Remember Salem?
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  Today 12:24 PM
From the article: The religious leaders offer help to the families whose children are named as witches, but at a price. The churches run exorcism, or "deliverance", evenings where the pastors attempt to drive out the evil spirits. Only they have the power to cleanse the child of evil spirits, they say. The exorcism costs the families up to a year's income.

Hunger on The Increase in the USA
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  Today 9:02 AM
One of the biggest myths about the USA is that it's a land of plenty enjoyed by all. But last year 36 million Americans went hungry without access to food. Many of them were children. Yet during the last 7 years the wealthiest among us knew enormous economic growth. Those who thought that the Lord of the manor was disposed to throw the remains of the meal to the serfs were kidding themselves. When possible they will consume every last morsel. Trickle down economics is a mere talking point when in fact the spigot is mostly turned off.

Orwell's Children
willhelm
by willhelm  11-16-2008    1
Too many of us... have become just like the denizens of Jonestown: Orwell's children -- enraged into constant militancy against eternal enemies, oblivious to the notion of a Blessed Creator, melded into the consciousness of the party hive, divorced from history, hypnotized by images, inoculated against reason, stripped of family, and existing only to serve the cause. There were specific elements necessary for nations with a heritage of freedom to slide intoabject slavery..... What are the characteristics of the Orwellian state? 1. Start with God. He must go. 2. Truth must go too. 3. Language must be brought to heel. Marxism foisted upon us words like "capitalism," which means nothing at all but which has so infected our minds that we reflexively use this silly nonsense word instead of freedom. Politically correct language is rampant. Image and symbols replace words.

Finally, it has occurred to someone that some behavioral problems in children could be due to lack of discipline. Now, add to that the excessive use of caffeine and sugar, as well as immersion in TV and video games, and we may have a clue as to what really causes hyperactivity.

It Depends
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  11-13-2008
I'm all for protecting children from pedophiles. Though it must be remembered that "the church" doesn't have a very good record on this account. And what about the 18 year old who has consensual sex with his 16 year old girlfriend and is then arrested and branded a sex offender? I'll admit that I've not read the law the clip refers to but it appears on the surface to be ill thought out and lacking in many respects. At most, it's a piecemeal stab to address a complicated issue.

Liberals clinically mad
dl211
by dl211  11-13-2008
"The roots of liberalism – and its associated madness – can be clearly identified by understanding how children develop from infancy to adulthood and how distorted development produces the irrational beliefs of the liberal mind," he says. "When the modern liberal mind whines about imaginary victims, rages against imaginary villains and seeks above all else to run the lives of persons competent to run their own lives, the neurosis of the liberal mind becomes painfully obvious."

Standing out: alternative literacy ideas; teacher engages children through method from FreedomWriter
thekay
by thekay  11-12-2008
also from article: Freedom Writers started in September at Van Bokkelen, where the majority of students who attend the school qualify for the federal free and reduced-cost meals program. Teachers there selected fifth-grade girls from the Ladies Club, a group of about two dozen third-, fourth- and fifth-graders who receive lessons in etiquette, good behavior and setting goals. The girls, some of whom said they don't like school, said they look forward to Freedom Writers. The girls go through different exercises in class before two or three girls volunteer to read from their journals. Usually they learn new vocabulary. They all agree not to judge each other and to show empathy. They also agree not to share anyone's secrets. Once the girls "feel good about writing," she will work more on the mechanics of syntax, Gibson said. That way, the girls will learn to hone their skills. "They're going to be more articulate," she said. "They're going to be writing all the time."

Anti-Gay, Anti-Family
dulios
by dulios  11-12-2008    1
Even before the law passed, the state estimated that it had only about a quarter of the foster parents it needed. Beginning on Jan. 1, a grandmother in Arkansas cohabitating with her opposite-sex partner because marrying might reduce their pension benefits is barred from taking in her own grandchild; a gay man living with his male partner cannot adopt his deceased sister’s children. Social conservatives are threatening to roll out Arkansas-style adoption bans in other states. And the timing couldn’t be worse: in tough economic times, the numbers of abused and neglected children in need of foster care rises. But good times or bad, no movement that would turn away qualified parents and condemn children to a broken foster care system should be considered “pro-family.”

Can a 13-year-old refuse treatment?
balthazarus
by balthazarus  11-12-2008    2
"How old is old enough to decide whether to live or die? Priscilla Alderson, professor of childhood studies at the Institute of Education, says her research had found that even very young children could give or withhold informed consent to medical treatment. Decisions about treatment, or even about whether to live or die, cannot be based on age, she argues. "Our research has found that age isn't a helpful criterion - but experience is," she says. She has found that even at four years old, a child who has diabetes can understand the principle of insulin treatment - and it is vital they do understand or they risk interpreting the pain they as some kind of parental punishment."
