Obama’s CHANGE.GOV Site Has, uh, Changed Quite A Bit
merrie
by merrie  11-9-2008    3
$4,000 in value for 100 hours is $40 an hour, tax-free. For most students, because they pay no federal income tax, this will amount to an annual handout of $4,000 less the value of the service they provide (bravely assuming that it’s productive), which would be at most the private-sector equivalent of about $12 an hour with benefits, or $1,200. Space doesn’t permit me to go into all of the mind-boggling distortions this would lead to, but here’s a start (some information was obtained from the tables listed at this page at collegeboard.com): How do you manage a program with the equivalent of almost 4 million 400,000 full-time employees efficiently and effectively? Wal-Mart, which is I believe the nation’s largest employer, has 2.1 million employees. (Ironic/never happen suggestion of the day: Maybe Uncle Sam should outsource program administration to Wal-mart. At least they might keep it under control).

Blazing speed of Internet
aklimento
by aklimento  11-5-2008    2
It can be gigabytes per second, downloading and uploading. All we going to get are good antenna and old-fashioned radio receiver for short wave signal. It means the end for cable and phone providers, information in digital form is free from noises, usual for analog broadcasting. Soon we are going to pay only for devices, which connect us to the Internet, hanging everywhere in the air. Like love in spring.;)

November is National Runaway Prevention Month
Delilah1234
by Delilah1234  11-2-2008
When a youth runs away, the impact is felt throughout the entire community. All of us – individuals, businesses, community groups, teachers, elected officials, and human service agencies – are encouraged to participate in National Runaway Prevention Month. Working together to identify resources and to help youth develop life skills can make the difference between a youth running away, or a youth finding needed resources.

Excellence Unrecognized if a Utility
klanih
by klanih  10-30-2008
I'm an Electric Engineer for SDG&E and work in operations. Operations includes hundreds of employees--linemen, dispatchers, engineers, relay techs, and more--who maintain the electric distribution infrastructure, respond to daily outage situations, & work 24/7 should a major event occur (like the 2007 firestorm). I do my job well. I do it with pride and strive for excellence. The people that work with me are dedicated and skilled - we are a great team. We have each sacrificed evenings with family and weekend plans because we understand that operations in 24/7. When I read this story I know we (SDG&E) deserve the two awards. But, will the public hear about this? There's been NO coverage of it. Instead, there's the SD Union Tribune and their one-sided articles about SDG&E & avaricious lawyers seeking gain from acts of nature. I guess it's just part of working for a utility - the CA public has no appreciation for 24/7 reliable electricity. What's an engineer to do, but her best!

Saving America From Obama
merrie
by merrie  10-30-2008    1
of the US Communist Party, unrepentant former Weather Underground terrorists, and a minister who preaches anti-Americanism. The head of the Black Muslim movement, Louis Farrakhan, recently declared him to be the “messiah.” We have learned too of his association with the Association of Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) initially as a “community organizer”, but ACORN is now revealed to have profited greatly from the Democrat programs that required banks and mortgage firms to make loans to the poor. It has led to the present financial crisis. ACORN is being investigated for massive voter registration abuses. Obama was closely associated with Antoine “Tony” Rezko, a convicted Chicago real estate developer who was a major political contributor. One would think that what we already know about Obama would be sufficient to dismiss him as a serious candidate for the presidency of the United States, but I am just as concerned about what we don’t know.

ALERT~~~William Ayers Connection To ACORN
merrie
by merrie  10-18-2008    19
If you know 60’s history, you know that the Weather Underground was an offshoot of SDS. There was some disagreement in the late 60’s and members of the SDS - Bill Ayers and his wife - left and formed/ joined the Weather Underground. Pardon me while I say Zoinks. Just your normal everyday community organizers. Bombs, ballots… Whatever. Oh, these next 19 days are gonna be a hoot. And if that doesn’t make you angry enough, did you know that $31 million of OUR tax dollars have gone to ACORN to steal this election *possibly* for The Weather Undergound? That’s $31 million on top of the $832,000 Bill Ayers’ Friend gave them to steal the election *possibly* for The Weather Underground. Greta Van Susteren thinks there’s something afoot – something akin to The Weather Undergound STEALING THE ELECTION http://gretawire.foxnews.com/2008/10/16/assigment-for-you/

Mapping the Bio Cosmos
Mohir
by Mohir  10-16-2008
Microbes are responsible for many biogeochemical cycles and are crucial to the continued function of the , Woese's efforts to clarify the evolution and diversity of microbes provided an invaluable service to ecologists and conservationists. Woese’s big idea is that primitive life existed as a community of cells that freely exchanged genes. They shared a basic translation system for making proteins, but had little else in common. These cells evolved as a community and not as distinct lineages. Before Woese, the tree of life had two main branches called prokaryotes and eukaryotes, the prokaryotes composed of cells without nuclei and the eukaryotes composed of cells with nuclei.

How Much Is That Pastor In the Window?
bryanknelson
by bryanknelson  10-11-2008
Come on Joel...let's fight against the mentality that churches simply want to get into your pockets. How much did Jesus charge for communicating the gospel in the Bible? Oh, I forgot...NOTHING! We don't charge for the light show at TBC. Want to know why? It communicates that we don't want the money of our guests. It communicates that it's a free gift to the community. It communicates that we want anyone to come to the event, even if you can't afford a car or car radio (we'll play it via boombox for you). There's a family attending TBC since the light show. They decided to attend because it blew them away that we didn't charge a penny or even take donations. Did the event cost TBC something? You bet you — on all fronts (money, time, volunteers, risk). Was it worth not charging? Judge by the width of God's smile. OK, you really can't — but I wonder which communicates a more positive feeling in the end about who Jesus is and what He came for. That's a message EVERYONE s

The Reality of Ayers
oscarrob
by oscarrob  10-10-2008
There is a quote from a movie and book whose title escapes me "The past is like a foreign country. People do things differently there." To people who grew up in the 60s and 70s although people who did what Ayers did were wrong and on the fringes, we understand the anger. Think of people's anger today at terrorism and remember that many were that angry at the US government. Think of parents who wouldn't let there children watch the news because of the death and destruction that came every day. Think of riots at political conventions and in the streets of cities across America. Think of the fear of nuclear attack from a volatile and powerful Russia. What Ayers did was wrong and should, by all rights have been punished. It was not, however, today.
