POPSOn the very real possibility of transformational change The most provocative and optimistic article I've read in a long while - points to emergence as a reason to believe in the possibility of a genuine societal transformation. Clip doesn't do it justice - if you're interested in change, go read it. Probes world outcomes, in light of current crises, by thinking on how human systems transform: "Fundamental transformation is not only possible, it is the routine way natural systems evolve. Radical change is as common as grass in world history, because it is as common as grass in the life of all living systems. But here’s the critical point: What unlocks social transformation is a shift in values, because values are at the core of a self-organizing human system"

POPSThe Absence of Inflation I know this seems counter to what folks are feeling. It seems as prices are always going up. Note the remarks by Barry Ritholtz in the comment section. Inflation measures a broad basket of goods, not just a handful of things that on our lists of "Top Ten Irks." If the cost of something is up, consumers often substitute something else. If apples are pricey, they buy bananas. If oranges are expensive, they try the grape juice. If gasoline is up, they rideshare, use mass transit, telecommute, drive less, and hybrid purchases increase. Interest rates are up because of the *fear* of inflation, rather than inflation itself. We're just not seeing the overall increase in the sum total of goods in that CPI market basket. IMHO, anyways.

POPSWhy Iran feels threatened and defiant...some insights Here's the last bit from this insightful, witty poster Prinzowhales: "It is important to note, as the SCOTSMAN article of a few days before reported...there is economic disatisfaction in Iran. If there were not the necessity of increasing the conspicuous consumption of military spending in the face of the American threat, more effort could go towards bettering the lives of the working class in Iran. This is in line with Amadenijad's inclinations. This would be anathema to the "Merchants of Death" in the New World Order camp."

POPSFear and Money in Dubai One of the most accurate articles I've read yet. Blunt, to the point and most of all, true. It's a fairly lengthy article but gives the reader a more in-depth insight on what's underneath the surface of the iceberg that is Dubai.
