The VP Debate
debbyski
by debbyski  10-3-2008    9
"When it came to domestic issues, Ms. Palin mainly relied on enthusiasm and humor, talking about hockey moms, soccer moms and Joe Sixpack almost as often as she used the word “maverick” to describe Mr. McCain or herself. But she offered virtually no detail — beyond the Republican mantra of tax cuts — for how she and Mr. McCain would address the financial crisis or help Americans avoid foreclosure or what programs they would cut because of the country’s disastrous fiscal problems. Ms. Palin’s primary tactic was simply to repeat the same thing over and over: John McCain is a maverick. So is she. To stay on that course, she had to indulge in some wildly circular logic: America does not want another Washington insider. They want Mr. McCain (who has been in Congress for nearly 26 years). Ms. Palin condemned Wall Street greed and said she and Mr. McCain would “demand” strict oversight. In virtually the next breath, she said government should “get out of the way” of American business."

business cliches
sylviadafox
by sylviadafox  6-19-2008
spoof letters from language pedants. One of them went like this: "Sir - Listening to my wireless, I heard a song with the chorus, 'She loves you yeah yeah yeah'. Later in the same song, insult was added to injury with yet another chorus, this time, 'She loves you yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah'. Whatever happened to that good old-fashioned word " yes"? What was even funnier than his column was the readers' response to it on the Telegraph website. Most of them had quite failed to notice that they were being laughed at, and seized on the opportunity to voice their own concerns over declining standards of modern English. One took issue with the preposition "on", wailing over its use in "on the weekend" and "on the team". Another despaired over "for free". A third deplored "different to".

OK, this is a little dry but I did find it stereotypical enough to clip... For example what do Leia Organa, Clark Kent, Arthur Pendragon, and pro wrestler Ric Flair all have in common??? All raised by people who are not their real family. No offense to Ric but that I could think of him as a real world example!

Hillary's CUTTING OFF NOSE TO SPITE FACE!
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  4-19-2008    1
Now read this article of more Hillary nose destruction... http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/washington/2008/04/hillary-clin-10.html Hillary Clinton dissed party activists and MoveOn.org Apparently Hillary Clinton hasn't always been enamored with the rambunctious nature of the historic fight for the Democratic presidential nomination. Speaking to financial backers after Super Tuesday, she blamed the party's activists and MoveOn.org for her early primary and caucus defeats, according to an item over at The Huffington Post. "MoveOn.org endorsed -- which is like a gusher of money that never seems to slow down," the item quotes Clinton as saying (there's audio on the site).

Liberal wedge issues
sillysam
by sillysam  4-16-2008
Any topic that conservatives bring up that libs don't wish to talk about is, to them, a wedge issue that drives Americans apart. As if these issues are simply used to drive the country into two parts. No, these issues are important to conservatives. Funny that one rarely hears the words- wedge issues- come out of a conservatives mouth.

Torley
by Torley  3-12-2008
Your answer within. These guys should team up with NewBlueFX and do some serious asskicking in the cinematic industry! Not that they're *not* doing that already, of course. ;) The trailers on here are so well-put-together and really illustrate a lot of what we've come to take for granted, sometimes as cliches. But really, it's movie magic!

Gender Cliches TRUE: German Scientists
righthand
by righthand  3-9-2008    2
In Germany, Austria and Switzerland girls continue to be pressured into defining themselves based on the role of the "good mother." In contrast, society views women who are successful in their careers with suspicion. That also explains the relatively low number of women in leadership positions in these countries, according to Henning Sass of Aachen's university clinic. 65% of students are female in the first years of medical studies, while at the upper ranks of the medical profession, only 5% of the professors, chief and senior physicians are women.

Creating Friendly AI
Fast T friend
by Fast T friend  3-3-2008
Imagine, for a moment, that you walk up and punch an AI in the nose. Does the AI punch back? Perhaps and perhaps not, but punching back will not be instinctive. A sufficiently young AI might stand there and think: "Hm. Someone's fist just bumped into my nose." In a punched human, blood races, adrenaline pumps, the hands form fists, the stance changes, all without conscious attention. For a young AI, focus of attention shifts in response to an unexpected negative event - and that's all.

5500-year-old Plaza found in Peru
invictus
by invictus  2-26-2008
Discovery of Caral (dated to 3000 BCE) was a shock for established archaeology, who rejected the existence of an ancient civilization in south America, prior to 1200 BCE. Now the discovery of Sechin Bajo appears to be a second shock, which pulls the date back to 3500 BCE. These two findings alone, show that Peru hosted an important, unknown civilization, 400 years before the Egyptian kingdom was founded by Menes and at least 250 years before the Sumerians took control of southern Mesopotamia. Amazing discoveries forces historians to reconsider their established "ancient history" cliches.

Republican Hypocrites Release Campaign Ads in Spanish
BobbyRutan
by BobbyRutan  1-23-2008
More: Think Progress also noted: "Last fall, the owner of Philadelphia cheesesteak restaurant Geno's Steaks endorsed Giuliani. Vento became notorious for posting a sign in his restaurant that read: 'This is America. When Ordering Please Speak English.' " The Giuliani campaign posted a video clip of Vento's endorsement from an interview with Fox News' Neil Cavuto on the campaign's official YouTube site. In an October 3, 2007, Philadelphia Inquirer column, Monica Yant Kinney reported that during a visit to Vento's restaurant Giuliani told a local reporter: "Whenever I'm at Geno's, I order in English." As campaign cliches go, it doesn't get much better than Giuliani dropping by Joey Vento's neon palace in South Philly. The Italian American who wants to seal the border, bonding with the Italian American who once told a reporter that immigrants are infecting the U.S. with disease because "Mexicans play and drink out of the same water."

Sad Argument From Oxford Grad
AtlLiberal
by AtlLiberal  10-7-2007    1
I started this article with high hopes that the author, being an Oxford graduate, would bring a certain amount of intellectual weight to his argument. Boy, was I disappointed. Even an Oxford education doesn't protect one from the hold of superstition. Johnson uses the same old tired cliches and discredited arguments to back up his claims. What struck me most is the lack of imagination the "scholar" brings to his argument. And then he makes up this "militant atheism that threatens our happiness and well-being". What a load of drivel. How shallow his faith must be!
