POPS1.7 million displaced return to southern Sudan based on interviews with 875,000 internally displaced people during their return journey, 75 per cent used buses or trucks to get home, 17 per cent walked, five per cent travelled by boat and three per cent travelled by plane. Detailed information about those seeking to re-establish themselves in the region should help aid workers and government authorities plan assistance programmes, covering food, shelter, health care and other vital needs, according to the IOM. “Tracking spontaneous returns, particularly at the village level, provides important information on the reintegration needs of vulnerable individuals and families,” its Sudan mission chief, Mario Tavolaj, said in a statement. “It also represents an important tool for planning medium to long-term recovery in southern Sudan.”

POPSHunger in India India is long overdue for a revolution: Cubans may be poor - mainly due to the decades old embargo by the US - but their children do not starve to death.

POPSUnited Nations Reform: Fact or Fiction? The United Nations promised international cooperation on eliminating the major threats to peace and security and the most serious impediments to the protection of human rights and human dignity. Sixty years after the UN officially came into existence, 24 October 1945, the trail is one of broken promises. While important successes have marked some of its paths, the international machine has been hijacked and manipulated to subvert the very causes it was intended to promote. A number of factors have forced UN reform to move much higher up on the global agenda than ever before: the exposure of the billion-dollar UN-run Oil-for-food scam, peacekeeper-rapists, and paralysis in the face of genocide in Sudan. However, in an environment where there is little, if any, consensus on the most critical issues of our time, the real game is one of finger-pointing. Undoubtedly, the "blame America first" will continue. http://www.eyeontheun.org/un-reform.asp

POPSThe Sky, From Above Viewing these photos at the website is recommended. The Space Shuttle Discovery successfully launched last week, becoming the 154th manned US space mission. It flew to the International Space Station, delivering (among other things) a Japanese module called Kibo, repair parts for a broken toilet, a Buzz Lightyear action figure, one of Lance Armstrong's yellow jerseys, and 18 sesame seed bagels - the first bagels ever to reach Earth orbit. Completion of this mission will leave only eight flights remaining in the Space Shuttle program until its end in 2010. One of the best features of the space program has always been astronaut photography, and I will take this opportunity to share some of the best photographs of Earth's skies, taken from above - way above (over 200 miles to be more exact).
