POPSFarewell to Coney Island's Astroland Coney Island's Astroland, one of the city's historic (and affordable) attractions, was shut down yesterday. It meant different things to different people and this story brings that out well.

POPSExplorers, Daredevils & Record Setters of the 30's The Twenties and Thirties have always been an area of interest to me. The Roaring Twenties, where we drank Bathtub Gin and danced the Charleston. Speakeasies everywhere! (One reporter did an experiment in 25 different US Cities where he timed how long it would take to be able to buy illegal liquor. Shortest time was 21 seconds. Longest was 3 hours and 19 minutes. That must have been a "Dry County.") America was in love with the "new" vogue and any fads it could find. Just a few examples: phone booth stuffing (25 college students at University of Chicago), Marathon Dancing, Flagpole Sitting, Racecar Driving, Monopoly, the :"Talkies," Radio Programs, Coney Island, Daredevil Flying, Long-Distance Swimming, Harry Houdini, Solo Flights, Self-Made Millionaires, the Gangster (especially Al Capone who courted the media), Exploring the Unknown, and Political Radical Causes! History is amazing!

POPSNYPD Harasses a Photographer at Coney Island There is no law against taking pictures in public. You can even take pictures of people and only need a model release if you plan to use the photo for commercial purposes (but not for using as art).

POPSConey Island's Parachute Jump Sees the Light One of my favourite New York landmarks is coming back to life. When I was a kid, I loved going with my family to Coney Island at night, and seeing all the wonderful bright lights, and boardwalk attractions. The Parachute Jump was the king of the park. Just watching those brave people being hoisted up to the very top of the tower and then dropped suddenly used to bring chills up my spine, even though I never was allowed to go on that ride myself. I remember when they first said it was gonna be torn down, but once the city declared it a landmark I was relieved to know it would always be where I remember it in my youth.
