Obama’s Pentagon-in-Waiting ~ Center for a New American Security
merrie
by merrie  11-9-2008    5
“If they had, the saying in Washington is those who know, don’t say, and those who say, don’t know. I don’t fit in that category.” CNAS fellows and leaders declined to comment for this article. “We bring people together,” Floyd said, “not for a lowest-common-denominator bipartisanship, but for pragmatic solutions for problems we face.” CNAS papers are often vetted through an informal peer-review process, with experts at liberal, centrist and conservative think tanks. Still, some progressives have said that CNAS occasionally substitutes received wisdom for rigor. “I think CNAS’s work on Iraq, in particular, has been unduly tied to the conventional wisdom,” said Matthew Yglesias, a leading liberal blogger. Floyd contended that CNAS’s Iraq position has become the Washington consensus position. We were able to describe a responsible withdrawal,” he said, “and, in essence, the discussion is how to do that. It’s not if it will be done.”

Russia Makes Strategic Counter-Move: "Check"
blueridge
by blueridge  11-5-2008    2
In response to the Bush/neocon/NATO missile deployment in the region. Obviously this sets the game, and pattern, to see what a President Obama will do. From Obama's debates with McCain we see no evidence of "change" or even acknowledgment of the truth of the Georgia-Russia-S. Ossetia conflict (i.e. Georgia attacked and invaded S. Ossetia first).

Voter Intimidation In Philadelphia: Law Enforcement Intervenes
merrie
by merrie  11-4-2008    1
Evil Republicans want to intimidate poor people by requiring some kind of polling place ID verification, under the cynical guise of attempting to curb the coordinated voter fraud we now know to be occurring across the country. If only they knew that a much more effective method of intimidation is to have armed supremacists simply block the entrance to the polling place. ”We will not allow some racists and other angry whites, who are upset over an impending Barack Obama presidential victory, to intimidate blacks at the polls,” said. “Most certainly, we cannot allow these racist forces to slaughter our babies or commit other acts of violence against the black population, nor our black president.”

When is a human a human?
Oortcloud
by Oortcloud  11-4-2008    11
"Try this thought experiment: you’re walking down the street, and you see a building on fire. You enter it to help anyone out, and see it’s a lab. On one side is a five-year-old boy, and the other is a petri dish clearly labeled as having a dozen fertilized eggs in it. You only have time to rescue the boy or the eggs. What do you do? I would argue that it would be, ironically, an inhuman act to rescue the dish. Yet, according to the law if Prop 48 passes, you would have just chosen to let 12 human beings die to save one."

David Duke's Take on the Presidential Election
iulawboy
by iulawboy  11-1-2008
This is from an NPR interview. Duke believes that McCain is a traitor to his race. I'm glad NPR conducted this interview. If we pretend that thinking like Duke's doesn't exist then we let it fester. When we expose these beliefs to the light of day we can start to counter them, to hold them up to scrutiny and attack them head on. Racial bias has been recently shown to exist. When people perceive an applicant to be black (from their resume) they perceive their qualifications as less than they do when the same candidate is perceived to be white. Affirmative action works to correct this very real problem.

Atheists combat religion on buses
AiNeko III
by AiNeko III  11-1-2008
"Religion is accustomed to getting a free ride - automatic tax breaks, unearned 'respect' and the right not to be 'offended', the right to brainwash children," Professor Dawkins said. "Even on the buses, nobody thinks twice when they see a religious slogan plastered across the side. This campaign to put alternative slogans on London buses will make people think - and thinking is anathema to religion." His outspoken comments are backed by BHA chief executive Hanne Stinson, who said the advert would be welcomed as a "breath of fresh air" by many. "If it raises a smile as well as making people think, so much the better."
