POPSThe Power of Dignity This article is both pragmatic and powerful. When I read it, in ODE magazine, I retyped it and sent it to people. Now that it's available online, I'm posting it here for your consumption. One of the things I most respect about Arch Bishop Tutu is his ability to see beyond normal constructs and into functional applied solutions. Ideas like "forgiveness" can be too large to embrace and too hard to embody. What if we let such overwhelming constructs go in deference to more concrete steps, like simply listening to the experience of our "enemies". It's almost like a post-modern revision of Stockholm Syndrome -- to set out with the intention of viewing one's "enemy" as an empathetic character within his own context. It doesn't diminish the impact of my enemy's choices on my life, but it can change radically how I live in response to that -- by enriching my perspective and depolarizing our postures. Becoming human to one another is the first and most important step.

POPSFaroe Islands Barbarity abounds on the beautiful islands of Faroe. Can we excuse the bloodthirsty slaughter of these intelligent creatures on the basis that animals in food production also suffer, or that it's part of their culture, as some people do? Of course not! Quite apart from the fact that two wrongs do not make a right, if we justified this barbarity on the grounds of culture we'd also have to accept the practice of child marriage, suttee, clitorendectomies etc. Note too that the meat is not eaten...the animals are left to rot because heavy metal contamination renders their meat useless for human consumption according to EU standards for for human food. Aren't we a wonderful species - NOT!

POPSPurified urine to be astronauts' drinking water I thought there was a problem with purification processes not being able to eliminate hormones. On a lighter side, if they practised a certain form of yoga, they would not have to purify all of it, just keep their own for cortisone.

POPSArtist as Public Servant A successful artwork is one that somehow causes that audience to experience a shift in perception. With this understanding, I was able to modify my orientation from that of an artist creating objects for consumption to that of an artist working as a public servant to create experiences that change people’s ideas of what it means to be a community. agree?/disagree?

POPSThe Psychology of Denial in the Age of Consumerism A four-year analysis of the world's ecosystems sponsored by the Worldwatch Institute found that over-consumption has pushed 15 out of 24 ecosystems essential to human life "beyond their sustainable limits". Our insatiable desire for more is moving the planet toward a state of collapse that may be "abrupt and potentially irreversible".

POPSThe Legacy of Keynes In the Keynesian framework, the largest chunk of spending is on account of consumer outlays. Therefore consumer outlays are regarded as the motor of the economy — consumption sets in motion real economic growth. But is consumption the motor of the economy? We suggest that one must make a distinction between productive and nonproductive consumption. While productive consumption is an agent of economic growth, nonproductive consumption leads to economic impoverishment.
