Burma's Junta Counts Its Fake Votes, Millions In Peril
merrie
by merrie  5-12-2008    1
GRAPHIC PHOTO A US diplomat based in Rangoon claims the figure may be as high as 100,000 dead. The junta trumpeted what it claimed was a "massive turnout" in its constitutional referendum on Saturday, as thousands of tonnes of food, medical supplies and emergency relief specialists waited on tarmacs around the world for permission to enter the country. "Diarrhoea rates are very high in many of the affected townships; for children under five, diarrhoea is a disaster, adding, malaria and dengue were endemic to this region. United Nations agencies are concerned that there are hundreds of thousands of traumatised, injured people and that if they do not get medical treatment, they will die. Doctors in one hospital were treating up to 5000 outpatients a day, said Unicef's health chief in Rangoon. "They are exhausted. They are working long hours and they really need support. "They are full of patients and they cannot be treated properly due to a lack of human resources and drugs."

Mary Seacole: Black British Heroine
mickfinn
by mickfinn  2-13-2008    11
Mary Jane Grant was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1805. Her father was a Scottish soldier, and her mother a Jamaican. Mary learned her nursing skills from her mother, who kept a boarding house for invalid soldiers. Although technically 'free', being of mixed race, Mary and her family had few civil rights - they could not vote, hold public office or enter the professions. In 1836, Mary married Edwin Seacole but the marriage was short-lived as he died in 1844.

Cocaine Vaccine
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  1-4-2008
"It's a very clever idea," says David Eagleman, a Baylor neuroscientist. "Scientists have spent the last few decades figuring out reward pathways in the brain and how drugs like cocaine hijack the system. It turns out those pathways are difficult to rewire once they've seen the drug. But the vaccine just circumvents all that."

I'm dying to know what people think about this. For the seriously addicted I find this to be a promising option in the battle over addiction, but I fear the "Big Brother" dimension where they may try to force these vaccines on young children in an advancement of The Drug War. Thoughts?

Addiction Vaccines: Just Say No
Lancebowski

Obviously, this won't be limited to cocaine, and soon, options to vaccinate at birth or early childhood will be offered to "concerned" parents. This is a very bad road to travel.

Researchers Developing Cocaine Vaccine
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  1-2-2008
More: "It's a very clever idea," says David Eagleman, a Baylor neuroscientist. "Scientists have spent the last few decades figuring out reward pathways in the brain and how drugs like cocaine hijack the system. It turns out those pathways are difficult to rewire once they've seen the drug. But the vaccine just circumvents all that." Kosten asked the Food and Drug Administration in December to green-light a multi-institutional trial to begin in the spring and is awaiting a response. Approval would mark a breakthrough in the treatment of cocaine addiction, which now mostly involves psychiatric counseling and 12-step programs. It presumably would be the final clinical hurdle before the vaccine -- more than a decade in the making -- might be approved for treatment.

Iraq Sees Catastrophic Rise In Cholera
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-23-2007
"We have a catastrophe in Baghdad," she said. Hmm... she for got the word; another . In its most severe forms, cholera is one of the most rapidly fatal illnesses known—a healthy person may become hypotensive within an hour of the onset of symptoms and may die within 2-3 hours if no treatment is provided. More commonly, the disease progresses from the first liquid stool to shock in 4-12 hours, with death following in 18 hours to several days without rehydration treatment. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cholera
