Stump Staple: Bashing Free Trade
Andrew Gillies
by Andrew Gillies  10-30-2008
National Journal's Peter Cohn details just how dirty the words "free trade" have become on the campaign trail. Story notes that in one ad from the Democratic party, Elizabeth Dole, a Republican U.S. senator representing North Carolina, is referred to as "the senator from China."

As Usual, The Truth Remains Unspoken In The Press
merrie
by merrie  10-15-2008
So, why does Pelosi get a complete pass for aligning herself with this Colombian Senator that aids terrorists and is a chief booster of one of our biggest enemies in Central America? What else but that the U.S. media does not discuss this subject much. But, why doesn't the U.S. media want to expose Pelosi's support of a foreign enemy? Perhaps it is for the same reason that the U.S. media doesn't want to talk much about the true nature of the close ties that Barack Obama has to American terrorist William Ayers? To do so would discredit Pelosi and Obama both and that is the last thing the media wants to do. So, the truth remains unspoken in the press.

More Mud Slung At McCain (Ties to Nazi Collaborators)
sahara
by sahara  10-7-2008    3
McCain has said previously he resigned from the council in 1984 and asked in 1986 to have his name removed from the group's letterhead. "I didn't know whether (the group's activity) was legal or illegal, but I didn't think I wanted to be associated with them," McCain said in a newspaper interview in 1986. Singlaub does not recall any McCain resignation in 1984 or May 1986. Nor does Joyce Downey, who oversaw the group's day-to-day activities. "That's a surprise to me," Singlaub said. "This is the first time I've ever heard that. There may have been someone in his office communicating with our office." "I don't ever remember hearing about his resigning, but I really wasn't worried about that part of our activities, a housekeeping thing," said Singlaub. "If he didn't want to be on the board that's OK. It wasn't as if he had been active participant and we were going to miss his help. He had no active interest. He certainly supported us."

"CIA is taking over the churches" ?!
cakebelly
by cakebelly  9-25-2008
Case in point: Daniel Ellsberg. Once a seminary student, then an officer in Vietnam, and finally working for the nation's highest intelligence organization, he was ordered to compile all the records of our war in Vietnam into a readable history. Ellsberg got them published by The New York Times, instead of keeping them secret. Otherwise known as the Pentagon Papers, these records showed how America deceived its own citizens and fostered a war in that far Southeast Asian country, of which we are still feeling the effects today. President Richard Nixon, to try to discredit Daniel Ellsberg, set up the "plumbers" spies who ransacked Ellsberg's psychiatrist office. Tricky Dick then used these same plumbers to tap the Democratic Headquarters in the Watergate office buildings. Other former CIA agents, like Phillip Agee and John Stockwell, told their stories of intrigue and American meddling in the affairs of other countries. All had a religious background and a penchant for telling the

The Bush Crime Family Thrives on.
papananook

Amazingly, Bush Sr. completely insulated himself from any personal consequences regarding Iran-Contra. Like a good mafia don, he had layers and layers of loyal "button men" willing to shut up and take the fall for him. His good friend Bill Clinton, who by many accounts protected the gun export and cocaine importation leg of this trade as it was conducted out of Mena, Arkansas, ran against Bush for president in 1992, won, and promptly discontinued all further investigation into the Iran-Contra affair. If you want to take this a little deeper, the folks who were incinerated at Waco by Clinton and Janet Reno very early in Clinton's presidency, had a thriving business converting semi-automatic rifles to automatic ones. It's never been made clear who the customers for these weapons were, but if you look at a map, Waco, Texas is not that far from Mena, Arkansas. Bill Clinton's representatives in the ATF office in Little Rock started feverishly developing their case against the Wac

Spanish-American War
sahara
by sahara  8-14-2008
The U.S. government was also moved by the heavy losses of American investment in Cuba caused by the guerrilla warfare, an appreciation of the strategic importance of the island to Central America and a projected isthmian canal there, and a growing sense of U.S. power in the affairs of the Western Hemisphere. There was an unspoken threat of intervention. This grew sharper after the insurgents, refusing a Spanish offer of partial autonomy, determined to fight for full freedom. The warfare that commenced was short and very one-sided. Peace was arranged by the Treaty of Paris signed Dec. 10, 1898 (ratified by the U.S. Senate, Feb. 6, 1899). The Spanish Empire was practically dissolved. Cuba was freed, but under U.S. tutelage by terms of the Platt Amendment (see under Platt, Orville), with Spain assuming the Cuban debt. Puerto Rico and Guam were ceded to the United States as indemnity, and the Philippines were surrendered to the United States for a payment of $20 million.

