POPSHoly Cows: The great carbon offset con The Carbon Offset high priests have made it really easy for us to salve our consciences. We don’t have to go to confession, say Hail Marys, or do any other that old-fashioned embarrassing stuff. All we have to do is pay an offset fee when we buy our airline tickets and they’ll toddle off and plant some trees on our behalf. These trees are supposed to offset the carbon you just dumped into the atmosphere by absorbing it. It’s that simple. Or is it?

POPSBrucellosis Found in Wyoming Cattle Was researching 'brucellosis' and ironically this article showed up as a recent update in my Google search. What I have read up to the point of noticing this article is that brucellosis is rare in humans in the U.S. primarily because there are vaccines that are administered to the animals. The most likely human candidates to acquire this bacterial infection aside from animals are lab workers, veterinarians and ranchers; and THEN the people they have come into 'personal' contact with via fluid transmissions. Furthermore, brucellosis can be acquired via inhalation which is why it is considered a bio-terrorism agent.

POPSPolitics Explained CAMBODIAN COMMUNISM: You have two cows. The government takes both of them and shoots you. DICTATORSHIP: You have two cows. The government takes both and drafts you. PURE DEMOCRACY: You have two cows. Your neighbors decide who gets the milk. REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY: You have two cows. Your neighbors pick someone to tell you who gets the milk. BUREAUCRACY: You have two cows. At first the government regulates what you can feed them and when you can milk them. Then it pays you not to milk them. Then it takes both, shoots one, milks the other and pours the milk down the drain. Then it requires you to fill out forms accounting for the missing cows. PURE ANARCHY: You have two cows. Either you sell the milk at a fair price or your neighbors try to take the cows and kill you. LIBERTARIAN/ANARCHO-CAPITALISM: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull. SURREALISM: You have two giraffes. The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.

POPSBringing Dangerous Animal Virus To U.S. Mainland?
Foot-and-mouth virus can be carried on a worker's breath or clothes, or vehicles leaving a lab, and is so contagious it has been confined to Plum Island, N.Y., for more than a half-century — far from commercial livestock. The existing lab is 100 miles northeast of New York City in the Long Island Sound, accessible only by ferry or helicopter. Researchers there who work with the live virus are not permitted to own animals at home that would be susceptible, and they must wait at least a week before attending outside events where such animals might perform, such as a circus. An epidemic in 2001 devastated Britain's livestock industry, as the government slaughtered 6 million sheep, cows and pigs. Last year, in a less serious outbreak, Britain's health and safety agency concluded the virus probably escaped from a site shared by a government research center and a vaccine maker. Other outbreaks have occurred in Taiwan in 1997 and China last year and in 2006.
