POPSDIY soap – cleaning up your act Half way recipes (in which you take a pure form of soap and spruce it up) can be easy to do at home. You can use Castille soap to make several varieties of body wash. Here is one recipe: Vanilla Almond Soap 1/3 cup whole almonds 1 4-ounce bar Castille soap 1/4 cup distilled water 1 tablespoon almond oil 1/8 teaspoon vanilla essential oil Grind the almonds in a food processor or coffee grinder. Using a cheese grater or a knife, shred the bar of Castille soap. Boil the water and add the shredded soap, stirring until you get a nice gooey texture. Reduce to a simmer and then add in the almond grinds, oil and vanilla. You can spoon the soap into molds (ice cubes can make little gift soaps) and let it sit for around five hours until it hardens.

POPSHiking Into History: England’s Ancient Ridgeway Trail More: The full 87 miles of the official Ridgeway National Trail can easily be divided into shorter segments, depending on time available. It can be cut more or less in half, by deciding to walk only the older, original western section, which passes all the great prehistoric sites. Day hikes, and half-days centered on the Uffington White Horse, or Wayland’s Smithy, or the Avebury Stone Circles, can easily be devised by studying the map. The trail’s excellent Web site (www.nationaltrail.co.uk/ridgeway) is full of advice, and possibilities for accommodations and meals.

POPSK.S. Perino Pencil Roll K.S. Perino is one of the participants in the CPP, so I peruse her blog periodically to check out her prompt responses. As I was doing that this morning, I saw hat she had made a pencil roll. I have seen the pattern for pencil rolls on the Pink Chalk Studio website and Julie over at High Fiber Content even made me one for my birthday last year. I really like the pencil rolls and have been contemplating expanding the pattern a little to accomodate knitting needles. This pencil roll is one of the best that I have seen. First, it is gorgeous. Next it is even more useful because of the little zippered pouch that the artist added (note to self: learn to put in zippers!). Finally, the little details such as the fabulous machine quilting and the little charms on the ends of the ties really make the piece. I am thinking that one of these would be great to replace the ziploc bag in which I carry my PITT pens around.

POPSThe Bizarre Saga of the Arctic Sea, Not Another Climate Post One is tempted to chalk this ex post facto claim that the ship had not been lost to Russian ego, which over the years has moved Moscow to claim that intelligence and competence were behind no end of stupid and incompetent things. But then why this?: The saga also took a bizarre new twist when the ministry disclosed that the ship’s captain had tried to pass off the Arctic Sea as a North Korean vessel when it was intercepted by the Russian Navy. This is the first time that investigators have implicated the crew in the mystery. FP Passport's Joshua Keating asks the right question: "Who gets caught and then claims to be from North Korea???"

Recently at a townhall, when a woman asked whether she would have been able to get a pacemaker for her 99 y/o mother, Obama responded by saying her mother could have just taken painkillers (re: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-dQfb8WQvo ). This illustrates what a lot of people have started to realize about Obama: He’s a moron. That’s why his health care plans are not winning popular support; from his handling of the economy people know he’s a moron and they know health care will only be made worse. They worry if they let Obama loose in a hospital, he’ll eat all the lollipops, chew on the wiring, and get a bio-hazard bucket stuck on his head. And if Obama chases a ball into traffic, a spare moron, Biden, is waiting. Govt. is full of morons who couldn’t make in the private sector just waiting to get their stupid on everything. You don’t want your life in their hands. What Republicans need to do is just keep Obama away from important things so he doesn’t hurt himself and others.

Everyone I know who can actually afford it (only those lucky enough to be full time employed at the right place) get regular check-ups, rush to emergency for things most of us without insurance would not, and still complain about the high cost. Insurance companies are all set up to make money off of your fears, not to pay out when you need it. Corporate lawyers, well-written contracts, and fear are insurance companies best friends. This study was conducted one year before the current financial situation, which means the numbers are likely worse. Frankly, I have no faith that health care reform is going to change anything for the better.
