable American celebrity phenomenon that is Paris Hilton and her permeation into world culture. Why do we love to hate her and just how representative of American culture and ideals is she anyway? Questions for our times.... The only thing complicating this picture of dissipation is that Paris Hilton isn’t quite the airhead she plays on TV. She created her persona of Paris the Heiress with an instinct for America’s suspicion of the idle rich. Confession of an Heiress: A Tongue-in-Chic Peek Behind the Pose is the title of her best-selling book. It’s the title of a woman who is in on the joke. (Via kottke.org.)
