What is Blackwater Doing in Alaska?
spirithiker
by spirithiker  11-15-2008
The Blackwater guards are nominally employed by Chenega, an Alaska Native corporation associated with the Alaskan coastal village of Chenega Bay, population 86. Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, architect of the “Bridge to Nowhere” and recently convicted of a seven-felony string of corruption charges, is one of the principal proponents of the anti-missile system and was also instrumental in writing laws which help secure government contracts for Alaska Native Corporations. Chenega gets contracts through the Small Business Administration, rakes off a percentage, then lets giant Blackwater provide the actual services. Since 2000 Chenega has received over $1.1 billion in sole-source or non-compete bids from the Army, Air Force and Department of Homeland Security. It's good to have friends in high places.

A convicted felon can run for office - but can't vote1?
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  10-28-2008    8
Another Republican Congressman convicted for corruption. (While they make up smears about and ACORN, etc. -- they are the ones most often gong to jail). But when I hear that this guy could still run for office I was astounded. The USA has a rule that felons can't vote. So felons can't vote but they can run for office!? Obviously this is absurd. But it made me think and come to a clear opinion about this rule that felons can't vote. This rule that felons can't vote is, indeed, another tactic of voter suppression by the Republicans. All their voter suppression tactics focus on the poor and minorities and, 4sure, that's the majority of our prison population. What a despicable election scam. Not to mention that it would seem much better to try to integrate and interest ex-prisoners back into behaving more properly in society -- and voting is a good citizenship thing to do. Felons can run for office but can't vote? I guess felons running for office is more of a W

Stevens (R-Alaska) Convicted On All Counts
ratilfar
by ratilfar  10-27-2008    3
"Despite being a convicted felon, he is not required to drop out of the race or resign from the Senate. If he wins re-election, he can continue to hold his seat because there is no rule barring felons from serving in Congress. The Senate could vote to expel Stevens on a two-thirds vote. "Put this down: That will never happen _ ever, OK?" Stevens said in the weeks leading up to his trial. "I am not stepping down. I'm going to run through and I'm going to win this election." The arrogance.

"Vincent, an Iraqi-born American citizen with whom Timmons worked most closely, pleaded guilty to federal criminal charges in January 2005 that he had acted as an unregistered agent of Saddam Hussein's regime. Tongsun Park, the second lobbyist who Timmons worked closely with, was convicted by a federal jury in July 2006 on charges that he too violated the Foreign Agent Registration Act." Whose selling America to foreign powers?

Quids Pros and Quos in Healthcare Services

Cont..Another Obama adviser and close friend, Dr. Eric Whitaker, took over the Urban Health Initiative when he was hired at U. of C. in October 2007. Whitaker previously had been director of the Illinois Department of Public Health. Obama has said he recommended Whitaker for the state job, giving his name to Tony Rezko, who helped Gov. Blagojevich assemble his Cabinet. Rezko, a former fund-raiser for Obama and Blagojevich, was convicted in June on federal corruption charges tied to state deals. "I've heard complaints from a handful of constituents, but I've also had calls from people in the health care profession complaining," said Ald. Toni Preckwinkle, whose 4th Ward is just north of the hospital. "The medical professionals who have come to me are accusing the university of dumping patients on its neighboring institutions. ... Whether it's being implemented in the way that's in the best interest of the patient, I can't tell you." Understatement of the Week Award...

Obama's Former Friend
merrie

Is Rezko the chink in King Arthur's armor? Chicago Sun-Times reporters Chris Fusco and Tim Novak asked last week how it was possible for Auchi to get government permission to visit Chicago in 2004 despite his French criminal conviction. Obama aides were quoted as saying Auchi never reached out to the senator, and representatives of both men say neither has any recollection of meeting the other. But the Times of London reported last week that "the two may have had a brief encounter" at the Four Seasons Hotel in Chicago. It is an indistinct part of an indistinct story Hillary Clinton's handlers wish had attracted attention before now.

WP: Slippery PM "dogged by corruption allegations" more charges
righthand
by righthand  9-24-2007    1
"We are sure the investigation will clearly show that the purchase of the apartment by the Olmert family was made honestly, ethically and for an appropriate price," ...The state comptroller, Lindenstrauss, also has accused Olmert of using his influence to steer a government grant to a colleague in 2001, when he was trade minister. He has recommended that AG Mazuz open a criminal investigation in this case, too. Suspicions have also clouded two other real estate deals Olmert transacted in Jerusalem and in a trendy Tel Aviv. Olmert has been dogged by corruption allegations throughout his long political career but has never been convicted. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing. Word of the criminal investigation hits Olmert at a sensitive time. He has been meeting with PA Abbas on renewing full-fledged peace talks. And his popularity, badly eroded by Israel's failed war in Lebanon, had recently surged after a reported Israeli airstrike in Syria. ...WP Note the coincidence
