Getting Poverty Wrong
merrie
by merrie  3-25-2008
While they insist that strengthening labor unions or protecting homeowners from foreclosures will alleviate the hardships of the poor, the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of the Census remind us that the breakdown of the traditional two-parent, married family is a far greater contributor to poverty in America than many of the supposed shortcomings of our economy. It’s hard to imagine that America will make much more headway on reducing persistent poverty until it halts this long-term trend. The Census Bureau’s study on the living arrangements of American children appeared in mid-February. The data show that the number of children now living in two-parent families has dipped just below the 70 percent mark for the first time since the Census began collecting data on family formation nearly 130 years ago. Researchers estimate that the entire rise in poverty in America since the late 1970s can be attributed to the decline of families headed by two married parents.

One in three! America looks more and more like a third world country. Meanwhile billions of dollars are being thrown into stupid, useless wars. What can be said, Mr and Mrs America? Next time you see a homeless person on the street, think about what they would have chosen to spend the money on.

Do You Really Want To Live To Be 100?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  7-18-2007    1
Well? Yes and no. It depends on a lot of things. Will the natural world be totally devastated with only pockets of wildlife left? Will we be fried or flushed by global warming? Will BushCo Jr. be ruling the world? Then no thanks! It's all about the quality of life IMO, not the quantity. .:) His study has produced a long list of characteristics that members of the 100 Club share: good longevity genes, emotional resilience, good coping skills, intellectual activity, a sense of humor and a zest for life. Optimists live longer, he adds. Oh yes, it also helps to be female, 80 percent of centenarians are women. (PS) Be sure to check out page 2 of the article! It has the definitive answer to the meaning of life and OMG it's so true! .;)

US Men earning less than their Dad's did.

"There is clearly some story here that productivity gains are not trickling down to the median family," said John Morton, a co-author of the study and the managing director of economic policy initiatives at the Pew Charitable Trusts. The study's authors, who plan to examine relative mobility, or the ability of Americans to move up or or down in social strata, said their report shows the canonical belief in an American meritocracy may be unraveling. "The expectation that each generation will do better than their parents has become a fundamental part of what we call 'The American Dream,'" said Morton. "But this new analysis suggests this bedrock belief may be shifting under our feet."

jklugman
by jklugman  9-8-2006
Democratic presidents have produced slightly more income growth for poor families than for rich families, resulting in a modest decrease in overall inequality. Republican presidents have produced a great deal more income growth for rich families than for poor families, resulting in a substantial increase in inequality.
