Report: McCain suppressed info on POWs left behind
masbury
by masbury  10-23-2008    2
Vast evidence concerning prisoners held in Vietnam and Laos - confirmed under oath by two Secretaries of Defense - has been hidden from the public, largely through the efforts of John McCain, says Pulitzer Prize winner Sydney Schanberg. McCain also acted to remove criminal penalties from laws concerning illegal suppression of evidence about MIAs.

Lawsuit To Ensure Cheney Documents Remain Part Of Historic Record
cptenaud
by cptenaud  9-11-2008
For years, Cheney has resisted revealing any aspect of the inner workings of his office; he has shielded information such as the names of industry executives who advised his energy task force, his travel costs and details, and Secret Service logs of visitors to his office and residence. Since 2003, his office has refused to comply with an executive order requiring entities in the executive branch to file annual reports on their possession of classified data, at one point blocking an inspection by officials from the National Archives.

Missing Launch Devices at Minot AFB
blueridge
by blueridge  8-30-2008
The number of odd circumstances at Minot Air Force Base which was the center of attention after the discovery of mis-shipped nuclear weapons without proper authorization is real interesting. This is about the 5th news report, which follows up on some of the previous oddities. The Air Force also announced Thursday that three ballistic missile crew members from the Minot Air Force Base who fell asleep while holding classified launch code devices have been sanctioned and "decertified from missile operations." Ron Suskind vs. Bush Admin on Iraq-9/11 Fakery
blueridge
by blueridge  8-19-2008    3
Suskind's book has provided documentation of evidence and inside witnesses within the CIA and British Intelligence sources that a fake letter was ordered "from the White House" pretending to be from Saddam's Intelligence Chief to Saddam (whom the U.S. relocated and paid $5 million to) which was laden with lies and a claim of ties between Mohammad Atta (supposed 9/11 ringleader), Al Qaeda, and Iraq--back-dated prior to 9/11--which provided deliberately false claims to connect Iraq to 9/11. The White House has denied (see previous clipmark) but award-winning journalist Suskind summarizes his sources and defends his allegations on Democracy Now (see first podcast "listen" link). The second podcast, Aug. 14, includes House Judiciary Chair John Conyers who has already started an investigation under way which will lead to some kind of action. Conyer's stated the the Senate Intelligence Committee, headed by Jay Rockefeller, has the power to review classified documents to verify this.

Newly Released Federal Documents Reveals Julia Child Among Spies
merrie
by merrie  8-15-2008    1
They studied military plans, created propaganda, infiltrated enemy ranks and stirred resistance among foreign troops. Among the more than 35,000 OSS personnel files are applications, commendations and handwritten notes identifying young recruits who, like Child, Goldberg and Berg, earned greater acclaim in other fields — Arthur Schlesinger Jr., a historian and special assistant to President Kennedy; Sterling Hayden, a film and television actor whose work included a role in "The Godfather"; and Thomas Braden, an author whose "Eight Is Enough" book inspired the 1970s television series. Other notables identified in the files include John Hemingway, son of author Ernest Hemingway; Quentin and Kermit Roosevelt, sons of President Theodore Roosevelt, and Miles Copeland, father of Stewart Copeland, drummer for the band The Police. The release of the OSS personnel files uncloaks one of the last secrets from the short-lived wartime intelligence agency.

Freeeeeedom! of Information (National Security Archive)
sahara
by sahara  8-7-2008    3
So much information, great site! National Security Archive Electronic Briefing Books provide online access to critical declassified records on issues including U.S. national security, foreign policy, diplomatic and military history, intelligence policy, and more. Updated frequently, the Electronic Briefing Books represent just a small sample of the documents in our published and unpublished collections. A tax-exempt public charity, the Archive receives no U.S. government funding; its budget is supported by publication royalties and donations from foundations and individuals. On March 17, 2000, Long Island University named the National Security Archive as winner of a Special George Polk Award for 1999 for "piercing self-serving veils of government secrecy" and "serving as an essential journalistic resource."

Evidence of US Insidscriminate Murder of Civilians During Korean War
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  8-4-2008    1
This can't be true because everything the US does is good by definition. Why, it's tautological: the USA equals good. The US commit war crimes? That can't be because only the enemies of the US commit war crimes because the US says so and as we all know, the US never lies. LOL.

Gitmo Trial Defendants Face Absurd Obstacles
Wisco
by Wisco  7-13-2008
Another problem is that what the defendants tell their lawyers is classified. As a result, they can't even discuss their conversations among themselves. "When we leave the room and we're not with him (Mohammed) any more, we can't turn to each other and say 'What do you think of what he just said?'" said Nevin, who has called the commission process "very, very unfair." "And at the end of this, the government's desire is to execute Mr. Mohammed," said Capt. Prescott Prince, another of Mohammed's legal advisers. "I find that just insane." Calling this "justice" is a joke.

