POPSProp 8: not a sign of the future, but the "last gasp of a fringe movement" More: On the front page of the New York Times today, reporters Jesse McKinley and Laurie Goodstein assert that the success of anti-gay marriage iniatives in California, Arizona and Florida has “ignited a debate about whether the movement to expand the rights of same-sex couples had hit a cultural brick wall.” That, frankly, is ridiculous. Here's why: … Therefore, this week’s victories for the religious right in California, Arizona and Florida are really the last gasp of a fringe movement trying to forestall the inevitable, rather than proof of a new “cultural brick wall.”

POPSGay couples start marrying in Connecticut The Connecticut Supreme Court ruled 4-3 on Oct. 10 that same-sex couples have the right to wed rather than accept a civil union law designed to give them the same rights as married couples.

POPSArnold and I Agree!!! Climb on the hypocrisy express, fueled by the LDS infusion of millions of dollars. Congratulations, good citizens of California. What rights are you next proposing to strip from your citizenry?

POPSMarriage Actually "In order to determine which level of judicial scrutiny to apply to Connecticut's civil unions law, the justices first had to determine whether gays qualify as a quasi-suspect class. They used four tests to reach their decision. The first three were relatively easy to answer: One, have gays faced a history of discrimination? (Clearly yes.) Two, does sexual orientation affect "a person's ability to participate in or contribute to society"? (Obviously not.) And, three, is sexual orientation an immutable trait? (On this question, the court hedged a bit, declining to say that sexuality is completely fixed. But it did state that, even if people could change their sexuality, it would be a severe injustice for the government to demand that they do so. In other words, on the immutability question, the court basically said: Close enough."

POPSConnecticut Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage This is such great news. Little by little, the U.S. is beginning to catch up with Canada, and other countries who are finally realizing that in a democracy ALL men and women and equal. This should never be subject to social interpretation.

POPSFierce fight over Arizona anti-gay amendment Arizona failed to ban same-sex marriage in 2006, so now they are trying again. The religious right is out full-time trying to rev up the hatred of gays and lesbians in order to make sure we do not acquire the same civil rights every other citizen possesses. There is good reason to believe this vote will fail again, but just for the record, Senator McCain is fully in favour of this ban on gays having equal rights. Any gays out there planning to vote for McCain, puhleeze think again.

POPSHave You Been to Jail for Justice? Was it Cesar Chavez or Rosa Parks that day? Some say Dr. King or Gandhi Set them on their way No matter who your mentors are It’s pretty plain to see That if you’ve been to jail for justice You’re in good company! Have you been to jail for justice? I want to shake your hand ‘Cause sitting in and laying down Are ways to take a stand Have you sung a song for freedom Or marched that picket line? Have you been to jail for justice? Then you’re a friend of mine You law abiding citizens Come listen to this song Laws are made by people And people can be wrong Once unions were against the law But slavery was fine Women were denied the vote While children worked the mine The more you study history The less you can deny it A rotten law stays on the books ‘til folks with guts defy it!

POPSWelcome To The Real World "Government is instituted for the common good; for the protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness of the people; and not for profit, honor, or private interest of any one man, family, or class of men; therefore, the people alone have an incontestable, unalienable, and indefeasible right to institute government; and to reform, alter, or totally change the same, when their protection, safety, prosperity, and happiness require it." -John Adams, Thoughts on Government, 1776

POPSNorway Joins Ranks of the Enlightened: Allows Gay Marriage & Adoption Good for them. I wonder if the USA will join the enlightened in the next decade or two. I think not. Our Puritanism still blights our thinking and conscience. But, then, I didn't think I'd see the day an African American would be the nominee for President of a major political party. But it is happening. Change, as it were, can have its own momentum, sweep us up and deposit us in places we never anticipated.

POPSGun-running Chinese Scow Turned Away China’s decision to turn the ship around was welcomed by the dock workers, trade unionists, religious leaders, Western diplomats and human rights workers who have been campaigning since last week to block delivery of the weapons to Zimbabwe. They had said the weaponry could be used to carry out an even more violent crackdown on Zimbabwe’s political opposition, which is allied with the country’s unionized workers. “This is a great victory for the trade union movement in particular and civil society in general in putting its foot down and saying we will not allow weapons that could be used to kill and maim our fellow workers and Zimbabweans to be transported across South Africa,” said Patrick Craven, spokesman for the Congress of South African Trade Unions, which represents 1.9 million South African workers.

POPSTransgendered Oregon man is pregnant (he says) Thomas Beatie, who has undergone sex-change surgery and is legally male and legally married, has conceived a child via a home insemination from a sperm donor. He plans to carry the child to term. Others, however, are skeptical of his claims.

POPSMaking History: Man Prepares To Give Birth This is completely fascinating to me. Of course, it reminds me of the old Billy Crystal movie, "The Rabbit Test", where Crystal plays a man who becomes pregnant. I haven't seen that movie in years. But, ever since I saw it, I have watched to see if science would ever advance the real idea of men giving birth. Technically, the man in this clip is transgendered, meaning he was born with female reproductive organs, but looks like a man and lives as a male. The discrimination and the bigotry that he has faced through the healthcare system and from his own family is sad and despicable. I will continue to follow this story with some fascination. Mostly because it smacks in the face of everything we have come to know and expect when it comes to the idea of creating a family.

POPSThe City of Baltimore Asks Maryland State Legislators to Permit Same-Sex Marriage Although Maryland and Pennsylvania are neighbours, their politicians seem to have very different views on same-sex marriage and civil-unions. I don't really believe that the folks in Pennsylvania and Maryland are all that different, especially considering the fact that 57% of Pennsylvania Conservatives support civil unions. It just seems that there are still too many Republican/Conservative politicians who have yet to get the message that their mean-spiritedness is no longer appreciated by their constituents.

POPSThe Pennsylvania Senate Judiciary Committee passes an Anti-Gay Amendment Even though 57% of Conservatives in Pennsylvania support civil-unions, the Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee still passed a proposed amendment to the state's Constitution that would ban same-sex marriage or civil-unions. These Republicans cannot even fall back on the argument that they are respecting the wishes of their constituency, since the Conservatives in the state approve of civil-unions. This is just mean-spirited and hateful political posturing.
