POPSMAKING IT: How Chicago Shaped Obama. There was also a more general belief that, after Obama won the 2004 United States Senate primary, he ignored his South Side base. Preckwinkle said, “My view is you have to bring your constituency along with you. Granted, you have to make some tough decisions. Granted, sometimes you have to make decisions that people won’t understand or like. But it’s your obligation to explain yourself and try to do your supporters the courtesy of treating them with respect.” Ivory Mitchell, who for twenty years has been the chairman of the local ward organization in Obama’s neighborhood—considered the most important Democratic organization on the South Side—was one of Obama’s earliest backers. Today, he says, “All the work we did to help him get where he finally ended up, he didn’t seem too appreciative.” A year ago, Mitchell became a delegate for Hillary Clinton. http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/07/21/080721fa_fact_lizza?printable=true

POPSIran: The Revolution of the Kepis An interesting read. The reformers are the big losers. Most critically for Supreme Guide Ali Khamenei, this Friday's election should allow him to complete the transfer of power from the mullahs to the Pasdaran.

POPSLook who's combing through the DC Madam's phone records Why, it's a "Multi-partisan activist group"! heh. When parsing through these stories, close scrutiny is required. Looking under the covers reveals just who and what is really driving it; and iIn this case, the Washington Post comes close to admitting it.

POPSRebel General Vang Pao Rides Again!* (*almost) Agh! And just when I thought I'd seen the last of my old nemesis, General Vang Pao, leader of the Hmong rebel army in central Laos, he strikes agian! Or... almost. Don't you hate it when, on the eve of your coup d'etat, your mercenary army gets arrested by the ATF? Somehow it seems like this would make an interesting movie, or an even better Frederick Forsyth novel!

POPSUne Grande Dame!

POPSThe South and the GOP, again...... I'm not the only one who is concerned. My earlier clip about Nascar, the South and the GOP fits nicely, sadly, into this train of thought. I agree that the South can have at it, alone. Would be kinda weird to have to carry a passport to head "south of the border" - don't think Pepe will be pleased.

POPSAnother Saddam? A coup may be brewing in Iraq The Asia Times Online on the possiblity that a tacitly US-backed coup d'etat may be the next step in a devastated Iraq, and that control of the country may be returned to a Saddam-like Sunni strongman -- though this is unlikely to provide much stability either.
