POPSCodex Sinaiticus While it is fabulous to be able to get news in a second and wonderful to view online albums of photos from friends, one of the best parts of the Internet and its functionality is getting access to materials to which ordinary people would never have access. The project to digitize the Codex Sinaiticus has been several years in the making and it is finally coming online this week. While most people won’t be able to read the ancient text, having access and being able to puzzle over the words yourself without an intermediary provides the opportunity to translate the Bible yourself and make your own interpretation.

POPSGospel of Judas - 2 I was asked to watch the National Geographic movie; I did and found this web site. I think the Gospel of Judas reveals how an ancient text in very bad shape (15% is missing ) still has the ability to say something authoritative to this age. Although 15 out of every 100 words are not there the Gospel of Judas… suggests new insights into the disciple who betrayed Jesus. strengthens the claim that there was a Jesus, disciples, a Judas, authorities, an arrest, a crucifixion, etc. affirms the Gnostic teaching that the body is evil, the spirit good and that the spirit is locked up in the prison of the body. All of these assertions we are to believe based on a text written hundreds of years after the fact. What National Geographic would have us believe is… that we can learn something substantial from corrupt texts that we can learn someth

POPSUndeciphered Scripts - Good Resource This was one of my "archaic" clips that went private a long while ago for exceeding the character limit. I'm re-clipping it now because so many new clippers joined since then and I believe this is a great source on ancient scripts and writing systems.

POPSClipXploration - Calendars 1 There is not just one Aztec calendar, there are two more or less independent systems. One calendar, called the xiuhpohualli, has 365 days. It describes the days and rituals related to the seasons, and therefor might be called the agricultural year or the solar year. The other calendar has 260 days. In Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, it is called the tonalpohualli or, the day-count. Most information on this Internet-site refers to the tonalpohualli, which is the sacred calendar.
