GRAVE IN FAMILY CEMETARY FOR MURDERED WRITER
SwansheadChronicler
by SwansheadChronicler  9-21-2011
The recent gruesome lynch-slaying of Gothic Mystery novelist Violette Harker (in real life Prudence Meriweather) has Eastern North Carolinians talking about the real life author and her eccentric points of view. Something that never ceases to amuse folks around Swanshead was her strange form of progressivism which she zealously practiced and relentlessly advocated. A committed Libertarian, the deceased 63 year old Ms. Meriweather liked to say, ‘You can’t trust Democrats- as they’ll tax you off your land, and as you’re being evicted they’ll tell you that you shouldn’t smoke, drink, or eat fried foods... while the Republicans will tell you they’re small government- as they break the treasury and send our children to their deaths in unnecessary foreign wars. Many did not believe that her vision of a modern North Carolina as a 19th century style of government minus slavery and Jim Crow could work nowadays. CEMETARY MURDER HORROR BAFFLES POLICE!
MartinChuzzlewit41
by MartinChuzzlewit41  9-16-2011
It should be mentioned that few folks ever go to the glorious garden sanctuary behind the St. Timothy’s in the day. No, other than mourners attending daytime funerals, the minister, the gardener, & the monthly exterminator spraying for ants, Pentacostalists, spiders, Mormons, snakes, and Jehovah’s Witnesses – Miss Virginia was the only one to ever cross the devilishly drab slate stone entryway. And absolutely nobody other than her would dare snoop in it during the night – not the undauntable Swindell boys living in the glowing minty-beige Hardee mansion next door . Why? Because the sanctuary stood right next to the spooky backyard of Miss Harriet Heckendorn’s sinister dark brown French 2nd Empire mansion. There in the house her peculiarly demonstrative Papa built, it was said she could be seen summoning evil spirits at night. But, with a scrumptious bare midriff like hers, Virginia feared neither devils nor witchcraft; and thus, she made constant use of this sanctuary.

LOVELY LOCKS IN THE CEMETARY
MartinChuzzlewit41
by MartinChuzzlewit41  9-14-2011
Not alone lurks the legacy of craven acts in the friendly town of Swanshead, North Carolina- but the spectre of a perfidious presence incarnate. At the center of it all is the aggravatingly eccentric and virginal Miss Virginia Chestnutt. (Pictures of her in Chatper 6)Not quite 30 in 1990, Virginia is living at home with her parents in an old Gothic Revival-Italianate mansion on East 2nd St. in Swanshead. Though an avid amateur historian, Virginia was blithely unaware that when she undertook to write a novel based on the history of her hometown, she was unwittingly embarking upon a course that could unravel not just the history of the town- but the present day town, and perhaps herself as well. Something of an unspeakably insidious and nefarious nature seems to have long ago burrowed itself into the marrow of this friendly and once proud Eastern North Carolinian town... but what?
