Bacteria on the Move, Eating Their Fill
Nerfzilla
by Nerfzilla  11-4-2008
Directed bacterial movement that is controlled in this way is known as chemotaxis, and has been observed in individual microbes as well as in colonies that organize into biofilms or other structures. Because M. xanthus uses chemotaxis-like pathways to move over its prey, the researchers call this behavior predataxis. (A video is at nytimes.com/science.) The swarming changed over time. When a lot of E. coli was available, the bacteria moved back and forth tightly; Dr. Kirby likened it to a vacuum cleaner moving repeatedly over a dirty spot. As the prey was consumed, the pattern lengthened and dissipated. Presumably the bacteria needed to release a lot of digestive enzymes at first, but less and less as time went on, he said. Further study of this kind of coordinated behavior may help in understanding certain diseases that involve motile bacteria, Dr. Kirby said, and in developing methods to clean up environmental contaminants using microbes.

Bottled water has contaminants too, researchers say
brightlight4
by brightlight4  10-17-2008
“In some cases, it appears bottled water is no less polluted than tap water and, at 1,900 times the cost, consumers should expect better,” said Jane Houlihan, an environmental engineer who co-authored the study.

paleblue
by paleblue  10-15-2008
This is a fact, faucet water is considered "filtered" water because your local municipality filters it for you, but thats usually done with Chlorine a known cancer causing substance.. Since I sell water filtration systems I always tell people never buy bottled water! Between the time it arrives at your home its been in that bottle way to long never mind the fact of what I just previously mentioned.. Yet they sell that stuff for $1.50 or more to just contaminate you more.. If you wish to see an excellent system which synergy uses a 1micron carbon block filter, UV light and Ozone then visit my site: www.cleanairbiz.com and click on Living Water tab.. NSF Certified!

Love the spokesperson. A contaminant is not a contaminant until it exceeds recommended levels. Does anyone have a lot of faith in a body that has consistently taken aboard test results that were not adequate. Same for the Federal Standards mob.

A Novel Bacterial Species Is Found Trapped In 120,000-year-old Ice
Mohir
by Mohir  6-3-2008
The ultra-small size of the new species could be one explanation for why it was able to survive for so long in the Greenland glacier. Called Chryseobacterium greenlandensis, the species is related genetically to certain bacteria found in fish, marine mud, and the roots of some plants. The organism is one of only about 10 scientifically described new species originating from polar ice and glaciers.

Nanotech in food poses unknown risks
pokkets
by pokkets  3-11-2008
There are barriers between the us and outside world in the skin, between the digestive system and the bloodstream, and organs. The most crucial barrier, is the 'blood - brain' barrier which for example will only let molecules, such as sugars have access to the brain. one of the effects of this is the prevention of larger molecules, and particularly things like germs and viruses entering the brain, which cannot deal with the inflammation that is caused by the immune system fighting an invader. Nanoparticles in food can be of an unspecified size, and so there is the possibility, that they will go places they should not be, and are in fact dangerous. Some of the reasons food companies haven't tested, are that tests are expensive, they don't want to go looking for a problem with their new 'wonder' product in case they find something that is dangerous or that the public doesn't like, or because it didn't occur to them there was a danger. These days that's unlikely and certainly no excuse.

Globalized Contamination
zbeechclip
by zbeechclip  2-28-2008
The article points out that these contaminants are traveling around the world through the atmosphere and coming in for a landing wherever and whenever they fall to Earth via rain or snow. Mountain areas are particularly susceptible because they "catch" the pollutants as they fly by in high altitude winds. We are all interconnected, and yet we have no real institutions that are functioning on these issues in a globally interconnected way. Yet nation states don't seem to be able to protect their inhabitants from this type of agression.

Technical fix for Toxic Stockpile?
pokkets
by pokkets  2-7-2008    1
I read the bottom line "More expensive than incineration" and it was clear the Orica would find faults in the technology. It's a bit late. The chemical in rubble? NO it leeches into the environment. Orica are notorious for their lack of concern regarding pollution. they once just let these wastes out with the sewerage, but there was never a word said. It is only through research, and environmental testing which proved them so callous.Persistent Organic Pollutants, are so named because they are so unnatural there is no mechanism in the natural environment to break them down. Two of the most classic chemicals which are a prime source of the P.O.P. Dioxin, are DDT, a pesticide, and Agent Orange A Herbicide. There is the acronym NIMBY Not in My Back Yard. what is ironic to say the least, is the way the wastes are disposed, they are in EVRYONES Back Yard in their bloodstream, in their food, in their water, They tend to concentrate towards the top of food chains Sharks Whales and People
