POPSIt Depends I'm all for protecting children from pedophiles. Though it must be remembered that "the church" doesn't have a very good record on this account. And what about the 18 year old who has consensual sex with his 16 year old girlfriend and is then arrested and branded a sex offender? I'll admit that I've not read the law the clip refers to but it appears on the surface to be ill thought out and lacking in many respects. At most, it's a piecemeal stab to address a complicated issue.

POPSDept. of Defense Releases new War Strategy Manual Anyway, I learned today that more than 250,000 people have downloaded the manual in three weeks. Those are New York Times bestselling numbers. And it says something about how much people are looking at this manual. Some authors toil for years for such numbers. So the military is considering publishing the manual and selling it in bookstores, just as it did for 3-0. If you want to check it out, See above link and scroll down to last sentence.

POPSGood bye Gene, Hello Dene “What makes DNA a living molecule is the dynamics of it, and a dynamic vocabulary would be helpful,” she said. “I talk about trying to verb biology.” And to renoun it as well. Writing last year in the journal PloS One, Dr. Keller and David Harel of the Weizmann Institute of Science suggested as an alternative to gene the word dene, which they said could be used to connote any DNA sequence that plays a role in the cell. So far, Dr. Keller admits, it has yet to catch on.

POPSBut maybe we're learning... It seems like a group of people still long to be led by the ignorant... but those amongst us who don't know what they don't know: the scariest of all. The world is a complicated place... we face real problems that aren't solved by chanting "free market" ... but some still cling to the belief that intellectualism is the real problem.

POPSOn Proposition 8: Something to consider For years, the California Christian right apparatus, long hampered by their nativism and racism, had been unable to make inroads into the state's brown, yellow and black population - a demographic goldmine in a state that is more than 50 percent minority and growing. Prop 8 may prove their goldrush. From the very beginning they bought up ad space in Chinese, black, Spanish, and Korean media; they hosted massive rallies for ethnic Christians. The Sunday before election day, I went to Los Angeles City Hall for the most celebratory, most diverse rally I have ever attended; it was organized by Yes on 8 Chinese advocates. POPSPoll says race won't be big factor in USA vote
7 out of 10 doesn't sound that good but the pollster points out this goes both ways. I think McCain's age is has the greatest prejudice; old people say this as well. This also points out another problem: Media Driven Issues. The media has just been making up one issue after another than is not an issue to nobody else but them: media fabricated issues...and often just to raise hackles or excitement and thus have more people tune in. With race, it's been called: The Bradley Effect. (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bradley_effect ) It basically means white folks will hide their racial prejudice when polled, thus polls will be off. But that was 26 years ago. Times have changed. There is NO Bradley Effect anymore (well...if so, certainly much much less) This is shown -- documented by elections of other Afro-American candidates in the 21st century, like in a race for governor in 2006; polls were fine.