Crystal skulls in British, US Museums Are Fakes
revenantdm
by revenantdm  7-9-2008
Indiana Jones would have probably taken as a fool by these as the British Museum Skull was bought 127 years ago and the Smithsonian was bought in 1960. If some of the best scientists, archaeologists, and anthropologists were fooled by the fakes, could have anyone ever have accidentally discovered the deception with only a cursory look? The Legend of the Crystal Skulls and their curse (or blessing - see story) have circulated for decades... nothing like true modern technology and skepticism to ruin a great myth of the paranormal!

Child Detainees Battle System Alone
sahara
by sahara  7-2-2008    1
Eight immigrant youths suing the Abraxas Hector Garza Treatment Center in San Antonio describe being beaten repeatedly, so severely that several required hospitalization. The abuse continued even after it was reported to their caretakers' supervisors. In Nixon, Texas, ten detained young people filing a Texas Rio Grande Legal Aid lawsuit allege repeated assault and retaliation upon reporting the abuse. Of course, most abused detainees do not have access to pro bono lawyers and cannot hope to sue; much more often than not, their stories go untold. For the most part, however, the facilities' violations are kept from the public eye - and the eye of the federal government doesn't see much of them either, according to a recent OIG report noting that "interviews with Department of Unaccompanied Children's Services central office officials indicate that little oversight of facilities occurs." Federal officials aren't required to meet with children when they visit the facilities.

Europe Defying US on Cuba-LIFTING Of Sanctions

After 44 years of failed American policy in and around Cuba, Central America and so on, finally the day has come! Progress in the endless anti-communist witch-hunt. South Florida Cubans had already the Island divided among only themselves. The Cubans in Cuba would get nothing. Perhaps now the chance will develop, just like East and West Germany. These type of sanctions do not and never have worked. The end of sanctions is near. Bueno!

The Myth of "Underdevelopment"
papananook
by papananook  5-14-2008    4
Yesterday's video "Economic Hitman" showed how the banking system is designed to bankrupt borrower nations. The long term goal is to extract resources as super low prices and to limit progressive poltical ideas. The method is simple: 1. make an impossible-to-pay-back loan; 2. negotiate collateral far in excess of the loan's value; and 3. collect The system works that much better when it's backed up with the capacity for overwhelming violence. Michael Parenti talks about the history and reality of so-called Third World "underdevelopment" and points out that Americans are next on the agenda: http://www.brasschecktv.com/page/318.html - Brasscheck - Brasscheck P.S. City Slickers Turn Tropical Entrepreneurs: An Eco-Adventure
urbanlife
by urbanlife  5-6-2008    5
Imagine going after your dream business…on a tropical island. What does it really take to build an island resort? In 2002, four city slickers set out to build their dream business in the Panamanian rainforest: called Tranquilo Bay. All of the buildings at Tranquilo Bay—are constructed from steel, virtually unheard of in that corner of Panama: but they wanted to protect against termites, sea air, and earthquake damage. Jim Kimball and Jay Viola knew nothing about construction before beginning work on the buildings. They learned everything they needed from the Internet during Sunday visits to the mainland. “We built Tranquilo Bay inside the rainforest overlooking the Caribbean Sea and the beautiful Panamanian Jungle. Our central location within the archipelago of Bocas del Toro permits us to explore some of the most biologically diverse areas of Panama and Central America: an archipelago of some 68 tropical islands” http://www.tranquilobay.com/home.htm

The widespread U.S. military presence in Latin America
papananook
by papananook  3-7-2008    5
The premise of the policy, that revving up the Colombian military to fight the guerrillas who protect coca plantations will affect the street price of cocaine, has been thoroughly discredited. So we might ask: Who, besides the corrupt Colombian military, has benefited from the $5.5 billion appropriated for Plan Colombia since 2000? The No. 1 beneficiaries in dollars are the U.S. companies that produce Blackhawk gunships and run the program of chemical warfare in Colombia’s coca fields. These include the companies providing the U.S. government with “services” to aid the Drug War.
