POPS So Good The Washington Independent on the prospect for “Church-Pike” hearings by the Senate Judiciary Committee, another great idea to hamstring and distract intelligence services in wartime that Obama may discover, sort of like closing Guantanamo, isn’t the greatest idea. Human rights groups want some drama with their national angst. Detainee Truth Commissions, please. Because fighting al-Qaeda = Apartheid.

POPSA country's productivity increase as its gender gap narrows 3. The greater standing women have, the more everyone benefits: Industrialized countries can still grow their economies substantially by elevating women. Closing the employment gender gap "would have huge economic implications for the developed economies, boosting US GDP by as much as 9%, Eurozone GDP by as much as 13% and Japanese GDP by as much as 16%," according to the report

POPSMarriage Equality Begins in Connecticut Behold, America, as society fails to collapse in Connecticut, just as it didn't in Massachusetts. Families are strengthened, not destroyed, churches aren't closing, the devil doesn't rule, and children don't "go gay" in droves. In other words, it's just people getting married. Time to grow the hell up, America.

POPSEmail President Bush To Grant Executive Pardon To Border Agents for drug smuggling. The Washington Times quotes T. J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council, as being critical with the timing of the indictment against Aldrete Davila. "Osvaldo Aldrete Davila should have been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law for these felonies two years ago," said Mr. Bonner, whose group represents more than 12,000 Border Patrol agents. "This deliberate and unconscionable delay directly resulted in the wrongful incarceration of two innocent law-enforcement officers." According to Drug Enforcement Administration documents obtained by The Times, DEA investigators believed they had sufficient evidence to indict Aldrete Davila in late 2005, but their requests to do so were denied by Mr. Sutton's office.

POPSGodless Gaffe: North Carolina Candidate Dole’s ‘Faith-Based’ Attack Backfires I'm saddened to see such a blatant bigoted attack on fellow Americans. And I'm also saddened when no one stood up for those whom she truly slandered, the Atheists. Who cares if the person she named in the attack is actually a Christian? It's bad form to misrepresent the person, but to discredit the multitude of Atheist and to have no one point out that Atheists are Americans to. I now have to fight the bile rising in my through. Dole, you don't deserve any respect, and Hagan, Sham on you for taking the low road, and not standing up for ALL of the fellow North Carolinians you profess to represent.

POPSElection Night Timetable 10 p.m.: Voting ends in GOP-held, Iowa, Montana and Nevada, a combined 15 votes. Losing these would be a setback for McCain, while winning them would be a boon for Obama. Utah's five votes are a certainty for McCain. • 11 p.m.: Four states — mega-prize California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington — are expected to quickly give Obama a combined 77 votes, while Idaho is expected to award its four votes to McCain. • 1 a.m.: Capping off the night is Alaska, where GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin is governor. The Republican ticket is a shoo-in for those three votes. And then it's over. Or not.

POPSPalin asks if Democrats think terrorists are 'the good guys' WTF? This Bush/Cheney style of demonizing is what is wrong with this country. Mind you, if McCain/Palin win, the cultural divide in this country will only increase because they will continue to demonize and question the patriotism of anyone who does not agree with them. If I question the bloated Pentagon budget, I must hate America, including my parents, my brothers and sisters and all of their children, my grandmother, all my friends, all of their families, and everyone in my hometown. I want to destroy it all. Do people on the right really think this about people on the left? Without knowing me, without knowing the good I have done in this country and in this world? That I really, really want to destroy all I love because I dare to question Bush/Cheney and/or the military/industrial complex and it's continued reliance on perpetual conflict?!? It's absolutely fuckin' ludicrous!

POPSAl Gore: When Powerpoint Gets in the Way Al Gore gives a great opening and closing to his presentation here, using very personal stories, humor and high interactivity with the audience. You can feel him relating to his audience. He comes across clearly and authentically. However, notice how that fades when he goes into his set of 15 text slides. These could have been much stronger with less text. This would have made it easier for the audience to read, and allowed him to connect more with the audience. Instead he's doing a combination of reading the slide, rewording part of the message and then adding on some talking points. This tend to come across more as a scripted lecture and less an invitation to join him, which is the atmosphere he creates so well in the beginning and end of the presentation. You can see additional comments at the TED website: http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/al_gore_on_averting_climate_crisis.html

POPSIs newsprint 'giving in' to the internet? We have all seen this coming and now several newspapers are giving up their ink and paper editions to save costs. I am sure more wll soon follow. I used to read a daily newspaper until about five years ago and haven't looked back. Some people claim they need the 'feel' of paper in their hands to get the daily news but the majority of us get our news from television and the internet. Do you still get newspaper delivery?
