POPSTo Follow God's Will? I think all this nonsense really hurts the message of a religious revolutionary who brought transformation and wisdom, not doctrine. There is a wise way and a foolish way; a broad way and a narrow one. Do people really think that one can "pray away gay?" It's so convenient to believe if one's orientation is heterosexual I suppose. Oh well, back to the every day business of the dead burying their own dead.

POPSThanks Barry He understood the implications of Obama's passing over Hillary--not that Clinton voters would vote for McCain-Palin (though if even a few do so, it could make a difference), but that his pick of Palin when compared with Obama's shying away from Hillary would show McCain as a bolder and more confident leader. And he had the sense that Palin's anti-establishment conservatism, pro-family feminism, and tough-minded reformism would add something important to his campaign.

POPSPalin the polarizer And this comment from a Republican no less. I think he's right. This time there are more D than R's.

POPSRepublican Corruption In one paragraph a Republican speech writer calls the Congresses of 1994 to 2006 "ethically challenged" and follows with the "Republican Corruption" in the next sentence. Hmmmm.....

POPSMovement Conservatism: The G.O.P. - Selling Social Policy as a Commodity indifference to learning from experience and adjusting accordingly is a central characteristic of movement conservatism. Examples: Resistance to forming a 9/11 commission (Bush administration) Resistance to learning what went wrong during Hurricane Katrina ( John McCain); The term Flip-Flopping, (one can never form a new opinion or idea based upon new experience or information;

POPSMcCain, Palin and New Orleans McCain's going to New Orleans: pure Machiavellianism. Listen to the Palin video. Go to youtube if there is no sound. She is an effective propagandist for oil in the way she minimizes Anwar. The majority of the American people want to drill. History show that the majority is often wrong.

POPSWhat Choosing Sarah Palin Really Means by DavidAnderson When she was being vetted, Palin made an interesting statement which is being taken out of context now. She said that she would not leave her job as Governor unless she was assured the VP role would make a difference in its day to day operation. In other words, she understands historically that the VP can be a very important role in an administration or a one not much more influential than Miss America. She was not interested in being McCain’s token. She wanted to contribute. That tells you volumes about the Governor. She represents a turn in the party from poking fun at the vision thing to some one who believes government should represent the hockey moms, fishermen, teachers, and small business people in its policies again. The Republican Party chose to give more than lip service to majority of the people.

POPSToo Far Right! Your father raped you? Too bad. Global warming an issue? Poppycock. Teach creationism in science class? Sure, let the students decide. Ultra right wing religious fanatics are salivating all over themselves over McSame's choice. A Hillary replacement? Ha! Going to draw Hillary supporters away from Obama? In a pig's eye. Republicans must believe that women voters are all stupid idiots. This is McCain's judgment in action!

POPSMrs. Conservative So what we will see in the next days and weeks--what we have already seen in the hours after her nomination--is an effort by all the powers of the old liberalism, both in the Democratic party and the mainstream media, to exorcise this spectre. They will ridicule her and patronize her. They will distort her words and caricature her biography. They will appeal, sometimes explicitly, to anti-small town and anti-religious prejudice. All of this will be in the cause of trying to prevent the American people from arriving at their own judgment of Sarah Palin.

POPSThe Editors of National Review on the Pick We hope that the choice of Palin also signals a decisive turn toward a campaign theme of fighting for the middle class. McCain and Palin can and should say that they will fight to protect Americans from our foreign enemies, to stop liberal excesses, and to reform dysfunctional institutions. They should not accept the portrait of middle-class Americans as hapless victims that so many of the Democratic speakers this week portrayed; but they need to show that they share middle-class frustrations. Strength in foreign policy; reforms of taxes and health care geared to the middle class; and a moderate social conservatism: It’s a potentially winning message, and now Republicans have a ticket that is suited to it.

POPSOn True Conservatism ( equal time) It might also be stated that bad government includes almost all government outside the parameters of what is constitutionally mandated and that society is made "better" by individuals acting in accordance with a moral grounding to better their communities, states, and nation. To say that government is the problem is anarchist. To say that government is not our friend is libertarian. To say government is the answer is to be a Progressive fascist.

POPSThe True Conservative True conservatives cherish the government our founders created, and want to make it better, not destroy it.

POPSOn Wickedness Conservatives wickedly play to unreason because being unreasonable is part of what human beings are. Indeed, it is part of the pleasure of being human. The recognition of this is part of what makes conservatism conservative. And it's not going away. I'm reading what I wrote above, and still haven't got to the bottom of what I want to convey. So expect more soon. Trust that I am not offering a counsel of despair. Here, in fact, is a fine piece of writing that gets at why, to tide you over until I figure out a better way to explain that the human reality of unreason does not ever have to be an alibi for progressive defeat, and has, indeed, underwritten many of progressivism's most famous victories.

POPSThe Wrecking Crew: Why bad government is not an accident "You don’t want talented folks in government, because then government will work, it will be effective. And if government is effective, then people will start to expect it to solve their problems ... and who knows what comes after that ...? It’s all downhill from there, from his perspective. And the funny thing was—then you start... researching the history of conservatism—people say things like this all the time, that we don’t want the best and the brightest in government"

POPSWhy I am a Catholic Democrat The greatest benefit to true conservatism in the US would be a strong and intellectually honest liberal movement. Folks speak of conservatives and liberals, but the decades since Reagan have been dominated by party politics, not by ideology. The battle has merely been over which party controls the spoils. The GOP is as bereft of conservative conviction as is the Dems of liberal sincerity. The best thing that could happen to this nation would be for a Goldwater or Reagan to be pitted against a JFK or FDR. Only through such a clash and resolution would the nation once again gain her focus.

