"Pizza" Parliament
egsnyder
by egsnyder  10-15-2008
Looks like Canada will have another "pizza", minority parliament after the November 14th, 2008 election. Harper won 144 seats, short of the 150+ required for a majority. $350 million spent just to get back to where we were the day before the election.

When The Messiah Speaks, The Youth Will Hear
merrie
by merrie  10-10-2008    5
“Not sure the Obama team will be thrilled about yet another crazy association,” added another commenter on the NewsBusters forums page. Previous reports have documented Obama’s links to Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga, onetime Weatherman bombing suspect Bill Ayers and Rev. Jeremiah Wright, who proclaimed a black liberation theology for 20 years while Obama was a member of his church, demanding that God “d***” America. “How much more have to come out on Obama before the O-Bots put down the kool-aid and say ENOUGH!” added a third. “Barack Obama was a community organizer like Jesus,” Cohen said during a one-minute speech on the floor of the U.S. House yesterday. “Pontius Pilate was a governor.” Democrats, including party strategist Donna Brazile and Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., made nearly identical biblical comparisons of the characters in this presidential election Is Barack Obama the Messiah? http://obamamessiah.blogspot.com/

Scientists adapt economics theory to trace brain's information flow
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  10-10-2008
Scientists believed the frontoparietal cortex was influencing the visual cortex, but the brain scanning approach they were using, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), can only complete scans about once every two seconds, which was much too slow to catch that influence in action. When researchers applied Granger causality, though, they were able to show conclusively that as volunteers waited for the stimulus to appear, the frontoparietal cortex was influencing the visual cortex, not the reverse.

"If you spend 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, then spend 20 months as the governor of a state with 650,000 people, you've got the most executive experience of anyone on either ticket, are the Commander in Chief of the Alaska military and are well qualified to lead the nation should you be called upon to do so because your state is the closest state to Russia." But, hey, I love it when she winks at me.

More Economic Cluelessness from the McCain Camp
Wisco
by Wisco  9-15-2008
Luskin goes on: McCain campaign adviser and former U.S. senator Phil Gramm was right in July when he said that our current state "is a mental recession." Maybe he was out of line when he added that the United States has become "a nation of whiners." But when it comes to the economy, we have surely become a nation of exaggerators. Yup, that 500 point drop in the Dow? That's all in your head! It's psychosomatic economic hypochondria. In fact, Luskin assured us yesterday that the "crisis" (his quotes, not mine) was over. Don't take investment advise from this man -- or his candidate.

"Yankee Hegemony Is Finished," Says Chavez
zalisan
by zalisan  9-14-2008    1
Chavez has called the U.S. Navy's newly re-established Fourth Fleet a threat. On Wednesday, he said he's sure "nuclear submarines pass under our noses" off Venezuela's coast. He said Venezuela is aiming to strengthen its "defensive capability with our strategic allies, and Russia is one of them." Later, Chavez called the U.S. the "empire" as he addressed troops at the christening of a newly built coast guard patrol ship. "Every day, relations between Venezuela and Russia will continue to deepen." He dismissed comparisons to the Cold War, but mentioned Cuba while saying he had been reviewing flight theory in a simulator in hopes of flying one of the Russian planes. Addressing his close friend Fidel Castro, Chavez said: "I'm going to fly a Tu-160. Fidel, I'm going to fly low past you there."

Roll Call story points out that the controversy around two VP picks, Dan Quayle in 1988 and Geraldine Ferraro in 1984, had little electoral impact those years. As in the stock market, though, past political performance is no guarantee of future results.

Blessed By Misfortune - McCain’s Speech
merrie
by merrie  9-5-2008
McCain has changed the GOP into the party outside the mess in DC and ready to clean it up. The liberals played the useful idiot roles by giving McCain the opportunity to go off speech and use them of an example of why hyper partisanship has destroyed DC. We don’t want purity to party, we want solutions to problems. McCain reminded us we can easily solve the aging and dysfunctional services like education, energy, taxes, security, etc. McCain, through his own riveting personal story of transformation from self centered cocky fly boy to dedicated man of his country, reintroduced himself to America, and reintroduced us to ourselves. The speech was a huge hit. And the comparisons to Obama were striking.

The Presidential Candidates and The "Experience Issue"
merrie
by merrie  9-2-2008
The line McCain’s been using “He’s Not Ready to Lead” is still viable – and should emphasize a discussion of Obama’s policies, not his job history—his radicalism, not his resume. Meanwhile, we should invite comparisons of Governor Palin’s experience with Obama’s: won’t the PTA connect more with middle class voters than “community organizer,” and property tax-cutting small town mayor count more than slippery State Senator who voted “present” a disquieting proportion of the time. In any event, both tickets now balance experience with youthful energy – but McCain is balancing it the right way, with the experience at the top. If Obama supporters now see an opening for attack in regard to Sarah Palin’s “lack” of experience, they will only succeed in bringing back to scrutiny Obama’s own leadership (in)experience. Let’s see that “Tale of the Tape” chart that Curt linked to by Jeff Emanuel, http://www.floppingaces.net/2008/08/30/palin-not-the-most-inexperienced/

The Value of Money
sahara
by sahara  8-29-2008    1
George Washington was paid a salary of $25,000 a year from 1789 to 1797 as the first president of the United States. The current salary of the president has recently been doubled to $400,000, to go with a $50,000 expense account, a generous pension and several other benefits. Has the remuneration improved? Making a comparison using the CPI for 1790 shows that $25,000 corresponds to over $585,000 today, so the recent raise means current presidents have an equal command over consumer goods as the Father of the Country. When comparing Washington's salary to an unskilled worker, or the measure of average income, GDP per capita, then the comparable numbers are $11 and $24 million. Granted that would not put him in the ranks of the top 25 executives today that make over $200 million. It would, however, be many times more than any elected official in this country is paid today.

More Biden Wiki Wackiness: A Whole Year Disappears
merrie
by merrie  8-25-2008    4
The Friday evening version of Joe Biden's Wikipedia entry remains firmly ensconced in a Firefox tab on my desktop, so it can be compared to its current form as Obama-Biden's busy bees brush it up. I'm doing comparisons as time allows, and there isn't much of it at the moment. What are the odds that anyone in traditional media will take any interest in the ongoing whitewash? Or is it really possible that they're participating in it?

New Data Shows U.S. Fertility Trends
Allison Van Dusen
by Allison Van Dusen  8-18-2008
The Census Bureau released a new report on fertility in America this morning, showing some interesting results. First off, the data says that 20% of women in their early 40s were childless in 2006, twice the percentage reported in the 1970s. It also suggests that the majority of new moms have or had careers and many of them graduate or professional degrees -though it doesn't detail how many women returned to work or quit to be stay-at-home moms. In terms of state-by-state comparisons, the numbers also show that moms in D.C., Mississippi and North Carolina were the most likely to have never married.
