POPSPoland Rejects U.S. Missile Shield Offer "But it is also the case that the government greatly raised expectations and that these were never very realistic. Poland does need some compensation (for hosting the interceptors) but they went too far in demanding Patriots." Polish President Lech Kaczynski, a right-wing opponent of the Tusk government and a strong supporter of the shield plan, is now likely to step up his attacks on the government. But analysts said the domestic political fallout would be limited as Polish voters are largely hostile to the project. Washington has said it wants Poland to host the interceptors but that it would look elsewhere if Warsaw declines to take part. "We don't see a need to allow anyone to share our oil," al-Shahristani said. Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said Monday that there is no American influence on the Iraqi government's oil decisions. "Politics does not come into this," al-Dabbagh said. "There is no preferential treatment for anyone, no matter who." State Department spokesman Tom Casey confirmed a small number of U.S. advisers were providing "technical support" to the Iraqi Oil Ministry. But he said "they are not there to try and give the Iraqis any kind of specific requests or to make decisions or to even push in an individual direction." Casey said the decision by the Iraqis not to announce contracts for several Western firms Monday was their own and not influenced by Washington.

POPSBush praises McCain for GI Bill McCain opposed McCain vehemently opposed this (Webb) bill, yet here's Bush thanking him for helping pass it! What is with these guys? McCain offered a skimpier version, insisting that paying college for Iraq vets would encourage them to leave the service when they could (better to offer them worse benefits so they'll stay, I guess, is the old soldier's plan). 32 Second video at link.

POPS Scholars Make Finds In Search Of Nazi Archive The 50 million pages stored in this central German spa town since the mid-1950s previously had been used by Red Cross staff to respond to inquiries about missing persons or the fate of family members, and later to document compensation claims. The gray metal shelves and cabinets contain 16 miles (25 kilometers) of transport lists, camp registries, medical records, forced labor files and death certificates of some 17.5 million people subjected to Nazi persecutions. Taken together with written and oral testimonies and the transcripts of war crimes trials, the dry data at Bad Arolsen add texture to the known picture of the Holocaust, from the first concentration camps created within weeks of Hitler's rise to power in January 1933 to the defeat of Nazism in May 1945. "It was much more than I expected," said Trouve. investigative researcher Randy Herschaft contributed to this article from Bad Arolsen
