Bees Can Count To Four
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-28-2008    10
They really have a lot of the capacities that we so-called higher human beings possess. This, from an insect! Yet humans still treat animals as second-class citizens of this planet. Let's hope we still have bees around in the future. The bee die-off, or "colony collapse disorder" has still not been resolved. We need them, more than they need us, that's for sure.

'Flexi-bee' could pre-empt varroa mite.
pokkets
by pokkets  8-14-2008
Of course there is the honey, but there is also the critical role bees play in pollination, particularly crop fertilization. The loss of honey bee populations has the potential to have a devastating effect in many crops that at the moment we take for granted. There are two suggestions. One is to prevent the mite laying by altering a chemical released by the bees. The other disrupts the life cycle of the mite. It doesn't have to be either/or, both approaches need to be tried, in addition to further suggestions. The main thing we have to worry about taking into account our record of 'fixing' problems in nature (we don't seem to be that good at it) Is that our efforts don't further endanger the bee populations At the moment however, if we do nothing we will lose the bees. There is the possibility, that bees will develop their own resistance to the mite naturally. Selective breeding may be an option. I would be more inclined to listen to a beekeeper than a geneticist,.

From a selfish (human-centred) point of view, here's another reason why food prices will continue to rise at an accelerating rate. From the point of view of the bees, it must be even worse.

Mysterious Bee Deaths Linked To Pesticides?
merrie
by merrie  4-6-2008
Comment hsutton wrote: Pesticides "in and of itself is probably not the cause of the honeybee's dying. What are you feeding them? If the answer is a combination of high fructose corn syrup and water then it should be noted that some time back a genetic modifier introduced into "corn" is the real culprit. This modifier causes the corn to make it's own "pesticide". Going back to feeding them real Sugar/Water will stop most of the problem. Monsanto and other companies are putting these things in 90% of the vegetable crops in the US, and have been for some time. Whatever it's doing to the honey bees it will also eventually do to us. If this trend continues human beings will start dying from "unknown" causes sometime in the very near future too. Comment by subscriber:hsutton

Emergency honey bee plan in wings
pokkets
by pokkets  3-28-2008
Wild European honey bees pollinate fruits and vegetables near the hives, and so farmers rely on them for a crop. They are discussing ways of introducing clean queens into the wild, that have been hatched by commercial farmers if the Varroa mites wipe the existing bees out. Apart from this patch, they are also discussing biosecurity, and reviewing the entire pollination industry. They will also discuss the use of native bees, which are not affected by the mite. Native bees will only be useful for some crops.

Royal jelly triggers queen genes
pokkets
by pokkets  3-14-2008
I'm sure any beekeeper can tell you that a queen bee is just a worker that has been fed royal jelly, They wanted to study the process in more detail, because the principle is thought to work in other animals, including humans, and they were also trying to work out how to make 'clean' queens in an attempt to help repair the damage to the honey industry with what has become affected by something known as Colony Collapse disorder. They achieved the same results as royal jelly when they switched of a gene Dnmt3, which showed demetylization of DNA led to the development of certain traits. Studies continue, but in humans things like obesity, infertility, longevity, and brain disorders, are thought to be affected by the chemical effects on genes

Researchers Closer To Solving Disappearing Bee Mystery
merrie
by merrie  2-25-2008    2
Dennis Avery, director of the Center for Global Food Issues and senior fellow of the Hudson Institute said, "Of course, blaming pesticides has been the standard political tactic of the environmental movement since Rachel Carson wrongly blamed DDT for thinning the egg shells of eagles 40 years ago. "Again, the activists blamed before they knew the answer," Avery continued. "That's their tactic: Find a problem, blame it on something they want to get rid of, and put that perception into the public mind before anyone has time to do real science on the real problems. Bees play an integral role in the world food supply, providing pollination for 90 fruit and vegetable crops that in the United States alone generate $14 billion in annual revenue for U.S. farmers. The almond crop in California, for example, requires and cannot survive without bee pollination.

Silent loss of honeybees continues

Many of these commercial beekeepers are on the verge of loosing their livelihood..........and profiteering chemical companies refute the claims or are slow to react. Similarly, scientists leading the research into colony-collapse disorder remain non-committal, claiming a yet-to-be identified microorganism capable of causing disease may be responsible. All too late for the beekeepers, and remember honeybees pollinate many of our food items such as apples, nuts, citrus fruit etc.
