POPSPitcairn's wedding experience HISTORIC SPOT Pitcairn is not exactly noted for its own history of marital harmony. In 2004, six men were convicted of a string of sex attacks in the isolated Pacific territory that is home to descendants of the 18th-century Bounty mutineers. The trials exposed a culture of sex abuse in the tiny community dating back almost half a century. The men were tried for 55 sex attacks on women and girls on the island, which today has a permanent population of 51. The mutiny to which the islanders owe their existence occurred on the British Royal Navy ship HMS Bounty on April 28, 1789. It was led by Fletcher Christian against the commanding officer, William Bligh. The mutineers set Captain Bligh and other members loyal to him adrift in a small boat and burned the Bounty. Bligh and his crew survived a 50-day voyage to West Timor by catching fish and drinking rainwater.
