Chimps are related to Humans
brightlight4
by brightlight4  10-17-2008    1
It seems that genetically Chimpanzees are very closely related to human beings and are to be classified as "homo" in the future. I hope they don't make the same mistakes as humans as they evolve!!

Crows make monkeys out of chimps in mental test
Mohir
by Mohir  9-19-2008    4
To investigate further, the team presented the crows with a wooden table, divided into two compartments. A treat was at the end of each compartment, but in one, it was positioned behind a rectangular trap hole. To get the snack, the crow had to consistently choose to retrieve food from the compartment without the hole. A recent study of great apes found they could not transfer success at the trap-tube to success at the trap-table. The three crows could, however.

Crows smarter than Chimpanzees

Not-so great apes To investigate further, the team presented the crows with a wooden table, divided into two compartments. "They seem to have some kind of concept of a hole that isn't tied to purely visual features, and they can use this concept to figure out the novel problem," Taylor says. "This is the most conclusive evidence to date for causal reasoning in an animal." Three of the crows did fail at both tasks, however. The team plans further work to investigate why. Laughter May Outlive Humans—and Even Numbers
wildcat
by wildcat  6-27-2008    1
The insight that old things tend to last and new things tend to disappear flows from the Copernican principle. This principle says, in essence, “You’re not special.” Before Copernicus, we imagined that we occupied a very special place at the center of the universe. Now we know better: We are on an average planet in an average galaxy in an average cluster. But the Copernican principle applies to time as well as to space. If there is nothing special about our perspective, we are unlikely to be observing any given thing at the very beginning or the very end of its existence. And that rather obvious point can lead to some interesting predictions.

Chimps Agree: A Bird in Hand Is Worth Two in the Bush
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  6-18-2008
This tendency held true for both groups, despite different rearing histories, suggesting that their disinclination to barter is innate, says Sarah Brosnan of Georgia State University, the lead researcher in this study. The chimps’ risk-averse behavior, Brosnan speculates, is attributable to a lack of language skills. “If one chimp could say to another, ‘OK, you crack nuts while I hunt meat, and then we’ll trade,’ they’d be able to specialize and have a developed economy,” Brosnan says.

Chimps console each other to reduce stress after fights
iskandar
by iskandar  6-17-2008
"When Fraser looked at who was consoling whom, he found that acts of consolation were more likely to happen between individuals with valuable relationships. Chimps tended to comfort peers who groomed them frequently, shared food with them or gave them a hand in their own conflicts. Other factors like how closely related they were had no such effects. "
