Could Bill Cost Hillary Cabinet Position?
Wisco
by Wisco  Yesterday 12:41 PM
At issue are questions about the Clinton Global Initiative and possible conflicts of interest. " t could prove problematic for Obama if the former president continues to seek donations from foreign countries – at the same time his wife is asking them for diplomatic concessions as Secretary of State," Politico reports. "The Clinton Global initiative, which has raised more than $30 billion since 2005, has solicited major donations from a handful of foreign governments, including a $1 billion pledge from Norway in 2007." "The ball is very much in her court," a source told the website.

Certify Congo Tin?
Elisabeth Eaves
by Elisabeth Eaves  Yesterday 10:59 AM    1
Lydia Polgreen's story on a Congolese mine is a fantastic piece of reporting that deserves to be read in its entirety. Towards the end she raises an interesting question: U.S. politicians have suggested certifying the source of minerals from Congo, in an effort to avoid funding conflicts. I'm not totally sold on such labeling programs -- diamond-certifying schemes have been another popular one. Money being money, won't military groups cut off from one resource just move on to another? Are there strong examples of commodity certification schemes that have actually stopped a conflict? If so I'd love to hear about it.

New program teaches preschoolers reading skills, getting along with others
tabsey
by tabsey  11-14-2008
This is why education is going nowhere in western countries. This program has been running in preschools everywhere since I was first teaching (1971). Someone pushes the wheel round and up comes the same old with a new title. Access for all to the preschools is the first priority, not wasting money doing the bleeding obvious. Just proves the "experts" don't know what is happening with the kids and are only interested in promotion or glory. And, as the average kid begins to read at seven, they will be mighty sick of pre reading skills after three years.

Writers really spoof it up. but wouldn't it cool if this was true?
Packrat61
by Packrat61  11-12-2008
Hundreds of independent writers, artists, and activists are claiming credit for an elaborate project, 6 months in the making, in which 1.2 million copies of a "special edition" of the New York Times were distributed in cities across the U.S. by thousands of volunteers. The papers, dated July 4th of next year, were headlined with long-awaited news: "IRAQ WAR ENDS". The edition, which bears the same look and feel as the real deal, includes stories describing what the future could hold: national health care, the abolition of corporate lobbying, a maximum wage for CEOs, etc. There was also a spoof site, at http://www.nytimes-se.com/.

Headlines from 2020 - Part V
ColoradoRight

 • The Amish are relocated en masse to unelectrified penal colonies in Alaska because they refuse to pledge allegiance to anyone but God; they fail to accept that Obama is God. Unlike other deportations, this one saves the People's State money because the Amish are pacifists. Their formerly productive farmland is redistributed to ACORN staff and people George Soros likes (until he quits liking them; people do not think about what happens after that). Results similar to those in Zimbabwe fail to be reported in the state media. • The Amish are joined by those Rastas too stoned to fight back, although some Rastas merely remain under state suspicion after conceding that, as per Bob Marley, "the Almighty God is a living man" refers not to Haile Selassie but Barry Obama. • The Red Cross becomes the Red Circle (aka the Red 'O') and blood donations become mandatory. Those without recent donations are denied bread rations. . Mandated "volunteer" camps teach youth educational value of

Juan Cole's "The Coming McCain Military Draft"
cptenaud
by cptenaud  11-3-2008    1
McCain will need to institute a draft for young American men (and, given the times, maybe for women as well). McCain, just like the recent Bush Administration's hawkish rhetoric has been proven by the Russian/Georgian conflict to be nothing more than a bluff. Sure, there was a lot of tough talk and fist shaking at the Russians but no real actions were taken against them either by the Bush Administration. I wonder if those young McCain supporters realize what they are asking for? I doubt it. Though many of us already were seeing the writing on the wall, after many started serving in these theaters on second tours, than third, than forth, than for some fifth......................, the Military nor Country can sustain these misadventures let alone protect from the Blowback which will be from the Hatreds we've created!

