POPSVanity Fair Cover Satirizes John McCain "We had our own presidential campaign cover in the works, which explored a different facet of the Politics of Fear, but we shelved it when The New Yorker's became the "It Girl" of the blogosphere," Vanity Fair writes. "Now, however, in a selfless act of solidarity with our downstairs neighbors here at the Condé Nast building, we'd like to share it with you. Confidentially, of course."

POPSRon Paul's GOP Counter-Convention Continues to get his revolutionary message out that the GOP is way off the mark in regard to their own traditional republican principles of limited government and individual liberty which the neoconservatives have trampled entirely. The popularity of the message cannot be overlooked and demonstrates the latent great dissatisfaction with the presumptive party nominees of McCain and Obama (who is continuing the talk of the "war on terrorism" as if it is a legitimate and constitutional war--see comments on Afghanistan). This might be the year of the greatest number of alternative candidates on the Presidential ticket: Constitution Party, Libertarian Party, Green Party, will probably be on every state ballot.

POPSBanned(in US) WW1Socialist anti-draft pamphlet This is a portion of an anti-draft pamphlet that was put out by the Socail Democratic (Socialist) Party during World War 1. This led to a Supreme Court ruling (US vs Schenk) http://www.law.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/conlaw/schenk.html While we do not have a draft now, I find the portions clipped to be quite relevant to today.

POPS"My First-Hand Experience with Gov't Spies" America's new government, including the states, in action: Thanks to the Freedom of Information Act and the ACLU, we now know that "Lucy" was only one part of a vast, insidious project. The Maryland State Police's Department of Homeland Security devoted near 300 hours and thousands of taxpayer dollars from 2005 and 2006 to harassing people whose only crime was dissenting on the question of the war in Iraq and Maryland's use of death row.

POPSReckless rhetoric or freedom of speech? South Africa has a democratic constitution that protects freedom of speech. In saying things like this is Bishop Tutu trying to place an unconstitutional limitation on freedom of speech?

POPSObama proposes bankruptcy changes Plus, he added, the mortgage and credit crisis facing the country has seen that "pain trickles up," hurting companies and individuals to reaped the rewards of a questionable decade of banking. "Our economy has gotten out of balance," he said. "The American people don't resent wealth, they want to be rich. America has historically rewarded innovation and accomplishment and free enterprise, and I want to ensure we continue to do that."

POPSThis Day in History - July 19 July 19, 2000 A federal administrative law judge ordered white supremacist Ryan Wilson to pay $1.1 million in damages to fair housing advocate Bonnie Jouhari and her daughter, Dani. The decision stemmed from threats made against Jouhari by Wilson and his Philadelphia neo-Nazi group, ALPA HQ.

POPSMajority Oppose CA. Gay Marriage Ban The report calls this a "slight majority" and, in the strictest sense, it is. But do the math -- if the antis pick up all the undecideds, they still lose. This doesn't strike me as the sort of issue people would be squishy on -- if you've made up your mind, I don't see it changing. The antis are going to have to convert some of the pros and that's a tough order. Still, November's a long way off. You never know.

POPSGore: US Must Have Carbon-Free Energy by 2018 Good thinking. To my mind, the most common consumer-side energy source in the future will probably be the battery. What we need is clean energy to charge them. This is also a step toward getting off coal. Everyone accepts that we've got to get off oil, but coal burning remains an unmentioned problem.

POPSCalls for Boycott of San Diego Hotelier It seems to me that Manchester's allowing his "Catholic faith" to turn him into a bad businessman. After all, more marriages = more honeymoons = more money spent at hotels. Besides, his Catholic faith requires a Catholic wedding -- does this mean he'd spend money to outlaw any wedding that wasn't Catholic? In the end, it's just spin to excuse his bigotry.

POPSGore Less Welcome When Gas Costs 4 Bucks Some lawmakers warn that Americans are angry about gas prices and don’t necessarily want to be reminded about the economic sacrifices that may be necessary to reduce the nation’s oil consumption. “People’s anger about a lot of things is crystallized as a result of the gas prices,” said Lautenberg. “The anger is focused by the visibility at the pump.” Lautenberg warned that Americans aren’t eager to hear about the need for more financial sacrifices if there’s not a possible reward in the not-too-distant future. “If it looks like it’s just a continuation of an attack of our economy and family budgets, then its starts getting dispiriting,” he said of innovative yet expensive energy proposals.

POPSAppeals Court Gives Bush Powers of a Dictator Dictators can lock up people, provide them no trial and detain them indefinitely and now so can George Bush. Bush once said it the job of the presidency would be a lot easier if he were a dictator. Locking up people and throwing away the key has now become very easy indeed.

POPSCourt: US Can Jail Civilians Indefinitely First Shitface, his father and Reagan elevate people with the LEAST morals to sit on the courts and now he can simply say "FUCK THE BILL OF RIGHTS, FUCK THE CONSTITUTION, FUCK ANYONE WHO STANDS IN MY WAY." What a rot-gut cesspool the USA has become under the tyranny of Bush and the Zionists. Rev. Wright was right.

POPSFallen on Deaf Ears - Another Impeachment Petition I came across this today while doing some research. I did a quick check to see if my name was on it. Nope, this is yet another petition, or written request for help, that has fallen upon deaf ears. What a shame. I wonder, all sum total, how many Americans were ignored in our numerous petitions and requests for impeachment? What's the grand total of signatures? Is there a way to find out...as, these documents were sent to Congress. Shouldn't we be able to know how many requests went unanswered? This particular petition was signed by 4, 491 American Citizens. Do they mean nothing?

POPSCrosstime Traffic: Alternate history series by Harry Turtledove Pt. 2 of 2 As I said in the notes to Part 1 of this clip, Harry Turtledove is the Master of alternate history science fiction. Some of his other series such as: World War, The Great War, and Day of Infamy should be checked out as well as his anthologies and his first novel, Agent of Byzantium. I first read that is my Senior Year of High School and though I had a love for literature already, I knew my path was set in front of me... But I write horror right? Technically, yes and no... I write alternate history with a horror theme and trappings.. Maybe not a big distinction but it is one on my part. If you want your teenagers to do better in History pick up a few alternate history novels. A writer has to develop the divergence point from "actual" history and the ramifications and butterfly effect of those. In other words, he gives you real history and then takes it and warps it and gives you a new look at it..

POPSThe Real-Life '24' "We are once again distracted and unprepared while the Taliban and bin Laden’s minions multiply in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This, no less than the defiling of the Constitution, is the legacy of an administration that not merely rationalized the immorality of torture but shackled our national security to the absurdity that torture could easily fix the terrorist threat. That’s why the Bush White House’s corruption in the end surpasses Nixon’s. We can no longer take cold comfort in the Watergate maxim that the cover-up was worse than the crime. This time the crime is worse than the cover-up, and the punishment could rain down on us all."
