POPSJoe the Plumber: The Internet Buzz I'm sure the National Enquirer is already hot on Wurzelbacher's trail, so expect to hear more on Joe the Plumber soon. In the meantime, I'd like to get Joe's number - my bathroom faucet is leaking. Before the debate Joe was interviewed John Gibson (right-wing talk radio). Lo and behold McCain brings this guy up during the debate. Coincidence or right-wing propaganda? And why is it that middle-class America is always represented in politics by a white guy? And why does Barack Obama have to pander to the "Joe Plumbers of America?" Because the Republicans use race to divide opinion. That's been in their play book ever since Nixon. I know plenty of hard-working middle-class black and latino guys. Change can't come soon enough for me.

POPSViva McCain Katie Couric asked each candidate recently what his favorite movie was. Obama gave an utterly conventional answer: "Oh, I think it would have to be The Godfather. One and two. Three not so much. Umm. So-so, but, but that--that saga--I love that movie." Lawrence of Arabia. Great film. One of my favorites--and then Casablanca. Who doesn't like Casablanca? Couric: I asked for one. Obama: I'm a movie guy. I can rattle off a bunch of movies. But that Casablanca, you know. That's Obama. He's glib, conventional, won't make a real choice, shows nothing about himself, and says nothing offputting and says nothing impressive.

POPSDiagramming Sarah "There are plenty of people out there—not only English teachers but also amateur language buffs like me—who believe that diagramming a sentence provides insight into the mind of its perpetrator"

POPSScene From a Palin Rally Consider this snapshot from Dana Milbank a companion piece to my morning post . McCain-Palin has abandoned integrity and honor altogether, feeding the worst impulses of their most stupid and hateful supporters. Never again will you read a word in this space giving John McCain the benefit of a doubt or arguing that he should be dealt with respectfully. If respect must be earned, then so can it be lost. John McCain has lost any remaining respect I had for him and, I hope, that of any thinking American. He's allowed himself to be transformed by his ambition into pure scum. And his supporters? The less said about these assholes the better. WelKKKome to John McKKKain's AmeriKKKa...

POPSDick Cheney, Role Model "Ms. Couric asked Joseph Biden, Ms. Palin’s rival, the same question in a separate interview. He had it exactly right when he told her that Mr. Cheney’s theory of the “unitary executive” held that “Congress and the people have no power in a time of war.” And he had it right in the debate when he called Mr. Cheney “the most dangerous vice president we’ve had in American history.” "

POPSBiden v. Palin On CNN someone said that she would be a candidate in four or eight years. I have no doubt that’s true. She reminds me of a talented sixth round pick in the NFL. She needs some development but with some time on the practice squad she will be a contributor to the Republican Party. Gone is the impression left from the Couric interviews that she is just a dope. The verdict Biden wins. Palin holds her own and improves.

POPSBiden and Couric: Idiots Together It's amazing how often I see some sort of joke being made of Sarah Palin "seeing Russion from her home" yet only Ann has pointed out this idiocy from the other side... Amazing, and sad.