Doubt in FDA View Of BPA
aklimento
by aklimento  10-28-2008
BPA, first synthesized in 1891, is used to harden plastics, and it appears in everything from baby bottles to sunglasses. Studies suggest BPA may be associated with a variety of problems, including Type-2 diabetes, prostate cancer, genital defects in men, early onset of puberty in women and behavioral problems. There much more around. Triclosan in fluid soaps, shampoos and toothpaste, 90% positive tests for pesticides in random urine tests, transfat oils... Looks like weapons of mass destruction.:(

Depressed astronauts might get computerized solace (AP)

I couldn't help thinking how that the first paragraph is almost the same as that for a soldier. There are a lot more reasons for a soldier to become depressed though. And a lot less effort being made to help them, unless you consider a handful of a drug cocktail treatment.

Pillar of Unbelief - Marx
Efrain Alvarado
by Efrain Alvarado  10-26-2008    1
Monism: the idea that everything is one and that common sense's distinction between matter and spirit is illusory. Pantheism: the notion that the distinction between Creator and creature, the distinctively Jewish idea, is false. For Hegel, the world is made into an aspect of God (Hegel was a pantheist); for Marx, God is reduced to the world (Marx was an atheist). Historicism: the idea that everything changes, even truth; that there is nothing above history to judge it; and that therefore what is true in one era becomes false in another, or vice versa. Dialectic: the idea that history moves only by conflicts between opposing forces, a "thesis" vs. an "antithesis" evolving a "higher synthesis." Necessitarianism, or fatalism: the idea that the dialectic and its outcome are inevitable and necessary, not free. Statism: the idea that since there is no eternal, trans-historical truth or law, the state is supreme and uncriticizable. Militarism: (read article)

U.S. Forces Attack Inside Syria for First Time
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-26-2008
This article, from the UK, supported this attack. Maybe this makes good grounds for discussion. One thing, right away, jumped out at me was the last sentence in the clip here saying one reason for this was to break Syria away from Iran and encourage Syria into peace talks with Israel. #1: All decades of so-called 'peace talks,' involving Israel are false, a charade. They say peace, they expand their settlements (the main Arab gripe). Again, they say peace, they expand their settlements, etc., etc., etc. #2: Maybe this was OK? Maybe not? Maybe there was another way to handle it? #3: Very interesting how from the very first English colony in the so-called New World, the English had conflicts with Native Americans. The first tribe they wiped out was not the direct enemy, but a tribe they accused of 'not doing enough to stop this enemy." Same we say about Iran now. Same we say about Syria.Pakistan. What? We want them to fight our wars we start in their backyard? Or a

Advice From Warren.Buffet-NYTimes OpEd
davboz
by davboz   10-18-2008    1
Over the long term, the stock market news will be good. In the 20th century, the United States endured two world wars and other traumatic and expensive military conflicts; the Depression; a dozen or so recessions and financial panics; oil shocks; a flu epidemic; and the resignation of a disgraced president. Yet the Dow rose from 66 to 11,497. Today people who hold cash equivalents feel comfortable. They shouldn’t. They have opted for a terrible long-term asset, one that pays virtually nothing and is certain to depreciate in value.

October Surprises In History
merrie
by merrie  10-13-2008    1
During October 1962, the United States and the Soviet Union came to the brink of war over nuclear-armed missiles that Nikita Khrushchev had shipped to Cuba. Those who believe that this month's collapse of global financial markets is an unprecedented disaster need to study history. In 1987, Oct. 19 became known as "Black Monday," as Wall Street investors watched the market nose-dive 22 percent and lose $500 billion in value in a single trading session -- still the biggest one-day loss of value in history. The 23rd of this month is the 25th anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Marine headquarters in Beirut, Lebanon -- a radical Islamic suicide attack that killed 241 Americans. Fifteen years ago this month, there was a 19-hour gunfight in Mogadishu, Somalia, which claimed the lives of 18 U.S. Army Rangers and Delta Force personnel.

Alaska Inquiry Concludes Palin Abused Powers
glennbah
by glennbah  10-10-2008
The report was released after Alaska lawmakers emerged from a private session in Anchorage where they spent in excess of six hours discussing whether to release the ethics report into the politically charged scandal. Mr. Branchflower based his finding of abuse of power on Alaska’s Executive Branch Ethics Act, which was established to “discourage executive branch employees from acting upon personal interest in the performance of their public responsibilities and to avoid conflicts of interest in the performance of duty,” the report says.
