POPSChurch of the Holy Sepulchre Endangered by Battling Factions &Time Ah, Christian brotherhood and love at it's very best. "Rival denominations often battle for access or space and the congregation at the annual Easter service sometimes resembles the terraces of a boisterous football match. The keys to the main entrance of the church have been held by a Muslim family since the 12th century because the Christians do not trust one another."

POPSCategory 4 Financial Storm From JP Morgan's congressional testimony a few years after a major bank panic in 1907. An exchange between Morgan and his inquisitor for the government, attorney Samuel Untermyer. Untermyer: "Is not commercial credit based primarily upon money or property?" Morgan: "No sir. The first thing is character." Untermyer: "Before money or property?" Morgan: "Before money or property or anything else. Money cannot buy it...because a man I do not trust could not get money from me on all the bonds in Christendom."

POPSOn Mark Lilla's "The Stillborn God: Religion, Politics and the Modern West" Continuation: "We must remind ourselves," he writes, "that we are living in an experiment, that we are the exceptions. We have little reason to expect other civilizations to follow our unusual path, which was opened up by a unique theological-political crisis within Christendom." In short, Lilla believes that we> have gotten one thing utterly wrong: We are not us. We are them. We are not the rule; we are the exception. The rule for Lilla is a blurring of the political and theological that has defined most societies from time immemorial and Western society for most of recorded history until only recently. Since the dawn of Christianity, there has been a deep confusion in Western society about what constitutes a good society, and Lilla astutely highlights what he sees as the limitations of the New Testament in not "articulating a clear, coherent picture of the good Christian political order."

POPSPope correcting Jesus I don't care what the pope says, I much prefer Jesus Christ's definition of a church, which I included in my cartoon today, says Bob Englehart, who created this cartoon, in his blog .

POPSIs the Gay Marriage b/w GOP and Evangelicals Over? Maybe. At the very least, some evangelicals think there are issues a lot more pressing than same-sex marriage, and some of them support equality rights and protections for same-sex couples even if they're opposed to calling it marriage. But the bottom line is that they'd just rather not talk about it at all. Considering what evangelicals usually have to say about gays and lesbians, that's a kind of progress, I guess.
