POPSReport From a Forgotten War: Second in a Series
Taliban leaders also provided a haven for Usama bin Laden's Al Qaeda to launch the 9/11 attack. In November 2001, when they were deposed by the U.S.-backed Northern Alliance, many of the Taliban fled south to Pakistan and east into Iran. This spring, they came back, intent on overthrowing the democratically elected government of President Hamid Karzi. That's when the Marines of TF 2/7 arrived "in country" to train and mentor Afghan Army and police forces. It's been a challenging assignment for the 1300 Marines, sailors, soldiers and airmen of TF 2/7. The unit's Area of Operations (A/O) is more than 28,000 square kilometers — roughly the size of Vermont. There is only one paved highway. Overland transport to some of the fifteen forward bases and combat outposts where TF 2/7 operates often takes more than 24 hours of continuous day and night movement. Until this week — when four CH-53 transport helos and four Cobra gunships arrived, the task force had to rely on NATO aircraft...

POPS5500-year-old Plaza found in Peru Discovery of Caral (dated to 3000 BCE) was a shock for established archaeology, who rejected the existence of an ancient civilization in south America, prior to 1200 BCE. Now the discovery of Sechin Bajo appears to be a second shock, which pulls the date back to 3500 BCE. These two findings alone, show that Peru hosted an important, unknown civilization, 400 years before the Egyptian kingdom was founded by Menes and at least 250 years before the Sumerians took control of southern Mesopotamia. Amazing discoveries forces historians to reconsider their established "ancient history" cliches.

POPSRepublican's Thompson urges expanded Military One Million Ground Troops, Better Military equipment more funding for Veterans. Great Promises, but do they have the money? Or the people? Private Security can be expensive. Have Politicians ever been taught about Budgets? Well...They're not spending their own money. They get tax breaks! When there is a win they take credit when there is a loss they call it a "win" and blame the enemy for a reason that best suits the social climate. If he becomes commander in chief he should show his faith in the troop and serve in the front line. Of course that would be as insane as believing that a Million member ground force could be raised, when there aren't two nickel's to rub together

POPSImus Return Confirmed - WABC N.Y. Well, Ron Kuby, you weren't a civil rights lawyer there. You were a radio personality. And guess who is better.Sorry. And he didn't take YOUR job. YOUR job is now defunct. Imus does a different job. Now, if Imus will keep the politics, the interviews, a bit of satire, but lose the shock(offensive) style schtick, step up the intelligent part and ease off on the sophomoric part, he'll be able to grow "old" gracefully, and fill a gap in morning radio. Later get a station in D.C. and maybe more markets later, it'll be good.

POPSPrehistoric Greek Water Works Found "The 6-acre site was girdled with a wall of huge stone blocks, built around 1250 B.C. Excavations have also uncovered several buildings - some decorated with painted plaster walls - pottery, a clay figure of a goddess, seal-stones and an amethyst vase shaped like a triton shell. Controlling a strategic road in the northeastern Peloponnese, Midea was first occupied in the later Neolithic period, in the 5th millennium B.C. It flourished during Mycenaean times and was destroyed by earthquake and fire at the end of the 13th century B.C. - after which the site diminished in size and significance. Traces of habitation have also been located from the Archaic (7th and 6th centuries B.C.), Roman and Byzantine periods."

POPSUruk An important early city from the point of view of history of urban form. A good example of river valley settlement perhaps dependent on surplus as an economic base. The importance of the citadel precinct suggest a centralized governance and temple structure point towards use of ritual and institutionalized religious practice to maintain the hegemony of the king

POPSWill You Tube Bring Some Actual Honesty to The Debates? So far these early debates have been pretty tame as far as the kinds of questions that are being asked. The candidates themselves have been primarily making stump speeches and sound bytes, but not explaining their innermost beliefs. I don't know if You Tube will make much of a difference, especially considering the fact that with so many candidates vying for time on microphone, they really cannot say much. Hopefully, as the candidates begin to narrow-down, the questions and answers will become more meaningful.