Security Concerns Block China’s 3Com Deal
merrie
by merrie  3-29-2008
The withdrawal of the bid by Dubai Ports World occurred not because the foreign investment committee rejected it but because of a torrent of criticism from Capitol Hill, around the same time that similar criticism of a deal by the Chinese state energy company to buy Unocal also led China to withdraw. Meanwhile, the problems of the 3Com deal are sure to aggravate tensions with China. This month, federal officials charged a Defense Department official with passing classified documents to China. In a separate case, the Justice Department arrested a former Boeing engineer in California on charges of economic espionage for the Chinese. The Treasury Department adamantly opposes extending the curbs on foreign investments into areas that affect economic security as opposed to national security, though it says it will monitor growing foreign investments in whole sectors of the economy, even in the financial sector.

The Race To Pull Out Of Iraq
merrie
by merrie  2-15-2008
Elsewhere, however, it is hard to find many areas where they disagree on their approach to foreign policy or national security issues. The reason could be that their advisers are largely made up of people from Bill Clinton's administration. Hillary's team includes former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former U.N. Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, and former National Security Adviser Samuel Berger, who was caught red-handed, stealing classified Clinton documents from the National Archives. Mr. Obama's advisers include former National Security Adviser Anthony Lake; Susan Rice, an assistant secretary of state in Mr. Clinton's second term; and Jimmy Carter's national security adviser, Zbigniew Brezezinski. "If you add up all of their differences, they both fail on Iraq. They both are advocating a policy that unless significantly modified would lead to a reversal of all our military progress in 2007," Mr. O'Hanlon said.

Cross-Border Chases From Iraq O.K., 2005 U.S. Document Says
merrie
by merrie  2-3-2008    1
Wikileaks, a Web site that encourages posting of leaked materials, says its goal in disclosing secret documents is to reveal "unethical behavior" by governments and corporations. It has previously posted the United States military's manual for operating its prison in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba; a military assessment of a 2004 attack in Falluja; and lists of American military equipment in Iraq. The American military command in Baghdad on Sunday sharply criticized the group's decision to post the document.

9/11 Commission Says CIA Lied and Impeded Investigation
blueridge

Caught in a lie. "Whatever is hidden shall be revealed...". The truth has a way of surfacing. So the CIA it appears is guilty of perjury, yet Bush gave Tenent the American Freedom medal. Of course both Bush and Cheney also testified (but not under oath and not published) before the Commission, but there is no record of that (so no record of lies).

Drug Cartels And Middle-Eastern Terror Connection?
merrie
by merrie  11-26-2007    2
Fort officials changed security measures after sources warned that possibly 60 Afghan and Iraqi terrorists were to be smuggled into the U.S. through underground tunnels with high-powered weapons to attack the Arizona Army base, according to multiple confidential law enforcement documents obtained by The Washington Times. "A portion of the operatives were in the United States, with the remainder not yet in the United States," according to one of the documents, an FBI advisory that was distributed to the Defense Intelligence Agency, the CIA, Customs and Border Protection and the Justice Department, among several other law enforcement agencies throughout the nation. "The Afghanis and Iraqis shaved their beards so as not to appear to be Middle Easterners." According to the FBI advisory, each Middle Easterner paid Mexican drug lords $20,000 "or the equivalent in weapons" for the cartel's assistance in smuggling them and their weapons through tunnels along the border into the U.S.

Fed Judge: Government Lies in Terrorism Cases
blueridge
by blueridge  11-24-2007
Headline should be government perjures itself in terrorism cases, and/or obstructs justice. The government lied in order to get a conviction on Massoui (a U.S. citizen) and had NO evidence except a "confession" (after years of solitary and torture/deprivation). They they LIED that they had no taped interrogations, when in fact they did. In other words the government can say whatever it wants in court to charge someone with terrorism, or torture them until they "confess". THE JUDGE SAYS THE GOV'T CANNOT BE TRUSTED, THE GOV'T IS ON TRIAL BUT THIS WILL GET BURIED.

Death Bait, new bait in Iraq

"In a country that is awash in armaments and magazines and implements of war, if every time somebody picked up something that was potentially useful as a weapon, you might as well ask every Iraqi to walk around with a target on his back," said Eugene Fidell, president of the National Institute of Military Justice. "We don't discuss specific methods targeting enemy combatants," said Paul Boyce, an Army spokesman. "The accused are charged with murder and wrongfully placing weapons on the remains of Iraqi nationals. There are no classified programs that authorize the murder of local nationals and the use of 'drop weapons' to make killings appear legally justified." "It's our job out here to lay people down who are doing bad things," Spec. Joshua L. Michaud testified in Iraq in July, discussing the unit's numerous casualties. "I don't want to call it revenge, but we needed to find a way so that we could get the bad guys the right way and still maintain the right military things to d

by jatfla  10-8-2007    4
Amazing! Though not so surprising. These people have no shame. Any Republican involved in *unusual* sex is tarred & feathered. They are accused of 'phony' slander and denounced on the Senate floor. They have a memory lapse and are convicted of perjury. Yet, Mr. Berger gets a slap on the wrist for stealing classified information and then lying about it. But he only has to bide his time and wait for the Clintons to call and he's back at their political and corrupted money trough. Any American, Rep. or Dem., should be appaulled that a convicted National Security chief would be hired to work for and advise a potential President of the United States.
