Attack on Iran Might Not Work So Well
cptenaud
by cptenaud  8-9-2008    15
Let me break this down: Essentially, an attack on Iran like this would be nothing more than a glorified raid. At the same time, Iran, sandwiched between hostile forces to the east and west, would likely fight for its life. And the U.S. has no forces available to initiate a ground invasion (or even a response, really). The people pushing for military action against Iran are crazy.

Making a Comeback: Male Belly Dancers in Egypt
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  1-5-2008    2
More: Mesbaah is shimmying in a society that has long struggled with ever-changing limits of social tolerance. A carved relief at a pharaonic-era tomb near Cairo shows today's dance prohibitions were yesterday's norm. It depicts a chorus line of men at a religious festival; each wears a sash knotted on his left hip, a fashion for dancing men and women that lingers today. Male performers were once considered more reputable than females. In his book "The Manners and Customs of the Modern Egyptians," Edward William Lane, an Englishman who lived in 19th-century Cairo, observed that male dancers were preferred by Cairenes who thought women "ought not to expose themselves." From 1834 to 1849, women dancers, known as ghawazee, were banned from the city. Rakia Hassan, 62, a retired dancer, recalls that in her childhood, males peddled their skills along with women on Muhammed Ali Street, then a one-stop shop for belly dancer hires. Me: Never even knew males use to belly dance.

Bush is Planning Nuclear Strikes Against Iran's Secret Sites
Amergin
by Amergin  8-23-2007    8
Hersh claims that one of the plans, presented to the White House by the Pentagon, entails the use of a bunker-buster tactical nuclear weapon, such as the B61-11, against underground nuclear sites. One alleged target is Iran's main centrifuge plant, at Natanz, 200 miles south of Teheran. This newspaper disclosed recently that senior Pentagon strategists are updating plans to strike Iran's nuclear sites with long-distance B2 bombers and submarine-launched missiles. And last week, the Sunday Telegraph reported a secret meeting at the Ministry of Defence where military chiefs and officials from Downing Street and the Foreign Office discussed the consequences of an American-led attack on Iran, and Britain's role in any such action. The military option is opposed by London and other European capitals.
