Bees Can Count To Four
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  10-28-2008    10
They really have a lot of the capacities that we so-called higher human beings possess. This, from an insect! Yet humans still treat animals as second-class citizens of this planet. Let's hope we still have bees around in the future. The bee die-off, or "colony collapse disorder" has still not been resolved. We need them, more than they need us, that's for sure.

U.S. Forces Attack Inside Syria for First Time
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-26-2008
This article, from the UK, supported this attack. Maybe this makes good grounds for discussion. One thing, right away, jumped out at me was the last sentence in the clip here saying one reason for this was to break Syria away from Iran and encourage Syria into peace talks with Israel. #1: All decades of so-called 'peace talks,' involving Israel are false, a charade. They say peace, they expand their settlements (the main Arab gripe). Again, they say peace, they expand their settlements, etc., etc., etc. #2: Maybe this was OK? Maybe not? Maybe there was another way to handle it? #3: Very interesting how from the very first English colony in the so-called New World, the English had conflicts with Native Americans. The first tribe they wiped out was not the direct enemy, but a tribe they accused of 'not doing enough to stop this enemy." Same we say about Iran now. Same we say about Syria.Pakistan. What? We want them to fight our wars we start in their backyard? Or a

Djibouti warns UN Eritrea's acts may lead to war
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  10-24-2008
Guelleh said Djibouti pulled its forces back from the border area and has pursued a diplomatic and peaceful solution. But "the Eritreans continue to reinforce their troops and perpetrate other incursions on our territory," he said. Intensive regional and international efforts to resolve the crisis have been rejected by Eritrea, Guelleh said. "If the lack of action continues ... this would not only encourage but would actually reward the attitude of Eritrea," he warned. "This gives my country only one option -- the option of war."

Hope for rare corals
saan-kpa
by saan-kpa  10-24-2008
What researchers thought were the most-threatened corals were actually taking care of their species by breeding hybrids. :) This makes me happy, but it doesn't mean that we can go on ruining reefs. Remember, these creatures take ages to grow.

Caste in the colony: How fate is determined between workers and queens
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-21-2008
How, then, is it determined which individuals, as developing larvae, becoming queens or different types of workers? A collaborative research team of scientists at four universities has found that caste determination in the Florida harvester ant is much more than meets the eye. Larvae become different castes (small workers, large workers, or new queens) based largely on the nutrition they receive. Those fed more insects than seeds are more likely to become larger individuals (queen>large worker>small worker). However, genetic differences also contribute and bias the larva's developmental pathway. Even once caste is determined, nutritional, social (colony size), and genetic factors all contribute, but in different ways, to how big an individual grows. "Caste determination in most social insects likely involves both nature and nurture, but most interestingly in this species, these two forces contribute differently in different castes," says lead researcher Chris R. Smith of the Univers

Evolution in a Bottle
Mohir
by Mohir  9-15-2008
Over time the bacteria evolved to better suit their environment, adapting to replicate faster on the all-glucose diet. But one colony suddenly took off, consuming the previously indigestible citrate - a molecule that literally would not fit through the original bacteria's membrane. A new breed of E. Coli had evolved to consume the available resources and, over a multi-generational evolutionary battle, came to outperform the original glucose eaters. Because of the daily samples, there is now a complete genetic paper trail of the changes (although full identification and understanding of the changes will take a little longer). This is an incredible breakthrough in evolutionary research, and a pretty nice argument to break out in the creationism 'debates' ("Prove evolution!" "Okay, I've got it right here IN THIS BOTTLE!")
