Star Factory Shows Off Three Kinds of Nebulae
tabsey
by tabsey  8-27-2009
The Trifid’s third kind of nebula can be seen in the dark stripes that criss-cross the rest of the image. Called dark nebulae because of their light-obscuring properties, these clouds of gas and dust contain the remnants of previous star births. As higher pressure and temperatures build up inside the streaks of gas, nuclear fusion will lead to the formation of yet more stars

The giant anvil-shaped cloud hovering 75,000ft above Earth
clip-on-tie
by clip-on-tie  7-30-2009
"A giant, anvil-shaped cloud bubbles up towards the Earth's stratosphere, looming over West Africa. The amazing formation would be invisible to anyone on the ground and would even be obscure from a regular passenger jet since they can reach up to 75,000ft. But astronauts captured the astonishing picture from hundreds of miles up as they orbited the globe on the International Space Station. Anvil clouds are formed mostly from ice and normally form in the upper parts of thunderstorms. They get their shape from the fact that rising warm air in thunderstorms expands and spreads out as the air bumps up against the bottom of the stratosphere. Streaks of snow are often seen falling out of the edges of anvils. This light snow usually evaporates as it falls through the relatively dry air surrounding the upper part of the thunderstorm."

Lesser Known Facts About Lightening
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  6-8-2009    4
There is a story towards the end of the article which is fascinating. "A dramatic report of ball lightening comes from a housewife in the Midlands are of England on August 8, 1975. She was in her kitchen in Smethwick during a very strong thunderstorm. A sphere of light about ten centimeters in diameter and surrounded by a bright purple halo appeared over the stove. The witness is quoted in saying, 'The ball seemed to hit me below the belt, as it were, and I automatically brushed it away from me and it disappeared. Where I brushed it away there appeared a redness and swelling on my left hand. It seemed as if my gold wedding ring was burned into my finger.' She also reported that it vanished with a bang."

Giant Mystery Blob Discovered Near Dawn of Time
merrie
by merrie  4-24-2009    1
The cloud predates similar blobs, known as Lyman-Alpha blobs, which existed when the universe was 2 billion to 3 billion years old. Researchers named their new find Himiko, after an ancient Japanese queen with an equally murky past. Himiko holds more than 10 times as much mass as the next largest object found in the early universe, or roughly the equivalent mass of 40 billion suns. At 55,000 light years across, it spans about half the diameter of our Milky Way Galaxy. Lyman-Alpha blobs remain a mystery because existing telescopes have a hard time peering so far back to nearly the dawn of the universe. Himiko sits right on the doorstep of an era called the reionization epoch, which lasted between 200 million and 1 billion years after the Big Bang. After making the initial sighting with the Subaru telescope in Hawaii in 2007, Ouchi and his colleagues followed up using instruments from the Keck/DEIMOS and Magellan/IMACS arrays.

Odd Comet Possibly from Another Star System
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  12-3-2008
The oddball could shed light on the formation and evolution of comets. These blobs of dust and frozen gases may be the oldest, most primitive bodies in the solar system. In fact, they hold the earliest record of material from the nebula that formed the sun and planets.

Winter Sunrise Creates Apocalyptic Clouds: A Terrifying Beauty
urbanlife
by urbanlife  12-2-2008    1
Once-in-a-lifetime photographic event: the dramatic pictures were taken in north west Greenland by British Arctic photographers Bryan and Cherry Alexander. The pictures show a thin layer of medium-level cloud that has been pummeled by winds churned up between the glaciers below. The angle of the rising sun helped to highlight the different colors and intricate patterns. 'It looked apocalyptic and like a scene from one of the Lord of the Rings movies,' Mr Cherry said.

Orion twins show not all are identical
pokkets
by pokkets  6-30-2008
The fact that the twins are different means the study of their eclipses, can shed more light on the formation of stars, and they are one of the yardsticks astronomers can use to test their theories on star formation. The information gained can help revise some theories that exist at the moment, including the ages of star types.
