Vote With Your Fork
gingembre
by gingembre  11-4-2008
Vote against dependence on oil. Vote for lower health care costs. Vote against all disposable bags at the grocery store. Vote for healthy food choices at restaurants. Vote against unhealthy food choices. Vote for locally grown produce. Vote against the inhumane treatment of animals. Vote for organically-grown food. Vote against eating on the run. Vote for smaller portions. Vote against food waste. If you get frustrated at the current food environment, do something about it. Every dollar you spend, every food choice you make, and every meal you eat is an opportunity to vote for what you believe in. We can't change the way our food environment is structured overnight, but we can make a difference three times a day by voting with our forks.

Why The Left Can't Get It Right
merrie
by merrie  10-19-2008
Now: "Ask not what you can do for your country, ask what your country can do for you." There is well established pathology which explains why Democrats fuel campaigns with feelings, and if there is one uniformly defining liberal characteristic of Democrat leaders, it would be hypocrisy. Liberals protest economic recession, all the while suppressing economic growth with evermore taxes and regulations. Most of them are card-carrying members of the ignoble ranks of "useful idiots," those Western apologists for Marxist-Leninist-Maoist collectivism. Of course, that card reads: "Member, Democrat National Committee." Liberals advocate diversity, unless your views don't comport with their own doctrines of moral relativism. They want to preserve nature and the natural order but advocate homosexual "marriage." They oppose the death penalty for the most heinous of criminal sociopaths, but they support the execution of unborn children in their mothers' wombs.

Iranian ban on juvenile executions hailed
tommy2balmy
by tommy2balmy  10-17-2008
According to an interview with the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) Wednesday, the judicial deputy of the Prosecutor General said courts have been ordered to commute death sentences of juvenile offenders to prison terms. "According to this directive, punishments for offenders under the age of 18 , will be reduced to life in prison in the first stage and in the second stage will be reduced to 15 years," the deputy, Hussein Zebhi, stated, according to a translation provided by the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran. "In addition, in cases of good behaviour and signs of rehabilitation, juvenile offenders may qualify for conditional release under Islamic compassions guidelines," he told IRNA, the state news agency.

What the Strida folding bike is and isn't
Lexica
by Lexica  10-7-2008
I'm a little dubious of the part about the saddle is meant to be a little closer to the crank than with a normal bike, so you'll pedal with slightly bent knees. The advantage of this is that you can put both feet on the ground while in the saddle. Like I said, forget everything you know about bikes. Forget everything I know about bikes, okay. But pedaling or pumping with one's knees bent, regardless of what kind of vehicle or machine is being pedaled or pumped, is tiring and less efficient than having one's legs more fully extended. Hm.

The Large Hadron Rap was written by CERN science writer Kate McAlpine, a.k.a. "Alpine Kat," during her 40-minute Geneva-to-CERN commute. Among other things, this provides an incredibly useful and entertaining learning tool to discuss with students the physics behind the Large Hadron Collider and particle physics in general. All around creativity :)

The Future: The Hybrid with a Better Twist
DanaGarrett
by DanaGarrett  7-1-2008    1
It's this kind of technology America needs to turn to on a massive productive scale and perhaps even partly subsidize the production to help keep the costs down for consumers. That would put people to work in good paying jobs, greatly reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and we can tell McCain & Bush that we don't need more offshore oil just offshore wind power so we can charge our cars up at night.

Solar Energy in India and the Rise of Global Awareness
Naomi-K
by Naomi-K  7-1-2008
Very interesting: "per capita emissions." Does this mean that in the future, you could be taxed differently than your neighbour depending on what car you drive, how far you commute, how much you recycle. It's already slightly that way, for instance you can get tax rebates for buying solar panels. If it was broken down into 'per capita emissions' though, this would be a very different story.
