Who Is And Isn't Qualified To Speak On Global Warming?
merrie
by merrie  9-28-2009
This is different than the Times’ (and others’) treatment of and lack of interest in the academic training of the individual regularly cited without such “just an economist” commentary as a leading and essentially unimpeachable authority, the economist and former railway engineer Rajendra Pachauri. The Times has even hailed Pachauri in the past as the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s chief “climatologist”. Climatology is a specialty field if ever there was one but a qualification which Pachauri, for all of his other virtues toiling for years in the UN vineyards, attained by virtue of being appointed to head the IPCC. This is unfairly disparate treatment. Read more http://biggovernment.com/2009/09/25/who-is-and-isnt-qualified-to-speak-on-global-warming/#more-8630

Obama Flunks Global Warming 101 on Fargo

In this case it is flooding and people living in naturally high-risk areas. Former colleague Professor Bill Carlyle told me the Red River valley in Canada and the US was the largest most densely drained agricultural region in the world. Despite this there is no evidence that flooding has increased. Massive floods in 1776, 1826, 1950, and 1997 are maximum events of the natural pattern for the region. The 1826 flood was 3 times larger than 1950 and indications are 1776 was even worse. Each spring the snow melts first in the southern end of the Red River valley then drains to the river which flows north (Tell the Washington bureaucrat). This creates a problem because the river is still frozen and ice jams frequently block drainage causing more severe flooding. It is not a “no risk” world. We can reduce but not eliminate risk. Insurance and government assistance offset but do not eliminate risk. In fact, you can argue they aggravate the problem.

Earth on the Brink of an Ice Age
pkronfield
by pkronfield  1-11-2009    2
Elements of the astronomical theory of Ice Age causation were first presented by the French mathematician Joseph Adhemar in 1842, it was developed further by the English prodigy Joseph Croll in 1875, and the theory was established in its present form by the Czech mathematician Milutin Milankovich in the 1920s and 30s. In 1976 the prestigious journal “Science” published a landmark paper by John Imbrie, James Hays, and Nicholas Shackleton entitled “Variations in the Earth's orbit: Pacemaker of the Ice Ages,” which described the correlation which the trio of scientist/authors had found between the climate data obtained from ocean sediment cores and the patterns of the astronomical Milankovich cycles. Since the late 1970s, the Milankovich theory has remained the predominant theory to account for Ice Age causation among climate scientists, and hence the Milankovich theory is always described in textbooks of climatology and in encyclopaedia articles about the Ice Ages.

"Haughton's Drop", Hanging, Dublin Zoo, Darwin, Wallace, history
righthand
by righthand  7-11-2008    2
Haughton House in Dublin Zoo is being restored to its ancient glories in honour of the great patron and scientist. On a visit to Bronx Park, New York he became a bit bored by the record of perfection which he received on all sides, so he enquired about the financial aspect of the institution: how did they pay for their obviously princely expenditure? So-and-so, he was told, but of course the main source of income was gate-money. “What ?” asked Haughton, “do you mean you charge people to get in?” “Of course; don’t you?” “Oh! no - we let them in free; then we enlarge one of our celebrated lions and charge them to get out! We do better that way.”

From Climate Alarmism to Climate Realism
Rustee
by Rustee  3-13-2008
As written by the President of the Czech Republic: What I see in Europe (and in the U.S. and other countries as well) is a powerful combination of irresponsibility, of wishful thinking, of implicit believing in some form of Malthusianism, of cynical approach of those who themselves are sufficiently well-off, together with the strong belief in the possibility of changing the economic nature of things through a radical political project.

Cold Water on Global Warming
willhelm
by willhelm  3-1-2008    7
by Thomas Sowell: excerpt: on March 2nd to March 4th - weather permitting. It is called an “International Conference on Climate Change” that will examine the question “Global Warming: Crisis or Scam?” Among those present will be professors of climatology, along with scientists in other fields and people from other professions. They come from universities in England, Hungary, and Australia, as well as from the United States and Canada, and include among other dignitaries the former president of the Czech Republic, Václav Havel. All told, there will be 98 speakers and 400 participants. The theme of the conference is that “there is no scientific consensus on the causes or likely consequences of global warming.”

