POPSMerck Cutting Another 6,800 Jobs That brings the total number of positions eliminated between 2005 and 2011 to 17,600. (Four hundred of the positions being cut now are vacant.) Right now, Merck has 56,700 employees, so that will bring the total to 49,900, a 12% reduction. Between 2005 and 2011, that's a 25% reduction. There will be a reduction of senior and mid-level executives of 25% as part of the current reduction.

POPSEPA against limiting rocket fuel ingredient in water (cont.) “This is a widespread contamination problem, and to see the Bush EPA just walk away is shocking,” said Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-California, who chairs the Senate’s environment committee. Lenny Siegel, director of the Center for Public Environmental Oversight in Mountain View, California, added: “This is an unconscionable decision not based upon science or law but on concern that a more stringent standard could cost the government significantly.”

POPSMcCain rated as America's worst senator for children McCain has missed 57 percent of Senate votes this session, being absent or voting “present” for 8 out of 10 children-related votes. McCain voted “yes” to increase the minimum wage (after voting no eight times straight); his only other vote was voting “no” on SCHIP reauthorization on Aug. 2, 2007: McCain’s CDF score has steadily declined over the years. In 2004, he received a 38 percent; in 2005, 22 percent; in 2006, 10 percent.

POPSOffsetting carbon offsets Aren't you pissed off? I have an idea. This would be a company that receives payments to support the usage of fossil fuels to offset the ridiculous carbon offset scams that are fraudulently bilking morons out of their money. Here is how it would work. If your carbon footprint is lower than Al Gore's, then you pay carbon offset offsets to projects that increase the use of fossil fuels for the purpose of increasing your carbon footprint to equal that of Al Gore's. Is this NOT BRILLIANT? And get this, it is not a scam. It is helping to defeat a scam and render the practice of scammers useless.

POPSAssumptions in Polar Bear Populations What we do know about polar bears is that, contrary to media portrayals, they are not fragile "canary in the coal mine" animals, but are robust creatures that have survived past periods of extensive deglaciation. Polar bear fossils have been dated to over one hundred thousand years, which means that polar bears have already survived an interglacial period when temperatures were considerably warmer than they are at present and when, quite probably, levels of summertime Arctic sea ice were correspondingly low.

POPSWorld's New Crisis: Soaring Food Prices
"Frankly speaking, that G8 meeting is in June and we cannot wait," Mr Zoellick said, after meeting the IMF and the World Bank's Development Committee. "We estimate that a doubling of food prices over the last three years could potentially push 100 million people in low-income countries deeper into poverty." The World Bank has warned that food prices will remain elevated this year and will probably stay above 2004 levels until 2015. "We estimate that the effect of this food crisis on poverty reduction worldwide is in the order of seven lost years," Mr Zoellick said. He said that almost half of $500 million that the World Food Program recently requested in additional pledges for food aid had been committed, but the May 1 deadline for raising the money would not be met. The parliamentary secretary for international development assistance, Bob McMullan, said yesterday Australia was one of the largest donors through the World Food Program, giving $61.7 million last year.

POPSSTOP SECRET $15 BILLION ANTI-ENERGY BILL FROM PASSING The Senate and House have passed separate bills on energy filled with government mandates and taxes that threaten to send us back to the disastrous Jimmy Carter era of energy shortages and gas lines. Now the Liberal leaders of Congress want to meet in secret to devise one bill that is sure to take the worst sections of each and ram it through Congress without debate. October 24th article, Holman Jenkins of the Wall Street Journal pointed out that there's a glut of ethanol resulting in falling prices while the cost of production skyrockets. He points out that even $90 per barrel oil has not resulted in ethanol success without massive subsidies. Government intervention like this always produces special interest winners while the taxpayer foots the bill. POPS McCain’s Costly Tax On Energy What do John McCain, Environmental Defense, the Natural Resources Defense Council, and the Pew Center on Climate Change have in common? They have united to support a massive new tax increase on energy The real surprise is that in a Republican primary in which Senator McCain’s anti-tax credentials are in question, none of his opponents have even mentioned his advocacy of this new broad-based energy tax. I will leave it to political pundits to speculate on the reasons why. But if it is thought that the climate change benefits will be worth these significant new costs on consumers and producers — think again. Over the next 100 years, the CO2 reductions from the tax will result in a temperature change that even its proponents concede, is so small as to be virtually undetectable by current technologies.
