"What I find disappointing about most religious beliefs is that they are a kind of statement of contempt for nature and reality. It's absurdly hubristic. It holds the myths of a few thousand years above nature's many billion-yeared journey. It says reality is inferior and less satisfying than the stories we make up."

Ahmadinejad's Message to Obama, "Change" Please
blueridge
by blueridge  11-6-2008    1
Congratulates and calls for "change" toward policy of "non-interference" from one of hostile aggression threatening war with Iran and forbidding nuclear energy development. By "selfish minority" he appears to reference the neoconservatives and Israeli Lobby that have controlled war policy contrary (Iraq, et al) to what most Americans believe is right.

John McCain To The American Worker:”You Can’t Do It My Friend”
lifecyce1898
by lifecyce1898  10-26-2008    4
He boils us all down to a stupid stereotype, personified by someone pretending to be something he's not and bases his campaign on talking down to the American worker. He is part of the American aristocracy with nothing but contempt for the American worker. Don't he fooled by a smile and a pat on the back "my friends" because you'll find a knife in your back as soon as he gets what he wants. Joe the Plumber was make up by John the bullshitter

Old Blighty, the birthplace of English
iskandar
by iskandar  10-5-2008    1
"Collins' editors know that old words die hard — and that some people will vilipend (regard with contempt) any execution without a fair trial. So they've offered the chance of a reprieve. They have made public 24 words that face deletion because editors could find no example of their use in their database of English-language books, newspapers, broadcasts and other media. If, by February 2009, a word reappears in that database with at least six "high quality" citations, it could be spared from the semantic dustbin. "We're looking to see if dropping a little stone in the pond of language actually does generate ripples," says Brookes."

Nationalism vs. Patriotism
darkduskx
by darkduskx  10-4-2008    1
In the light of what has been said we understand how utilitarianism, the doctrine which defines morality not in terms of what is good but of what is advantageous, threatens the freedom of individuals and nations and obstructs the building of a true culture of freedom. Utilitarianism often has devastating political consequences, because it inspires an aggressive nationalism on the basis of which the subjugation, for example, of a smaller or weaker nation is claimed to be a good thing solely because it corresponds to the national interest. No less grave are the results of economic utilitarianism, which drives more powerful countries to manipulate and exploit weaker ones.

Shoe Trees, almost universl..
einbar
by einbar  9-30-2008
"Maybe what’s most interesting about these bits of folklore though isn’t that they exist, however, but that shoe-flinging isn’t limited to the U.S.–even though as best we can tell shoe trees are. In the Middle East, shoe-tossing or striking is a sign of extreme contempt, almost the exact opposite of the North American meaning, and shoefiti, a pair of old sneakers hanging off of power lines, are almost universal".

Down with Republicans!
Maxwell_Smart
by Maxwell_Smart  9-26-2008
The Republican Party is quickly morphing into what every person hates. They get away with this stuff because they can. Watch the 60-minute video for a good overview. We are the only ones that can put pressure on such tactics to stop it from destroying us all. This is just another example that shows why people need to get involved once again in helping America (SELF-government). With the Third Parties combining, now is the time for everyone on the sidelines to start jumping in and helping. Learn more about that here... www.thirdpartyticket.com Spread the word! RFK Jr. on Palin's Big Oil infatuation
papananook
by papananook  9-24-2008    1
Now John McCain has chosen as his running mate Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, a diligent student of Big Oil's crib sheets. She's something of a flat-earther who shares the current administration's contempt for science. Palin has expressed skepticism about evolution (which is like not believing in gravity), putting it on par with "creationism," which posits that the Earth was created 6,000 years ago. She used to insist that human activities have nothing to do with climate change. "I'm not one ... who would attribute it to being man-made," she said in August. After she joined the GOP ticket, she magically reversed herself, to a point. "Man's activities certainly can be contributing to the issue of global warming," she told Charles Gibson two weeks ago. Meanwhile, Alaska is melting before our eyes; entire villages erode as sea ice vanishes, glaciers are disappearing at a frightening clip, and "dancing forests" caused by disappearing permafrost astonish residents and tourists. Palin had to

A White Guy Reflects on White Anti-Intellectualism
zizzy
by zizzy  9-24-2008    5
What else but a deep contempt for education (or book learnin' as we sometimes jokingly refer to it in the South) could explain why Barack Obama's Harvard Law School education can be mocked as elitist and out of touch, while John McCain's bottom-feeder academic record and Sarah Palin's four colleges in six years and degree from the University of Idaho, makes them ready to lead, and more like "normal people?" (And please, don't tell me how it isn't his education that poses the problem, but rather his comments about rural folks clinging to God and guns when times are tight, since a week after he made that comment, Dick Cheney implied that West Virginians were all a bunch of inbreds, and rural whites didn't seem to care, since at least he isn't an uppity black guy).

Compassion from our leaders? Is it too much to ask for?
spirithiker
by spirithiker  9-22-2008
Money diverted from education and healthcare to secure access to energy resources in foreign countries, rising unemployment while corporate executives get richer, a faltering economy turning hard working Americans into homeless (and having their voting tights taken away from them), McCain talks of war with nostalgia while disenfranchising veterans, Palin talks of forcing the young to have offspring they neither want nor can sustain, they both flip flop on important issues and boldly lie in face of the truth that is clearly known by millions. All of these things and more have shown how this administration and the republican party in general place human dignity and suffering a distant second to their pursuit of profit and political power. We deserve someone with the capacity to care for us, someone we can connect with, someone who understands us and puts our basic needs ahead of the ‘party’. Compassion is not too much to ask for in a leader. McCain/Palin and Bush/Cheney clearl

"Dos Caras" Obama Is Stoking Racial Antagonism
merrie

Here's the relevant part of the Spanish-language television commercial Mr. Obama is running in Hispanic communities: "They want us to forget the insults we've put up with . . . the intolerance . . . they made us feel marginalized in this country we love so much." Then the commercial flashes two quotes from me: ". . . stupid and unskilled Mexicans" and "You shut your mouth or you get out!" The first sound bite was extracted from a 1993 humorous monologue poking fun at the arguments against the North American Free Trade Agreement. Here's the context: "If you are unskilled and uneducated, your job is going south. Skilled workers, educated people are going to do fine 'cause those are the kinds of jobs Nafta is going to create. If we are going to start rewarding no skills and stupid people, I'm serious, let the unskilled jobs that take absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to do -- let stupid and unskilled Mexicans do that work."