Little Net Global Warming In The Past 70 Years
merrie
by merrie  12-13-2007
Derived from a large number of tree-ring density chronologies obtained from some 400 sites in the western United States, Canada, Europe, Fennoscandia and northern Siberia, this temperature record shows a dramatic departure from the instrumental temperature record over the last 70 years, with the instrumental record depicting dramatic 20th century warming, but with the tree-ring record showing nothing of the sort. It is very likely, therefore, that enhanced tree growth induced by the historical rise in the air's CO2 content - possibly augmented by enhanced nitrogen deposition (Idso, 1995) - has been increasing the growth rates of trees all around the world for over a century or more , Furthermore, this growth enhancement has been accelerating over time (Phillips and Gentry); and it is this ever-intensifying biological phenomenon that some are using to bolster their claim that the earth is warming at an ever-increasing rate, when such may not really be the case.

Climate models vs reality
n2sooners
by n2sooners  12-9-2007    4
Lead author David Douglass elaborates: The observed pattern of warming, comparing surface and atmospheric temperature trends, does not show the characteristic fingerprint associated with greenhouse warming. The inescapable conclusion is that the human contribution is not significant and that observed increases in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases make only a negligible contribution to climate warming.

No climate skeptics in Texas?
jklugman
by jklugman  11-23-2007    11
Andrew Dessler teaches an atmospheric sciences class at Texas A&M. He contacted the global warming skeptics at demanddebate.com to ask them if they knew of any Texas-based experts who would be willing to come to his class to present the skeptical view. demanddebate.com could not find anyone. Dessler also talks East Texas Baptist University's attempt to have a debate between the Texas State Climatologist and a TX-based global warming skeptic. They couldn't find an expert in geology or climatology who disputed global warming in Texas, and had to fly in a guy from Virginia.

Dissidents Against Dogma
n2sooners
by n2sooners  6-11-2007    7
"A geologist has a much longer perspective. There are several salient points about our earth that the greenhouse theorists overlook (or are not aware). The first of these is that the planet has never been this cool. There is abundant fossil evidence to support this--from plants of the monocot order (such as palm trees) in the rocks of Cretaceous Age in Greenland and warm water fossil in sedimentary rocks of the far north. this is hardly the first warming period in the earth's history. The present global warming is hardly unique. It is arriving pretty much "on schedule." One thing, for sure, is that the environmental community has always spurned any input from geologists (many of whom are employed by the petroleum industry). No environmental conference, such as Kyoto, has ever invited a geologist, a paleontologist, a paleoclimatologist. It would seem beneficial for any scientific investigatory to include such scientific disciplines.

Foremost expert in climatology debunks "global warming" hysteria
pkronfield
by pkronfield  5-6-2007    2
This guy says the global warming hysteria is nonsense: Reid A. Bryson holds the 30th PhD in Meteorology granted in the history of American education. Emeritus Professor and founding chairman of the University of Wisconsin Department of Meteorology—now the Department of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences—in the 1970s he became the first director of what’s now the UW’s Gaylord Nelson Institute of Environmental Studies. He’s a member of the United Nations Global 500 Roll of Honor—created, the U.N. says, to recognize “outstanding achievements in the protection and improvement of the environment.” He has authored five books and more than 230 other publications and was identified by the British Institute of Geographers as the most frequently cited climatologist in the world.

Scientists threatened for not drinking the cool-aid!

Okay, so the global warming extremists are so eager to save the world that they're not afraid to kill the people on it? I know eco-terrorism isn't a new thing, but to kill a scientist because he's not drinking the cool-aid? I mean, to look at it as any other political argument (Which it is!), wouldn't threaten to kill any lib for wanting to nationalize heathcare! (I'll fight it tooth and nail, but no threats)
