Step Right Up and Buy...The Holy Grail!
William Hung
by William Hung  Yesterday 4:06 AM
FTA: My favorite two items are: An original TIE fighter model (with battle damage) from Star Wars (IV: A New Hope), and, even though it doesn't fit at all with anything else I've mentioned, a signed photograph of Abraham Lincoln. Anyone got $325,000 they're not doing anything with?

Obama's Youth: Hope, Change And Snappy Uniforms
merrie
by merrie  7-21-2008    2
50 hours a year. 100 hours for college students, provided their type of service is deemed acceptable by a sprawling new Federal bureaucracy. Oh, and Obama's going to double the size of the Peace Corps while quadrupling AmeriCorps. I'm curious if anyone will be left to fill all the newly vacated private sector jobs. St. Barack concluded his speech with this gem: "Loving your country must mean accepting your responsibility to do your part to change it." But what if I love my country the way it is? Throwing more kerosene on the mob's torches, Obama is moving his nomination acceptance speech to Denver's 75,000-seat outdoor stadium. And is thinking about a speech at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate. Odd that he didn't choose Nuremberg. We've talked a lot about Liberal Fascism. Apparently, it wasn't a moment too soon. UPDATE: A Lizard invasion? Thanks for the LGF link, Charles!

Explorers, Daredevils & Record Setters of the 30's
revenantdm
by revenantdm  7-21-2008
The Twenties and Thirties have always been an area of interest to me. The Roaring Twenties, where we drank Bathtub Gin and danced the Charleston. Speakeasies everywhere! (One reporter did an experiment in 25 different US Cities where he timed how long it would take to be able to buy illegal liquor. Shortest time was 21 seconds. Longest was 3 hours and 19 minutes. That must have been a "Dry County.") America was in love with the "new" vogue and any fads it could find. Just a few examples: phone booth stuffing (25 college students at University of Chicago), Marathon Dancing, Flagpole Sitting, Racecar Driving, Monopoly, the :"Talkies," Radio Programs, Coney Island, Daredevil Flying, Long-Distance Swimming, Harry Houdini, Solo Flights, Self-Made Millionaires, the Gangster (especially Al Capone who courted the media), Exploring the Unknown, and Political Radical Causes! History is amazing!

Professor Carey Cooper, a psychologist who specialises in sex differences at Lancaster University, said: "It is probably a combination of the genetics and hard wiring of the brain together with the social imprinting of gender that has led to the behavioural differences we now see between men and women."

There is a connection between this and the previous clip. The first is the result of the collapse of the boundaries between the public and the private so that there is no longer behaviour which is deemed wrong in public. The second is an attempt to reconstruct that boundary.

Obama’s No-Brainer on Education
schreibe
by schreibe  7-20-2008
The stakes couldn't be higher. The United States now ranks 25th among 30 industrialized countries in math. "If I told you your basketball team finished in 25th place, you'd be outraged," says former West Virginia governor Bob Wise, president of the Alliance for Excellent Education. When the landmark "A Nation at Risk" report was issued 25 years ago, the education system was ailing, but the United States was still No. 1 in college-graduation rates. Now we are No. 21. "We simply have not progressed," says former Colorado governor Roy Romer, who heads a commission that recently updated the report. "The rest of the world has." For example, the average European nation has 13 more school days than we do.

Bee smart, or how human decide.
balthazarus
by balthazarus  7-19-2008    1
The results were similar when the numerals 3 and 4 were replaced with easily distinguishable clouds of 30 and 60 dots. But when the numerals were replaced with clouds of 30 or 40 dots - making it much more difficult to distinguish between the two - subjects veered towards the more certain outcome. The researchers subjected honeybees to similar trials, using the bees' sense of smell and 2 microliter drops of sugar solution payoffs of varying concentrations. The bees tended towards the risky strategy only when their choice was easily discernable, paralleling their human counterparts.

Liberalism: Can it survive?
esundby

Just another clip about bitter liberals. This was written by John Leo in the U.S. News & World Report, March 7th 2005. I clipped a great paragraph that I think sums up so many of the liberals I've encountered(perhaps not all, but many). The entire article is worth a read.
