POPS Not So Green Voters Nix Most Environmental State Ballot Measures Coloradans voted for environmentally-friendly Senate candidate Mark Udall. Yet they struck down a ballot measure that would have increased taxes on the oil and gas industries to pay for more goodies such as environmental conservation and clean energy. Opponents of the measure took it as a harbinger of higher energy taxes. Only in Missouri did a green-energy ballot initiative have any success. Proposition C set out to gradually increase the use of renewable energy to 15% by 2021, mandating slow-but-steady yearly increases. That’s the kind of measure that power companies and electricity grid operators like, because it gives them time to absorb the new power into the system without disruptions. Alone among the five environmental ballot initiatives, Proposition C had almost no opposition.

POPSEarth on course for eco 'crunch' This problem is being pushed to the side by economic problems by governments. Spend the way out of trouble building jobs in a more environmentally friendly framework. Provide the retraining needed desperately by those thrown out of work, and give it sensibly.

POPSBut She Attends a Church Where They Speak in Tongues She vowed to go all the way to the Supreme Court if necessary. “Without question, litigation challenging the Secretary's decision will be of immense significance to Alaska and the nation,” she said. “I would not be at all surprised if the case is ultimately decided by the U.S. Supreme Court. As governor, I believe that my responsibility requires full State participation beginning at the trial court and ending with the last appeal.” On Fox News, in an interview with Neil Cavuto she explained her reasoning. “We don`t believe that this speculation, again unprecedented, on computer modeling could forecast the effects of climate change, to the degree that leaves us in a comfortable position,” she said. “It’s just too far out into the future, this speculative modeling.”

POPSEverything Dolphin The Endangered Species Act requires the US federal government to identify species threatened with extinction, identify habitat they need to survive, and help protect both. In doing so, the Act works to ensure the basic health of our natural ecosystems and protect the legacy of conservation we leave to our children and grandchildren.

POPSEPA Refuses to Cut Ethanol Requirements "Response to the decision fell along predictable lines: The Environmental Working Group's director of government affairs, Sandra Schubert, called the mandate "misguided" and said it was "forcing farmers to plow up marginal land and wildlife habitat while increasing global warming and dumping toxic fertilizers and pesticides into our precious water sources." "America should be focusing on viable clean energy solutions like conservation, solar and wind," she said. The president of the Biotechnology Industry Organization, Jim Greenwood, said the decision sent "a strong message that we must continue moving forward toward sustainable production of advanced biofuels" to cut dependence on important oil and to increase biofuel production from non-food sources. His organization represents biotech companies, among others involved in expanding the use of biofuels.""

POPSAerial surveys 'underestimate' ferals Feral animals such as cats ,foxes, pigs, and goats, can cause an incredible amount of damage to natural species and an environment that has not evolved defenses against them. Feral pigs can root up the ground, eat ground-nesting animal and endangered plants, and foul water. They need the numbers so they can find out how many animals are causing a problem, so they can decide how many need to be culled to reduce it.

POPSThe IWC Fails to protect whales.
Under Japan's special permit whaling programs, in 2007, a total of 551 Antarctic minke whales were taken under the JARPA II program, while 207 common minke, 100 sei, 50 Bryde's and three sperm whales were taken under the JARPN II program in the North Pacific. The issue of special permit whaling deeply divides the Commission and as in previous years, strong statements both in favor and against lethal research programs were made. The Japanese delegation said it is "strongly convinced" that the current situation is undesirable for all members and that the IWC must be normalized. "Japan commends and appreciates the tremendous efforts Chair-Hogarth has put in over the past year in order to once again make the IWC an effective organization that can fulfill its own mission, the conservation and management of whale resources," Japan said in a statement. Japan is of the view that "due to serious disagreements among different groups within the IWC, there has been a paucity of constru

POPSIt's So Simple But People Won't Do It People talk a lot about wanting to save energy, lower oil/gas prices, and be more environmentally friendly, but most of it is just that - talk. People want to appear like they want to make a difference because it's become socially unacceptable to appear not to care. But when it comes to taking action, if it impacts people's current lifestyle in any way - even the smallest bit - most people won't do it. Consider driving 60-65 MPH on the freeway instead of 75-80, and going slower on the accelerator. If everyone did this, the savings would be HUGE - but of course people feel they have to get where they're going 30 seconds sooner and need to show of the power of their engines, so they won't do it.

POPS Governor Of Alaska Challenges Polar Bear Listing "Inappropriate implementation of this listing decision could result in widespread social and economic impacts, including increased power costs and further increases in fuel prices, without providing any more protection for the species," he said. Deborah Williams, a former Interior Department special assistant for Alaska and an advocate in the state for global warming response, said Palin's lawsuit was not a prudent use of state money. "Clearly Secretary Kempthorne put a tremendous amount of thought into the listing decision and concluded correctly that listing was required," she said.

POPSThe Story Behind the Killings Of Congo's Rare Mountain Gorillas
The Congolese park authorities moved Ngobobo to the park's less important northern sector, away from the vulnerable gorilla population and the conservation groups who backed his enforcement efforts. He took the transfer—presented to as temporary—with equanimity. "What I have done was really upset the system," says Ngobobo, who has the demeanor of an academic and speaks impeccable French. "And for that, they have put my head on a tray." Ngobobo bemoans what he says is the corruption that influences some local officials, military authorities and conservation officials. "The charcoal industry is a whole mafia." 550 park rangers are paid about $5 a month Rwandan authorities see the value in protecting the gorillas, a draw for the growing numbers of tourists who pay $500 each to see the rare mammals in their habitat. Virunga's top ranger in charge of tourism hasn't seen a single tourist since August. "The first thing we need to do is stop the fighting." [and find another source..

POPSSea Shepherd On the Way! The position of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is that we will provide information as we get it to the world at large, to other groups and to the government of Australia. "The least we can do in the Cooperation Sea, is to do our best to cooperate with everyone," said Captain Watson. "After all, this is about saving whales from illegal whaling activities. We encourage Greenpeace to be aggressive and wish them well with their opening act in this high seas drama. Sea Shepherd is preparing for the Grand finale
