POPSChaplains Serve Soldiers Given that attitude they feel attacked by “the devil” when prayer and Bible readings are outlawed in public schools, when active proselytizing is stopped at the Air Force Academy and now when prayers are requested to be removed from mandatory meals at the Naval Academy. Each of these initiatives is, however, not only correct, but each brings practice into conformity with the Constitution. I rejoice in this decision.

POPSThe Golden Rule and the Separation of Church and State by Rev. Michael Helms, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Moultrie, Georgia. In Franklin County, Idaho, the Mormon population is 91.5 percent. In Utah County, Utah, it is 88.1 percent. If your job transferred you to one of these counties and you sent your child to a public school, would you object if the teacher began class by reading from the Book of Mormon each day? Well, obviously not if you are Mormon. If you are of any other religion or none at all, chances are good you would object.

POPSCalls for Boycott of San Diego Hotelier It seems to me that Manchester's allowing his "Catholic faith" to turn him into a bad businessman. After all, more marriages = more honeymoons = more money spent at hotels. Besides, his Catholic faith requires a Catholic wedding -- does this mean he'd spend money to outlaw any wedding that wasn't Catholic? In the end, it's just spin to excuse his bigotry.

POPSA Bad Law The recurrence of offense by rapists and pedophiles is well documented. But what about the multitude of teens that are branded with the scarlet letter of sex offender? The present laws make no distinction between a rapist and an adolescent experimenting with sex. Yet the consequences are the same regardless of the "crime". This is foolhardy and a tremendous waste of taxpayer money to say nothing of the devastating consequences of teens being caught with their pants down. What began as a law to protect children has turned children into lifelong pariahs and that is not right.

POPSPro-Choice Pro-Life The church and the state can only cathechise and legislate. We, the people cannot wait as they debate. But we have the ultimate choice.

POPSNew And Not Improved! New York Times the death penalty and gun control. Mr. Obama endorsed the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn the District of Columbia’s gun-control law. We knew he ascribed to the anti-gun-control groups’ misreading of the Constitution as implying an individual right to bear arms. But it was distressing to see him declare that the court provided a guide to “reasonable regulations enacted by local communities to keep their streets safe.” We were equally distressed by Mr. Obama’s criticism of the Supreme Court’s barring the death penalty for crimes that do not involve murder. Mr. Obama’s shifts are striking because he was the candidate who proposed to change the face of politics. We don’t want any “redefining” on these big questions. This country needs change it can believe in.

POPSThe church was hijacked by Christianist Cultist. My personal orientation in such matters is that the original teacher of what became Christianity would laugh derisively at expressions of Temple worship and personalization that pass for expressions of piety. My evangelical friends who had previously scoffed at my views have now come into congruency with my non-theistic beatitude oriented view.

POPSCheers, President Bush, You Win! And through it all you avoided repercussions. Even losing GOP House and Senate majorities hasn’t slowed you down much. There's so much raw evidence to impeach your ass that it would be as easy as Dick Cheney shooting a lawyer in the face. The rap sheet is a mile long. Yet you remain 100 percent unscathed, threatened by nothing more than a pretzel getting stuck in your craw. That's amazing. My peasant hat is off to you.

POPSMormons Hoping Fear and Prejudice Will Rule the Day As explicitly spelled out in the Mormon letter this is a solely religious viewpoint. So why would they expect others to respect or obey their edicts? If they choose to do so it's their business. Otherwise this is a matter mostly of rights that are being denied to a segment of the population. Bias and prejudice aside, there is no rational reason that gays be denied the rights afforded straight people. Majority rule does not imply correctness. Have we forgotten the manner in which we denied rights to Blacks? Have we forgotten the way we denied rights to Native Americans? The majority was behind these oppressive measures too.

POPSSC: Land of Gawd? Are these folks so brain dead that they just don't get it? Evidently not. They keep trying to inject their own particular superstition into government and they keep failing. Reminds me of the adage of the crazy person persisting in the same activity and expecting differing results.

POPSChurch and State Collide On the Highway "More to the point: If your faith is so strong that it would inspire you to voluntarily stand in line at the DMV — and let’s face it, that’s strong — then why do you need it stamped in cold, hard metal on your vehicle’s ass?"
