thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-12-2008    1
A two-minute movie dedicated to all the soldiers out there, past, present and future. It's not pro- or antiwar, but an insight into what some could possibly be going through during unknown times. The lyrics are written from the perspective of a soldier. Trench - Morgan Clamp

God's honest truth?

The law is being presented in Sweden as if it mostly concerned fundamentalist Christian sects in the backwoods; but the Christian Democratic party, which represents such people if anyone does, is perfectly happy with the new regulation. There is little doubt that combating Islamic fundamentalism is the underlying aim,

Israel's Front-Line Thugs
jklugman
by jklugman  8-8-2008    3
The security forces are, of course, by no means scared to act when it suits them. Palestinian demonstrations are routinely put down with excessive force: rocks flung by pre-teens are countered with rubber bullets, tear gas, and – often – live and indiscriminate fire. But when it comes to clamping down on violence emanating from the settler community, a different set of rules apply, and the authorities' reeking hypocrisy is exposed as endemic to the way in which they view the different strands of Israeli society. Changes Approved Allowing Hundreds of New Domain Names
Marcariel
by Marcariel  6-27-2008
It's about time! They are also looking to clamp down on the "domain tasters" who tie up domain names seeing what the traffic is for certain names, and then they buy the domain and hold out for the highest bidders. This is why a lot of brand names are at strange named domains ... their domain name was already bought by an investor, and they would not pay the price to buy the domain name.

And through it all you avoided repercussions. Even losing GOP House and Senate majorities hasn’t slowed you down much. There's so much raw evidence to impeach your ass that it would be as easy as Dick Cheney shooting a lawyer in the face. The rap sheet is a mile long. Yet you remain 100 percent unscathed, threatened by nothing more than a pretzel getting stuck in your craw. That's amazing. My peasant hat is off to you.

Charging By The Byte To Curb Internet Traffic
merrie
by merrie  6-15-2008
“Based on current trends, total bandwidth in the AT&T network will increase by four times over the next three years,” the company said in a statement. All three companies say that placing caps on broadband use will ensure fair access for all users. Internet metering is a throwback to the days of dial-up service, but at a time when video and interactive games are becoming popular, the experiments could have huge implications for the future of the Web. Even if the caps are far above the average users’ consumption, their mere existence could cause users to reduce their time online. Just ask people who carefully monitor their monthly allotments of cellphone minutes and text messages. “As soon as you put serious uncertainty as to cost on the table, people’s feeling of freedom to predict cost dries up and so does innovation and trying new applications,” Vint Cerf, the chief Internet evangelist for Google who is often called the “father of the Internet.”

Those Noisy Atheists
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  1-4-2008    5
Cultural taboos against religious criticism are deeply ingrained. But are they justified? Apparently they are not. What happens is that generally people take criticism of their religious beliefs personally. It's as though religious beliefs hold some sort of position that is materially different from other beliefs that they hold. Except for the fact that religious beliefs are not reality based they are still simply ideas that a person has come across and decided to adopt.

Murdered Monks Bodies Dumped In Jungle
merrie
by merrie  10-5-2007
About 4,000 monks have been rounded up in the past week as the military government has tried to stamp out pro-democracy protests. The detained monks have been disrobed and shackled, according to sources quoted by BBC Radio's Burmese service. The reports follow claims from a former intelligence officer in Burma's ruling junta that thousands of protesters have been killed and the bodies of hundreds of executed monks have been dumped in the jungle. News of the jailings comes after a former intelligence officer for Burma's ruling junta revealed the true extent of killings to clamp down on protests. The most senior official to defect so far, Hla Win, said: "Many more people have been killed in recent days than you've heard about. The bodies can be counted in several thousand." Mr Win said he fled when he was ordered to take part in a massacre of holy men. His defection will raise a faint hope among tens of thousands of Burmese who have fled to villages along the Thai border.
