POPSSteele Running for RNC Chairman, Gingrich "Ideas Guy" Gingrich and Steele are working together to create a new strategy for the direction of the GOP I like the direction this is heading, if correct. Michael Steele is an eminently likable guy who can communicate conservative values and ideas with competence and charm, and has always inspired the base. He comes without the significant political baggage of a Newt chairmanship, but will undoubtedly be bolstered by Newt's ideas, as Gingrich has signaled that he wants to be very involved in the remaking of a party that could use some new ideas. As for the somewhat fallacious face-off David Brooks drew between traditionalists and reformists, a Steele and Newt alliance could offer both a fresh face and fresh ideas without succumbing to the temptation to fight Democrats by becoming second-rate, imitation liberals. Both are "Hayesian reformitionalists" (see the above link) in their public pronouncements.

POPSNewt Gingrich Offers To Chair RNC
Gingrich has operated best as a philosopher for the conservative movement, someone who can both capture the essence of conservatism and put it into action. Gingrich has the skill to communicate to a national audience and an emeritus status that will have people paying attention when he speaks. As RNC chair, his political baggage becomes irrelevant, allowing him to focus on party- and agenda-building instead of running for office. Most importantly, Gingrich understands the technological tools that escaped the GOP in 2008. American Solutions has established a very impressive grassroots structure for policy, which could easily be adopted and adapted to the RNC. As Patrick Ruffini has been arguing at Rebuild the Party, the RNC needs to close the technology gap with the DNC in a hurry. Gingrich could get the GOP to a terrific start in doing just that. Please let this happen. If so, we will be repopulating Congress with boatloads of true conservatives by 2010.

POPSLieberman's hubris It's really laughable that Lieberman is dictating to the Senate Majority Leader. Sure he's been in office quite a while. But he has withdrawn himself from the party. In my experience you argue as hard as you like within the party for the candidate of your choice; but once the party decides, you either work for that candidate, or -- if you really can't stomach them -- you sit on your hands during the campaign. If you are so principled as to oppose the candidate of your party, you would be principled enough to depart.

POPSDean to Step Down as DNC Chair The piece goes on: "My sense is that the Obama folks are pretty insular and don't want somebody else building the party and haven't even decided what building the party means for them," explained one aide. "I bet they go with a split chair again ... McCaskill at Chair, and somebody like Steve Hildebrand at Operational Chair." Whatever happens, Dean should always be remembered as the guy who brought the 50-state strategy. Granted, it was exactly the perfect time for it, but a party that doesn't act like a national party will never be one.

POPSPriest and Nuns in brawl continues: He was taken to hospital with injuries to his neck and bruising to his abdomen. A lawyer for the clergy disputed his version of events, noting that the nuns had "a combined age of 160". "This establishment was being occupied illegally," said lawyer Gaetano Di Vietri. "As to the alleged aggression, I would only say that the two nuns have a combined age of about 160. For the rest, it will be up to the magistrate to clear up, but the clergy members deny the allegations." The priest and nuns belong to a religious order, the Disciples of Santa Teresa and the Baby Jesus, which owns the lease on the premises and reportedly wants the property back.
