Fed Covers Up Financial Crisis
merrie
by merrie  11-15-2008    2
the current tax, spend and bailout policies. His basic message is that the U.S. is broke and that the situation will get worse under an Obama Administration because of its commitment to more federal interference and involvement in the economy. Schiff, who blows the whistle on these schemes, is not very popular in the media, which have been telling us consistently that things would get better after Wall Street was bailed out. Nevertheless, during this discussion, a week before the election, Schiff predicted an Obama victory because “nobody is going to vote for four more years of this” and voters “are going to grasp at straws and vote for anybody who promises change.” But the change is phony, he warned. Obama “will put several nails in the coffin,” he said. “We’re going to get more of the same, only worse.” Fox News Host Jaime Colby asked, “Where are the criminal prosecutions because I think their pictures should be hanging up in the post office?”

China announces huge stimulus package
egoldstein
by egoldstein  11-9-2008    3
Will be very interesting to see over the short term if all the stimulus being thrown into the economy by leading nations (in the form of money and lower interest rates) can help sustain the economy. Will also be very interesting to see if the long term result of all this stimulus is hyper inflation.

On Proposition 8: Something to consider
zizzy
by zizzy  11-8-2008    1
For years, the California Christian right apparatus, long hampered by their nativism and racism, had been unable to make inroads into the state's brown, yellow and black population - a demographic goldmine in a state that is more than 50 percent minority and growing. Prop 8 may prove their goldrush. From the very beginning they bought up ad space in Chinese, black, Spanish, and Korean media; they hosted massive rallies for ethnic Christians. The Sunday before election day, I went to Los Angeles City Hall for the most celebratory, most diverse rally I have ever attended; it was organized by Yes on 8 Chinese advocates. See Alternet article: Why the Prop 8 Gay Marriage Ban Won http://www.alternet.org/rights/106178/why_the_prop_8_gay_marriage_ban_won/

If this were true I would say our gov't is full of more Fracking idiots then I originally thought. I would not put past any think tank though - hell Cheney's old company made a shit load by doing that in 2001. Hopefully the next administration is more focused on world peace and diplomacy rather than blowing things up.

Presidential Shackles
Maureen Farrell
by Maureen Farrell  9-19-2008
Good, if depressing assessment, of the next President's options. Over the next two months, it will be important for the media and the public to remember the handcuffs that this economic crisis and the ensuing bailouts have placed on the US government and judge the Presidential proposals accordingly.

Three Senators Opened The Door For Iraq Oil Contracts For Red China
merrie

but the resulting media hooraw in Iraq led to the cancellation of the contracts, and helps to explain why Iraq is doing oil deals instead with China. Senators Schumer, McCaskill, and Kerry claimed: “It is our fear that this action by the Iraqi government could further deepen political tensions in Iraq and put our service members in even great danger.” For that reason, presumably, Schumer went so far as to ask the senior vice president of Exxon “if his company would agree to wait until the GOI produced a fair, equitable, and transparent hydrocarbon revenue sharing law before it signed any long-term agreement with the GOI.” Exxon naturally refused, but Schumer managed to get the deal killed anyway.

FDA: Melamine Found In Baby Formula In China
merrie
by merrie  9-12-2008
Reports in the Chinese news media say that as many as 60 babies have been admitted to hospitals with kidney stones and that the illnesses have been linked to powdered formula. In March 2007, the discovery that pet food was causing kidney disease and death in dogs and cats across North America led to the largest pet food recall in U.S. history. Melamine and a related chemical, cyanuric acid, had been added to grain products in China to fraudulently increase their apparent protein content, making them appear to be gluten. The products were sold as gluten to U.S. and Canadian pet food manufacturers.

Obama's Top 10 Flip Flops
merrie
by merrie  9-8-2008    1
Also everyone should know that Jerry Yang, the Yahoo! Inc Co-Founder, is a big Democrat supporter who himself has been guilty of helping the Chinese government imprison people. Obama's Gun Flip Flops Obama's Oil Spill - Obama says he doesn't take money from oil companies. We say that's a little too slick. Obama's Lame Claim About McCain's Money - Obama says McCain is "fueled" by money from lobbyists and PACs, but those sources account for less than 1.7 percent of McCain's money. Obama's Real Record: Public Housing -Obama rich friends hurts communities proof that Obama's Hope and Change rhetoric is all symbolism and no substance? Look no farther than this devastating Boston Globe investigation: http://thedailyvoice.com/voice/2008/07/obamas-favorite-flip-flops-000825.php original link http://hiphoprepublican.com/2008/06/obamas-favorite-flip-flops.html

China Goes Out With a Bang.......
merrie
by merrie  8-26-2008
........ and The Whimper of the Oppressed is Barely Heard........ I wonder, though, if anyone oohing and aahing over the fireworks in Beijing gave thought to the thousands of Chinese peasants who will die because their government took their water away so it could produce the fake beauty of the Olympic compound. Maybe we’ll see that story show up in an NBC news report, do you think? I’m sure the network will get right on that as soon as it gets up off its knees and straightens up its clothing.

China Using Olympics As ‘Pretext’ For Crackdown: Amnesty
papananook
by papananook  7-30-2008
“Authorities have used the Olympic Games as a pretext to continue and in some respects, intensify existing policies and practices that have led to serious and widespread violations of human rights,” the report added. It listed a series of recommendations urging China to: * release all prisoners of conscience; * stop police arbitrarily detaining activists and dissenters; * impose a moratorium on the death penalty; * allow complete media freedom; and * account for those killed or detained in Tibet. “It is very disturbing that Chinese authorities have indulged in such a big crackdown on the activists,” Mark Allison, China researcher for Amnesty, told AFP. “These are people who represent many many more people in China.” Officials were also extending the use of punitive administrative detention, notably of activists and petitioners as well as beggars and peddlers, Amnesty said. In January, Beijing police launched a campaign against “illegal activ

Falun Gong Targeted Ahead Of Beijing Olympics
merrie
by merrie  7-22-2008    1
authorities have instead been using the Olympics as a pretext to escalate persecutions of religious and political dissidents. Chinese authorities fear that Falun Gong, along with Tibetans, Uighurs, and other dissidents, may use the international media presence during the games to draw attention to their causes. "It is now imperative that the international community leverage real pressure and stop these deplorable actions, lest the legacy of the 2008 Olympics be hundreds of Beijing residents languishing in labor camps," Zhang said. The apparent animosity towards Falun Gong on the part of the Beijing Olympics organizer is hardly new. In 2004, the head of the Beijing Olympics Organizing Committee, Liu Qi, was found liable in a U.S. federal court for his role in the torture of Falun Gong practitioners while he was serving as mayor of Beijing.