POPSMcCain VP Talk Turns To 2 Female Conservatives "She's got it all, and is a remarkable leader who brings a number of good qualities to the table," said Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America. Mrs. Palin is "a mother of five, is a genuine Alaskan, is a hunter, is a dog sledder, is very much for drilling for oil, has a great reform reputation, took on big oil on behalf of the people of Alaska," Mr. Gingrich said. "I think she would bring a level of excitement and uniqueness that people would have to stop and say, 'Boy, this is kind of intriguing.'"

POPSRecord Deficit Expected for 2009 The fruit of "conservatism" is record deficits, inadequate revenues and runaway spending. It did under Reagan and now under Bush. Now it's setting a new record.

POPSDownsizing Government to Death Keystone cops was modelled on groups like this. The govt denies the personel to carry out the checks properly. They can't even find what the problem is. They can't be expected to succeed without a huge amount of luck. Who will be poisoned next? Should be a Republican convention so they get to taste the results of spending all the money on invasions

POPSBush's Racist Police Buddies Taser Black Actor in 'W'. Stone's film on the life of the US president has aroused fascination and anticipation among many, and Bush supporters are bracing for an unflattering portrayal of the president. Previous Stone biopics on Richard Nixon and John F Kennedy were the targets of critical praise as well as controversy. Shreveport remains a bastion of American conservatism, raising questions about whether politics fuelled the aggression during the arrest of Brolin and Wright. Shreveport police chief Henry Whitehorn has confirmed that police are reviewing audio and video of the incident and will submit the case to the city prosecutor's office for possible prosecution of the actors.

POPSReaganomics A suburb of Atlanta and a bastion of Conservatism discovers cognitive economic dissonance. They want government services but don't want to pay for them. Sound familiar? It's the drum beat from the Right that we hear every election season. Cut taxes (especially for the wealthy) and do away with government services. It seems the residents of this small town are finding out, albeit somewhat late, that "trickle down" is a myth and doesn't work. Wake up Republicans!

POPSBoth sides of your mouth... Conservatives are experts at speaking out of both sides of their mouths... The latest case in point: They seem outraged at Gen W. Clark's comments about McCain's experience... but I bet many of these folks were the same people that wore "purple band-aids" at the 2004 Republican convention denoting their "contempt" for 2x purple heart winner John Kerry and his Vietnam war record. I guess you only have to respect the service of conservatives.

POPS From “Green Conservatism” To Black Gold In his book, sounding like Al Gore, Gingrich maintains that “global climate change” is one of several “worldwide challenges.” Unlike Gore, he seems to reject any involvement by “international bureaucrats” in such a scheme. So-called “green conservatism” also surfaced in former Bush speechwriter David Frum’s book. Incredibly, however, Frum advocates a carbon tax as a winning conservative idea. This kind of doubletalk helps explain why the Republican Party is in disarray. Rather than advocate the production of more energy of all kinds, they have an incoherent message that looks insincere and hypocritical because they want to appear to be as “green” as the Democrats, It’s good that Gingrich now seems to have jettisoned this approach. “Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less” He should go further and recall copies of his books. We need an American Vaclav Klaus to lead the way back to freedom.

POPSBAD COW Desease or Lack of Regulation Those who think, that the food industry will and can regulate themselves are misleading the world. Proof is in your meals. Food and Health are of the people, for the people, not unfettered greed in food industries and their cronies.

POPSSaudi Arabia "Sleeping Giant" Tourist Destination I clipped a story yesterday about efforts to turn Haiti into a tourist destination. This story is about what's happening in Saudi Arabia. The situations are completely different in both countries, but what's interesting about Saudi Arabia is how they will attract Western tourists while communicating clearly about expectations, particularly where cultural customs are concerned. Would you go to Saudi Arabia?

POPSBob Barr Plans To Enter Presidential Contest As Libertarian and says federal authorities have seized powers not granted by the constitution, and believes US forces should be brought home from Iraq. The Libertarian Party stands for non-interference by the US government in the personal and business lives of Americans, and advocates lower taxes, a smaller government and more individual freedom. The 59-year-old said he was not concerned about the prospect of damaging McCain, possibly among conservative voters whom the Republican candidate has had trouble courting. Independent and third parties have faced a tough task in modern US election history of breaking the dominance of the Democratic and Republican parties, though several candidates have played a spoiler role. Many Democrats still blame consumer advocate Ralph Nader, who has already announced a 2008 run, for depressing former vice president Al Gore's vote in 2000, and helping George W. Bush to capture the presidency.

POPSWhat's Wrong with Republicans? To the degree McCain can articulate the above, he will win; to the degree that he either cannot or believes the latest gurus that he must abandon them, he will lose. Moving toward a lite version of the Obamian/European "bipartisan"and socialist view of government and calling it a new conservatism is a prescription for utter disaster. No one can out-Obama Obama.
